Believe what you like - 100% of them are dead, which may well not have been the case had those responsible for policy acted differently.

Still, Captain Tom, eh? emoji111.png

Had they "acted differently" we may have had fewer deaths but would have been locked down for longer which is worse for society as a whole.

Rightly or wrongly the USA is opening up over the next couple of months, quite a lot of the florida holidays for the second half of the year will probably go ahead. We were booked for next friday to go to Florida and waiting for our refund. We’re also booked for September, but have only paid the deposit so far, dont know if we should just take a hit and not bother paying the balance if virgin go bust.
If America is still riddled though, would you go?

Agreed to a point, but without lockdown for all, all the numbers would be up.

We chose one particular kind of lockdown. A different form may have seen 200% more deaths in under 45s (by keeping more things open) and 10% fewer in over 65s (e.g. banning them from going out, period). That would have meant fewer deaths.

Next couple of months are crucial. Think some European destinations will open up to non british tourists this summer, which if it doesnt help hammer home just how badly we’ve handled this then nothing will.

Not sure when this is with effect from however. The US is also mulling extending the travel ban currently.

44 deaths in Scotland.

The lowest total for the first day following a weekend or holiday Monday since March 31st, and the first time the figure announced on a Tuesday has been equal to or lower than the figure announced on a Saturday since the outbreak began

That's a complicated read. I think it means "Good news".

We chose a lenient version and still have the highest death rate in Europe. There's plenty of bits and what ifs that would have produced different results. In Donathon's scenario with over 70s dubbed up, they all live while the virus tips through the younger population, as you describe. Resulting in fewer deaths overall, but a much higher proportion of younger people.

I certainly know a couple of workmates who are spending the money refunded from cancelled holidays on their gardens instead.
My tickets for this summer's gigs have become fencing, plants and even a couple of gnomes.

I'd have preferred seeing George Thorogood, tbh.[emoji444]

Bullshit. The younger people wouldn't be dying. The virus is little more than a bad cold to healthy under 50's.

We’re waiting to see what sort of measures are put in place before the balance is due in late June, it doesnt look great over there. We both think we’ve had corona but regardless dont want to risk it if its still absolutely mental. Lots of talk of seasonal infections etc so have to assess it nearer the time. We stay in a villa mostly so can reduce risks if need be.

Starting to buy into the early predictions that foreign holidays are fucked for a very very long time.

Airlines have already begun to open up within Europe and countries like Spain, Portugal and Greece will do all they can to find a way of making it happen.

Yeh we usually travel from Glasgow or Manchester. Glasgow seems to be pretty profitable for their gla-mco route 3x a week, so would be surprised if they cut this one. Manchester they seem to use as a ‘Northern’ hub with routes to Vegas, Orlando, NYC, Boston and Los Angeles, so with that im pretty confident we’ll be ok for our holidays from Manchester still.

Except most other countries who acted differently and had fewer deaths are starting to open up now with a better chance of controlling the thing than we have

We have the highest number of deaths. Pretty sure Belgium has the highest death rate.

If you can fly between Edinburgh and London, you can fly between Edinburgh and Paris. There may have to be an extra layer of screening on departure, and flying to the states will be more hassle than it’s worth, but it’s definitely not the end of foreign travel. The tourism sector would be destroyed.

We could have just not bothered with a lockdown at all

We did choose a fairly lenient version, though it was typical of north Western Europe. But we've completely ignored the data telling us over 65s are something like 50 to 100 times more likely to die from this than people in their 20s and 30s. We're currently spending billions to have many of those young people sit at home while many people in their 60s are still working, so we're still using amazingly primitive policy (following 'the science').
