It was predicted to be quite close, despite polls showing a trend toward the final result in the last few days. With a bit over a 39% turnout, pretty good for a non-major election date, there were some really interesting numbers. Around a couple of universities, the turnout topped 98%…and was tremendously against the proposition. This is a massive, flashing red light for the Republican Party going forward. For the longest time it’s used the narrative that as people age they become more conservative. instead, studies are showing that the people remain about the same while the parties move their positions. So the Republican Party has moved so far to the Right that without a sudden turn back Left, they will potentially find themselves in the wilderness as soon as 2028. They have positioned themselves well outside of the mainstream of those voters and future voters born after 1995, and are struggling to keep those born after 1965 now with their latest assaults on rights. Millennials and Gen Z made up 31% of the 2020 electorate versus 23% in 2016….baby boomers were only 44% in 2020, and falling rapidly. By 2024, those young voters will be 48.5% of potential voters (not the actual electorate, potential voters…that’s why the number jumps so quickly…and likely over 40% of the electorate) while by 2028, it’s over 54% of potential voters.
