Hopefully a most fortuitous cup win will mean the new 25% stakeholder changes his mind and it’s another year for Erik. GordonS
Man Utd prevented Newcastle from getting into Europe firstly by beating them 3-2 a couple of weeks ago, which cost them 6th place, and then getting an incredibly unlikely win the cup final. If I were ten Hag I'd be staying away from Saudi embassies.

Considering the money they have spent, Arteta is not exactly successful at actually winning things.
craigkillie
A league is always going to be a more realistic measure of the quality of a team compared to the luck of the draw in a cup competition. Criticising Arteta for falling a couple of points short of beating a financially doped petrostate club to a league title seems a bit unfair, look at Arsenal's league performances in the years before he went there - they had finished 8th in two consecutive seasons before he took over, and had been out of the Champions League for 5 straight years.

Thinking a cup win - in which you only beat two teams above 17th place and needed penalties to beat Coventry - is a better measure of quality than getting 89 points against all the teams in your league is... a choice. Man Utd were closer to Nottingham Forest than to Arsenal. Players and fans want trophies and that's how it should be, but Man Utd fans aren't going around today thinking their players and manager are better than Arsenal's.

At some point though, when you are spending what they are, you have to start winning things. Arsenal sacked Wenger after years of just falling short in the same way and Arteta has been there since 2019, it’s not like he’s not had a fair amount of time and backing. Wenger (or the clubs/fans/media collectively) basically started the "top 4 is a success" narrative that exists in England. Fuzzy on the detail but my recollection of that time was that Wenger was hamstrung money-wise by the move from Highbury and pretty much settled on Champions League qualification as his objective, knowing full well he couldn't afford to challenge for the title. Arteta on the other hand, has spent a fortune and will no doubt do so again.

This is the same Wenger who won the FA Cup in 3 of his last 5 seasons. The winning things didn’t save him because they were miles off it in the league.

At least the FA Cups are something for the fans to cheer about and most teams go through time winning nothing at all. Few clubs can afford to turn their nose up at winning something, but Arsenal at that time could be one of them. To be fair Arteta got a FA Cup when he came in but that was really early and he dismantled that side. Obviously improving in the league but it still comes down to there not being much to cheer about in a second place.
