Pretty clear that Mexico have only been given 2 stadiums worth of games but they've been split across 3 venues (each Mexican ground has only 4 or 5 games while every other stadium get 6 or 7... indeed New York, Los Angeles and Atalanta get 8 while whoever negotiated for Dallas has managed to bag 9 which is more than Guadaljara + Monterrey combined).

Startling how little they or Canada are involved though... each receive only 2x Last 32 and 1x Last 16 ties, no ties at all thereafter, with a sop of the Mexicans getting the opening match. Very much USA with some bolt-ons.

This seems to be the way it’s going now. A main country with some sidekicks. It’s pish.

It's shit. Canada is the best of the three from a climate point of view while Mexico is the best for potentially mad fans. USA is very meh.

Mexico and Canada should really have demanded at least 25% of the tournament each or told the US they wouldn't vote for their bid. Shitebags.

I think you underestimate our crippling inferiority complex and desperation to be seen as being important, we would have accepted one stadium

  • 1 month later...

Just noticed that the Asian/Oceanic qualifiers are back on from next week. Some tremendous efficiency from Japan here; I assume the Beeb have lazily missed out the seconds on the kick-off time.

Thailand with a remarkable 1-1 away to South Korea. Keeping the hopes alive. With China drawing with Singapore 2-2 (who are dogshite). It opens up that second place.

The game itself was a one way affair, as expected. However, with compact defence and some heroic goalkeeping Thailand kept in the game. Always looked dangerous on the break with pace on both flanks. They got one real good chance and scored.

On to Tuesday, where they are hosts with the return of South Korea...

Since the new manager took over (after the defeat from China on the first game) he has them playing ok football.

Australia 2 Lebanon 0. Australia’s goals score by a St Mirren, Baccus, cracking cross goal and a Hearts player, Rowles, with a mishit well placed in off the post. First Australian goals for both players.

Was pretty bored shitless watching this. Australia desperately need someone in midfield to control things and create chances.

North Korea v Japan called off due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/22/north-korea-cancels-world-cup-qualifier-against-japan

According to reports it due to a strain of streptococcal currently spreading in Japan.

Quote

The Kyodo news agency cited unspecified North Korean media reports about a “malignant infectious disease” in Japan, thought to be a reference to a potentially deadly form of group A streptococcal disease, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS).

Experts in Japan have said cases of STSS will continue to spread, while officials are struggling to identify the cause. The number of cases in 2024 is expected to exceed last year’s record number after the presence of highly virulent and infectious strains were confirmed in Japan.

British Virgin Islands (good guys) beat US Virgin Islands (wanks) on penalties.

I suppose it's appropriate that neither of the Virgins scored and both had clean sheets.
