It’s actually a reasonable way to try to ease the injury worries that caused so many to skip the Pro-Bowl…if you HAVE to play a game. Honestly, an off-season skills contest a couple of weeks after the Super Bowl makes more sense.

Aye, I can understand that part of it. I just think most players want to feck off on holiday when their season is done.

They totally killed the ProBowl when they moved it to the weekend before the SB. It was never a game that was played at full tilt anyway, but there used to be a degree of prestige and pride involved in playing a showcase in Honolulu so the players respected that and took it somewhat seriously. As soon as it was moved it was clear that even the League didn't really take it seriously any more, and since then it's just become more and more of a mickey mouse event with each year. Personally I'd just name the All-Star teams for each Conference and forget about having an actual game or event altogether.

They shouldn't have a public vote imo, let the players and coaches vote instead.

Like so many other aspects of the NFL the Probowl was diminished by the advent of Free Agency. It used to have much more prestige because it was about the only time some truly great players who played on perpetually garbage teams ever got to be in the spotlight for a bit. Guys like Jessie Tuggle, Clay Matthews Jr, Aaneas Williams, some of the very best to ever play their positions, but spent all or most of their careers with teams that barely ever played in prime time games or made the playoffs. The other players around the league respected the fact that for these guys being named to the ProBowl was an honour and a highlight, so nobody despoiled that by refusing to turn up or treating it like a joke. Nowadays it's just a measure of PR and media profile as much as anything. There are guys going to their 5th or 6th straight Probowl despite playing like absolute crap for years on end and really being nowhere near the best at their position.
