She’s basically the David Beckham of tennis Whether ending up married to Enrique Iglesias is a better result than marrying posh spice is another question Let's be honest her doubles partnership with Hingus didn't do her any harm either! Clockwork
Already mentioned, but Audley Harrison has to be right up there. He never going to match the hype or the money thrown at him by the BBC. Seemed so nervous of getting tagged, he was almost rigid, unable/unwilling to throw his shots and paid for it. For his size/physique, proved to be hopeless as soon as he moved up to a level, he should have been comfortable at.
TheScarf
Hewitt was fucking world number 1 two years before this. Look how weak he looks against 2004 Federer. Made to look like a wee boy. Backs up my point about how weak 2001-2003 was in tennis.
SlipperyP
Michelle Wie, was going to take woman golf to a new level. Was playing in men's tournament that she was that great. Won 5 titles (1 was a major) ranked now at 649 in the world and only played 2 tournament this year (because she was a past winner). She is only 32.

The hype was built on his Olympic success but those were wobbly foundations at best Anthony Joshua won the Olympic gold in London at the age of 22. Lennox Lewis won at 23, Tyrell Biggs was 24. Klitchko won the gold at the age of 20 in Atlanta in 1996 Harrison was already 25 for the '96 games and didn't even qualify to go to Atlanta. He was 29 in Sydney an age when professionals should be approaching their peak as opposed to beginning their apprenticeship
scottsdad
I woke up this morning feeling like I went 12 rounds with Audley Harrison last night. Absolutely fine.

It's no quite Paul Collingwood scoring 17 runs in an Ashes series and landing an MBE as a result, because he achieved one hell of a lot more across his career than that, but it's up there.

Bianca Andreescu falling into this category too Canadian sports channels fawn over her, but she advanced to the US Open Final without meeting a top-10 player and got a lucky win against an ailing Serena Is it genuinely down to injuries?
BFTD
I hadn't looked at the tournament that Raducanu won, but that's some amount of luck in the draw. Only played two seeds, the highest of which was #11. Not even England have had a tournament draw open up like that. But hey, she still had to beat the better players put in front of her. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_US_Open_–_Women's_singles
scottsdad
If anyone has mentioned David Haye here, you need to remove him from your lists now. He may have been shite at boxing but his recent work is exceptional.

His later years as a heavyweight were disappointing but he was an excellent cruiserweight.
sparky88
Richard Gasquet. John Fleck. Freddie Adu. Any top male snooker player that isn't O Sullivan, Williams, Hendry, Higgins and maybe Selby. I'm thinking Murphy, Trump, Robertson in particular.

She was the first player in history to win a slam as a qualifier, and she did it without dropping a set. That's not under delivering and the hype only came after she won the slam. There have been several female players who won their first slam (Serena being an example) then took another couple of years to win another. Emma will still go on to have a decent career.

She was also out of the game for a while because she needed surgery on both wrists and one ankle Basically much of last year and most of this year is a write off Edited March 6 by topcat(The most tip top)
topcat(The most tip top)
Paul McStay was hyped as being off to Juventus or inter in 1992 * Humiliatingly he ended up staying at Celtic * Note for younger readers Serie A was pretty much the top league in Europe at the time
