I think the biggest reason is wanting to get on early so they can get space in the overhead locker next to them. rather than their bag having to go in a locker 20 odd seats away.

Exactly right.

I don't think I've ever had to put my cabin baggage any further away than the row in front of or behind me.

In any case, the only people this should be of any concern to are those who need to repeatedly go into their bag during the flight, and these people should be banned from flying altogether.

Depending on what you have in your bag, you may not want it to be out of sight.  Sure, the chances of someone pinching anything is slim but it can and does happen -

"Theft from carry-on baggage

As airlines increase their fees for checked baggage, passengers have started using larger bags as carry-ons and packing more valuables in them. This has led to reports of theft from carry-on baggage stored in the overhead compartments and under the seats of aircraft during flights and the theft of the carry-on bags themselves during and after flights. Often the traveller does not realize that something is missing until much later".

For me, If I've nothing to do I'm just as happy sitting on the plane as at the gate.  I wouldn't stand in a long queue though, but If the queue is short I'm just as happy boarding as waiting.

Sister in law told me that the last time she was on a flight to Paris, c***s* sitting well back in the cabin were just placing thier carry on luggage in the overhead cabinets nearest the doors so that they didn't have to manoeuvre them up and down the plane.

* she called them "passengers".  The way they acted, I prefer my version.
