Midlands League

Are there still any plans to split into 2 divisions eventually? Maybe if another 1 or 2 applications come in...
Some of the previous cannon fodder have turned into really decent teams. Has this been down to playing against the top sides every 2nd week? Or is there more to it than that?
We would need some more applicants for that. 19 is quite low for a split imo. I think if we get higher than 20 it might be split.

Was it even as far along as a formal proposal? If the Midlands League could persuade Jeanfield, Luncarty, Kinnoull and Montrose Roselea to move back to the old Tayside region format having two divisions would be easy enough. No idea if there's any appetite at any of those clubs for that.

Things are where they are not because it's the ideal league format but because it turned out to be the only available way out of an insane blazer politics logjam that finally got everybody into the pyramid.

The Midlands League are probably just going to have to make the best of it basically if the four clubs mentioned above are happy where they are. Unless something finally happens with Breadalbane...

Id say it would take a lot of persuasion for any of the 4 to move

Montrose Roselea and Jeanfield are already at tier 6 so if there was a 2 division set up would need to join before the league split or they are going backwards for at least 1 season

I think Jeanfield , Luncarty and Kinnoull are all also very settled in the EOS set up, Jeanfield have Lowland league ambitions and that will be more attractive to them than the Highland league (Until some Midland teams make it into the system). Luncarty have just made an EOS cup final and will be aiming at promotion this season

Is 20 teams enough for 2 divisions? That would mean 36 league games which i guess would work especially if the season was front loaded with league games in midweeks at the start of the season

Id say the standard of the bottom teams is getting better with more experience

2 divisions may be the answer in time

If the league could get to 22 somehow you could have a top 12 playing each other twice then splitting in two for a further 10 games and a standard league of 10 playing 36 games in the second tier , as teams at that level would not have as many cup ties , nor the need to be finished in time for a play off for promotion to the highland league

Already playing 36 (over 38 dates due to the odd number)

So it can be done.

Didn't Roselea move to the North region for travel distance reasons?

Yes, that happened after being promoted out of their district league and winding up in a second tier of the east region comprised mainly of clubs in the Lothians (including Dunbar AFAIR). The irony was that after moving to the North Region they initially were placed in a second division west comprised mainly of clubs in Nairnshire, Moray and Banffshire. They are an Angus club so it would arguably make more sense to be in with the Midlands League now from a travel standpoint.

With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps Montrose Roselea would have gone for the Midlands League, but as you say it wasn't on the cards at the time, but a Lothians heavy East Regional division was. To be honest, although travel would be less for them in the Midlands, aside from Nairn, Dufftown and Maud, the North Premiership is really just an Aberdeen and District league and the AWPR has significantly cut journey times. Fewer league fixtures in the North as well. I suspect travel isn't really their main concern.

Could St Andrews and Newburgh both currently in tier 8 be interested in switching to the ML effectively being promoted two divisions despite being in the edge of the LL Catchment area? They would only need to travel as far as Brechin rather than Hawick as present and travel times would be significently reduced.

There is an agreed boundary between the ML & EOS, both are in EOS territory. Only Perth is a bit of a grey area.

Chances are the best Midlands teams are going to end up in the Highland with no replacements for quite sometime.

A St Andrews or the Perth EOS sides could easily find themselves as contenders to the Highland League. Right now only Jeanfield have to worry about the prospect of Tier 5 football while everyone's dealing with the certainty worse case they have some trips to the Borders.

It's also one of the flaws in jumping to 10-10 even if they get to 20.

That's never been publicly announced unlike what happened between the EoS and WoS and isn't in any league constitutions AFAIA, so if it's not in writing somewhere let's not start pretending there are rigid boundaries on this like what happened with the Club 42 line of latitude and all the completely pointless maps of Luncarty with lines through them. Doubt anyone in the EoS would lose any sleep over Newburgh changing leagues if that's what they wanted to do. Glenrothes might start to ruffle feathers a bit and start to alarm the Highland League.
