Coronavirus (COVID-19)

There will always be new variants, thankfully they will typically be less serious despite being more transmissable as that is the course of most respiratory viruses, and we should assume as much until there is significant evidence to the contrary. You simply cannot threaten to shut down society any time a new one comes along, not least one like this which is showing no signs of causing an increase in serious illness or deaths. We are told the vaccines are effective, and everyone who wants one has had at least 2 of them, therefore there is no basis for any new measures.

They keep using the phrase 'caution' as if this is a virtue. It is not 'caution' for the restaurant owner and bar staff who lose their business or their job unnecessarily. It is not caution for the children missing school if they shut. It may be 'caution' for the middle class, secure jobs, work from home types who make these decisions, but for huge chunks of society the risks of 'caution' outweighs their risk from this virus. It is also a question of time scale, you can get away with the 'cautious' excuse early on when knowledge is limited (both about the virus and about how damaging restrictions are), we are so far beyond that stage now. It is time to get on with life, a return to any restrictions this winter is an acceptance that things will never be normal again as there is nothing abnormal about an endemic respiratory virus mutating. Our response this winter has to set the tone for how we deal with this every year in the future. People can make their own decisions about their own risk, I am fed up of being babied by these idiots in charge and I am fed up of the untold damage they are doing to society.

Well there you have it, Nicola Sturgeon is so out of touch Clydebank and Airdrie fans have united to condemn her pish.

Not sure if this means she is god, or the fucking Devil.

The furlough scheme was a good experiment in how massive government spending in an advanced economy doesn't lead to the end of days (mind the hot takes about Weimar hyperinflation in this thread? lmao).

Just been to Ingliston to get booster. 2 and a half hour wait 😂😂. Will give that a miss thanks.

You’ve been unlucky, I was there yesterday for my booster and flu jag, and although busy, I only waited 10 mins.

Anyway, works Xmas night out now cancelled. All very depressing.

How they can ask us to adhere to advice when that scumbag PM and his cronies don’t, is beyond preposterous.

Omicron tests in the UK show booster jags offer 75% protection against symptomatic Covid apparently.

Essentially if everyone in the older / vulnerable age brackets get a vaccine every 3 months we are fine.

If that’s how it has to be then so be it. Just get the GPs and practice nurses administering them like they do with other vaccinations.

That 1st line. 1m cases by the end of the month if things continue as they are. Let me see that's averaging 50k a day or in other words about 10k a day LESS than today. The way that's worded it's made to sound that we are going to get all these new Omicron infections ON TOP of the already 50k a day plus primary Delta infections when the reality is Omicron will REPLACE Delta.

As I think I’ve said before I try not to share too much stuff on Twitter that seems crazy to me as it’s just an empty dunk but the following two tweets jumped out at me a bit.

That’s nuanced for a Covid tweet but even if you don’t want to go out I don’t think it’s difficult to understand why people want to go out - everything has been open (ish) for a long time now. My work cancelled the official party but then a few people went to the pub after work anyway - everyone 2 or 3 times vaccinated, probably more than half have had Covid as well, all in an office together during the day. Risk assessing that, is it particularly surprising people wanted to socialise a bit?

I also saw this one

a variation of the “scumbags spreading covid” meme, with a bit of disgust at general people.

China or North Korea would be perfect for these oddballs. I genuinely have no idea why they aren't booking up immediately.

We might not be wheeling carts of coins to the shops for milk and bread, but have you seen what's happening with inflation?

You're typically way too early with the advanced smug twattery.

We haven't even begin to start talking about how to pay for any of this and the restrictions and gargantuan spending on covid aren't over yet.

Yes, it's a concern (although it's objectively not hyperinflation) but Reuters had a breakdown of what was driving UK inflation. Big increases in energy prices (obviously) and the second hand car market is going wild (because of supply issues that were discussed in the summer of 2020). It's not exactly controversial to say that it's supply side driven rather than the result of government spending.

It's being driven by shortages caused by the double whammy of Brexit and increasing demand around the world from countries coming out of lockdowns.

You could possibly add in a third factor - the blockage of the Suez Canal which restricted supplies.

75% against even showing a symptom.....

Just think about what that means for hospitalisation and deaths........
