The Football Analytics Thread - Sponsored by Dungeons and Dragons

Recommended Posts

For all the threads we have on Pie and Bovril, we don't actually have one dedicated to football analytics - we kind of scatter the discussion into various team threads.

I thought it would be worthwhile to have a dedicated thread for this - there are some really good up-and-coming Scottish (and non-Scottish) analysts out there, and it would be good to have a dedicated thread to share, promote and discuss their work. It is a bit of a niche, but then so is Scottish football. We also have some posters on here who dabble in this kind of thing - myself included - so it would allow us to post our own things in here too.

To kick us off, Jaymes Monte, a Dundee Utd fan who runs @ArabAnalytics on Twitter, wrote this interesting piece earlier: http://analyticsfc.co.uk/blog/2021/04/22/does-style-matter-a-study-from-the-scottish-premiership/

There have been some teams that have clearly had successful seasons in the Premiership this year - Rangers, Hibs, Livingston, St Johnstone, St Mirren have all done well - and some teams that clearly haven't been successful - Celtic, Aberdeen, Motherwell are three that come to mind.

What does the data tell us about the sides that have done well, and the sides that haven't? Is it better to be really good at one style of play, or are you better off trying to be all-rounders?

My thoughts: It's easy to infer from the data that teams dominant in one style of play are having better seasons than teams that aren't. This probably reflects more on the quality of the coaching team? If you have a good coaching team, they'll implement a cohesive style of play, it'll work, you'll stick with it so you'll start to stack up numbers? Conversely, if you're struggling you're more likely to try and switch and change things up, therefore you'll struggle to develop a coherent playing style?

Surely you and Randomguy could just send each other private messages?

Popped on to say precisely this. I have a sneaking feeling there are a few stat geeks among the secret fraternity of lurkers who will tentatively reveal themselves like the munchkins at the start of the Wizard of Oz when Glinda sings "come out, come out, wherever you are" .

In what way have St Mirren done well?

If bottom half premiership and a cup semi pumping is doing well then the game is fucked.

They almost made the top 6, Tam, they'll release a DVD about this season.

Running a St Johnstone side, who have just appointed a rookie manager and have Chris fucking Kane as their main (non scoring) striker, close is some fucking achievement right enough.

Might as well throw in Partick Thistle doing well too, they're really excelling.

Currently 2 points ahead of 6th placed St Johnstone.
