Im sure the chilli recipe in the Phoenix has changed.  The old chilli burgers aint what they used to be  (still decent though).

This is unfortunately true. Although the ganga fries are still excellent.

Nice night out - The Newport

Middle - Sol Y Sambra

Pubs - Phoenix, Mayfly, Beer Kitchen

With the missus - Kingsway Farm

6orry!

The pup part of the Nether Abbey Hotel in North Berwick is worth a visit. Called the Fly Half. Has one of those huge wallpaper map things of the East Lothian coast on one wall, outside space.

I actually prefer The Bank Bar over the road if it's "grub and pub". Think the food is consistently great in there and its a well run wee place.

The Anchor is a great shout in the ferry but you're spoiled for choice down there. Fort also good and the Tapas place (Soli Sombre?) has been good since the Ferry Inn days.

Phoenix is still king on the West End but I find it can be a bit busy.

Will lump in for Inverness:

Saffron in Cradlehall near Culloden is absolutely the best curry in the city and the country, hands down. Bring Your Own Booze if you want to sit in too. Cinnamon is second, sadly the Rajah's best days are long behind them.

The Dores Inn right on the banks of Loch Ness is still an amazing setting, however since the original owners sold up for - an alleged but entirely believable - £1m a few years ago the reputation has gone downhill. Not just for the food, some stories of very unsavoury attitudes towards customers have been reported and indeed a good few confirmed.

If you fancy Italian, Little Italy on Stephen's Brae in the city centre is pretty much your only option but a very good one. Cosy, homely, great for lunch and years ago the owner/chef used to come out and sing 'happy birthday' - when the occasion merited it of course, not just randomly. Haven't seen him for ages but would still recommend.

Speaking of venues which never disappoint, Cafè One beside the castle has been a cracking scran for over two decades, you really can't go wrong there.

Have only been to the Mustard Seed once for an afternoon work do this year, overlooks the River Ness and specialises in seafood apparently - didn't try any but had an excellent meal all the same.

Lastly but not leastly, if you want good value, tasty pub grub in a family-friendly environment then my local at the Fluke is the place to go. On the way into town just past the hospital, often has 2-for-1 and kids eat free deals on, a few screens for the football too but not rowdy.

Unfortunately, most of the stuff in the actual city centre is either pretty average or the usual pub chain pish. Been away for a couple of months so happy to be corrected.

I havent eaten in there for over 30 years. Maybe it just feels like not going out to go for tea so close to home.

Ill give it a bash. I havent been to the post house, the chocolatier or the model car shop either. Im providing f**k all to the local economy

The Fluke in Inverness is great for everything IMO:  taking your other half for a meal, having 16 pints with the #boeyz or laughing like fuck at everyone when there's an Old Firm on.

The eggs Benedict in the post house are pretty good and the model shop is the best place in the Dundee area for a die cast Stuka.

I had a chili dog in the Pheonix today. It's not as good as it used to be but still above average.

Best burgers in Dundee are from The Shack up in the Hilltoon/Dens Road area.

Other recommendations for Dundee would be The Tailend, The Bach, Agacan and Mas.

Sam's Chop House in Manchester is my favourite restaurant in the UK.

The Fluke was one of my favourite haunts in the mid 80s along with the Hayloft, Dillingers and then Mr Gs. Things have changed a lot since then I imagine but good to hear The Fluke hasn’t changed much.

Sadly only The Fluke remains from the 4 you mentions.  G's is still there but it closed in 2016.

Forgot the Bach. Absolute class. Spicy mince on toast is the breakfast of champions.
