Going so far as to claim 'I'm just a poor widdle scientist, I don't know why anyone would think I have that sort of influence'. That Devi? Aye, after that cringeworthy, teflonesque performance - actually almost Tory in it's delivery - any of her future opinions should be punted into the nearest bin. What a brass neck she has. Aye, the very same who acted the victim when someone pointed out that the very policy she is advocating (and quite happy to receive professional accolades for as well) as serious repercussions on people's jobs and livelihoods. I bet she ends up on I'm a Celebrity this year...

It’s really quite something how this pandemic has caused people who previously I’d have thought of as left leaning to jump into bed with right wing scum like BoJo, that failed actor and JHB It has also been quite something to see the centre left, where I always considered myself to reside, be utterly fucking bereft of pragmatism and realism, and frankly engaging in far too much nauseating sanctimony. 31 minutes ago, madwullie said: I know it has, (that's why I put what I did in the parenthesis) iirc it was arrived at due to studies of blood donors - nonetheless, it is generally accepted they had an extremely large percentage of people infected, to the extent that they would have not been as bodied by the follow up wave without the new variant having some resistance to immunity gained from previous infection. As far as I'm aware, subsequent studies have found the E444k mutation is not quite as susceptible to vaccines 1.0, and also it has been confirmed that the initial virus also doesn't confer complete immunity to variants with this particular mutation. In fact, is it not the case that it's this specific mutation that the tweaks that are currently being rolled out and expected to go live in autumn are designed to combat. *citation needed* The Spanish flu pandemic had minimal mitigation in most parts of the world, but still had two or three large waves of infection and death.

But still. ...but that means diddlysquat in terms of how you could possibly model a similar trend for hospitalisations in Scotland in March when you know there is going to be vaccination of all the high risk groups and a stricter lockdown than what the Czechs have been doing. It's been no secret for months now that nobody who received the AZ vaccine in trials wound up with symptoms severe enough to go to hospital. All the variants do so far is limit efficacy against mild infection.

Detournement
The Czech Republic didn't have a first wave in early 2020 so they took the full brunt of winter with no natural immunity and more infectious strains.
super_carson
It's interesting, from a quick browse on social media, that reactions to this Brazilian variant are very cynical and would suggest a population that is fed-up with these restrictions. They range from people thinking it's a conspiracy theory to others who just don't care anymore. Whatever the reason, there doesn't seem to be the same level of panic that there was when the word variants was being banded about in the MSM. Not sure if or how that might impact on future government policy but it looks to me, on purely anecdotal observations on social media, that support for these restrictions are on the wane. There is a "new variant" being banded about in the media every 5 minutes, yet cases, deaths and hospitalizations continue to fall as vaccines are rolled out. People are no longer frightened by the constant mewing over these variants. Edited February 28, 2021 by EH75
