I thought we were not to “label” the variants as it could be offensive and racist? Hence Nicola quickly jumped on the bandwagon and rebranded the Indian version as “April 02” which, for whatever reason is now “Delta”. To avoid upsetting some unknown Nepalese restaurant owner who happened to pick up the Daily Mail this morning , I presume today’s latest twist on Variants might be re-badged as “Echo”?

However won’t that upset the feelings of people suffering from tinnitus? Maybe we ought to follow Nicola’s lead and call this version “June 03” for consistency and that’ll give her 365 options for upcoming unnamed and unseen variants!

maybe you should slam your latte on the ground.

So rather than simply reporting on every non-entity of a variant which appears, the media are now at the point of just making things up completely?

This is becoming beyond parody.
We are now at the third of June. For 2 or 3 weeks now of Variant scaremongering, the village idiot in London has pretty much held the line of "nothing in the data to prevent easing".

As we get closer and closer, and he still holds that line, the terrified are getting ever more desperate. I mean, fucking hell look at that utter catastrophe from Humza Yousaf. Should absolutely be sackable.

That's been briefed by Government to the press, most of them have gone with it this morning. The articles are identikit and full of vague language.

Begs the question why. Smacks of arse covering, though.

Have they binned mask wearing indoors?

Indoors ? Masks are required in virtually all outdoor settings never mind indoors

"The only remaining restriction is the indoor mask mandate, which is expected to remain in place for at least the next week."

Could you even imagine our government giving us such a short timescale for binning things ?

Yousaf has had some horrendous takes over the last month.

You are hopeless as a Cabinet Minister therefore you shall become Health Secretary.  Enter Shona Robison,  Jeane Freeman,  Humza Yosuaf - how long before Michael Matheson gets the role?

That is not current Portugal mask rules. See below from FCO website

You must wear a mask while walking along promenades and in restaurants and cafés until you are seated. At the beach, follow the one-way entry and exit signs and use a mask until you reach your spot on the sand. Use a mask and footwear while using sanitary facilities. Place your sunshade and towel 3m from the next group and keep a social distance of 1.5m when walking along the sand. Before you set off, check the occupancy levels of the beaches near you and avoid the ones that are marked “red” and “amber”.
You can be fined up to €100 if you breach the regulations.

Has that altered this week ? Seems odd UK would be considering putting them back on the Amber list if things were good enough to ease restrictions ?

Absolutely fuming with Yousaf’s comments yesterday. Increasingly becoming annoyed with the absolute thoughtlessness of some of the SNP MSP’s. I work with so many children crippled by anxiety thanks to COVID - talking about children being hospitalised for going to soft play isn’t exactly going to help. Utter fucking p***k.

I really do not understand this. By the end of September every adult who wants to be vaccinated will be, and all domestic restrictions should be long since fired into the sun. That is the time to stop furlough. What gallery are they playing to here? It's frustrating as well that Gove is saying they're "open minded". There is going to be economic hardship because of this, there has to be acceptance that this is the case rather than just trying to deal with the hardship in another 6 months...no another 6 months....

While Freeman was hardly competent, she didn't seem to be the type that made anywhere near the noise that Yousaf does.

That's handy when we are talking about not just basing things on cases, but problematic if its panic inducing comments about children being hospitalised that get jumped on by the media.

They've got more than Covid to be worrying about, especially if Netanyahu doesn't take the coalition power grab too well............

Whilst I agree regarding the removal of restrictions, there is an argument that furlough should continue beyond the end of restrictions to allow businesses to gauge demand and allow public confidence in safety etc to increase.

I think we all hope that, as soon as restrictions are removed, everyone is going to be out partying, spending and doing all of the things they previously took for granted.  Unfortunately, it would appear that there is a section of society (the size of which is debatable) that are now frozen in fear due to the horrendous messaging from government and media.  It may take some time for them to get over it and, while I don't believe furlough should be available for them to sit in the house, it could be used to support the businesses dependent on their spending.

Hopefully it wont come to that.

As you say, the Economy is pretty buoyant just now however furlough and the various grant schemes are giving a false picture of the actual situation, it will probably take another 18 months for the harsh reality to fully set in which will be high unemployment, retail decimation and hospitality failures throughout the country. I also believe the crash of the commercial property sector is being massively downplayed and with inflation starting to rise it makes for a perfect storm, especially when coupled with supply problems and additional tariffs caused by brexit.
