Iran and Qatar presumably heavy favourites in Group A, maybe between UAE and North Korea for the repecharge round?

Group B will see someone from outwith the usual suspects qualify (could Palestine upset the odds?).

Group C being a mini Group of Death with Japan, Australia and Saudi Arabia all perennial qualified and China doing so not so long ago. Could see results all over the place here.

Since moving from OFC to AFC Australia and Japan have met at some stage in every WC qualifying campaign. So far it’s 2 wins each and 4 draws. They also met in the group stage in Germany 2006 with Australia winning 2-1. I was at the last 2010 qualifying game at the MCG in 2009 where Australia won 2-1 but we’d both already qualified.

Ticket bought for Australia v China qualifier at Adelaide Oval on 10 October. Will be interesting to see how the attendance compares with the 52,912 that turned up in May for t( Matildas v China friendly. Shit stadium to watch football at other than the aerial ping pond variety.

Oceania qualifying draw made yesterday,

FIFA World Cup OFC qualifying draw

Group A

  • Solomon Islands
  • Fiji
  • New Caledonia
  • Papua New Guinea

Group B

  • New Zealand
  • Tahiti
  • Vanuatu
  • Winner round 1

Round 1 fixtures

# indicates OFC order of rankings

Cook Islands (#8) v Tonga (#11)

American Samoa (#9) v Samoa (#10)

Winners of those games will meet to decide who goes through to Group B.

Qualifying series format

Each country will play every opponent in the group once in matches staged in October and November, with the top two teams from each group progressing to semi-final ties in March 2025.

The Group A winners will play the Group B runners-up and Group B winners will play the Group A runners-up. The winners of those matches will then go head-to-head for the first-ever guaranteed ticket to a FIFA World Cup for an OFC nation.

The runner-up in that contest will progress to the FIFA intercontinental play-off tournament and a chance to give Oceania an historic second FIFA World Cup representative in Canada, Mexico and the United States in 2026.

The host venues for match day three, four, five, six and seven are yet to be determined

Also Bahrain’s first win against Australia after 6 losses. Duke should never have been brought up but typical Arnold.

First ever win for them against the Aussies, apparently. Great result for Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Worth remembering that Australia will have to do something spectacular to avoid qualifying this time. If they finish behind Japan and Saudi Arabia, they'll get another bite at the cherry against, say, Uzbekistan and Iraq. If they can only finish second against those two, they'll have a play-off against someone like Oman - if they avoid losing that, they'll need to win a game against a nation like Gabon or Paraguay.

Wouldn't be too much of a surprise if some of the traditional qualifiers from Africa, Asia, or the Americas are pretty mediocre this time out, purely from ennui.

Japan 7-0 China

It's pretty incredible that despite having 1/3rd of the global population between them that neither China or India are capable of mustering a half decent international side.

On the upside, their contribution to the world cup of tasty scran’ can only be matched by the Italian team.

Drew 1-1 at home to Indonesia. Japan have probably already won the Group!

Yep. South Korea also failing to beat Palestine at home, and Qatar beaten at home by the UAE (who've been in a good run of form TBF). None have any real doubt that they'll qualify anyway

Elsewhere, Venezuela doing their best to quash any hope that we might finally see the only South American nation yet to make their debut, and Tonga are halfway to being ridden by New Zealand if they can get past the winner of the big Samoa derby, which is free to watch on FIFA's website in half an hour, if anyone else is awake: https://www.plus.fifa.com/en/content/american-samoa-v-samoa-semi-finals-first-round-ofc-qualifiers-fifa-world-cup-26tm-2024/ca2b0e94-5da9-4027-91d8-c23a73e9243d

HT 0-0 in the Samoa derby being played in Apia, Samoa where it’s almost 4pm.

Spent half an hour getting "please disable your (non-existent) ad blocker" messages from FIFA before giving up.

Fizzing that I'm missing such a cracker.

American Samoa 0 Samoa 2.  An improvement for American Samoa as last time they met Samoa won 11-0 in the Pacific Games last November.  Samoa now meet Tonga in First Round Final on Monday 03:00 BST.

Download the FIFA+ app.

Will remember that for the future. I hadn't realised that some of these games were available to stream on FIFA's website.

Always quite liked the idea that some of the island nations get together for a wee qualifying tournament over a few days. Imagine if we did that in Europe and one of the big nations had an outbreak of skitters at the start of the weekend.
