Jack of All Trades: the Alex Jack Cup 2023-24

Leith Athletic v Kinnoull last night... deserved win for Leith who, despite being down to 10 men, were far better... especially after the red card.

Leith started stronger, but Kinnoull slowly forced their way into the game and took the lead. By half time, they were marginally better side.

2nd half it all erupted a bit. Leith went for the jugular, equalised early... then had a men sent off... straight red... for maybe in the eyes of the ref a kick out at defender while chasing the ball... don't think anyone was too sure. Ironically, this was just a few minutes after a Kinnoull player quite forcefully pushed a Leith player to the ground in front of ref... and not even a card.

After going down a man, Leith were just excellent and repeatedly attacked down the sides with pace and got players up into the box to support. They left gaps, but Kinnoull didn't have enough about them to take advantage and Leith consistently out fought them in midfield to regain possession. Persistence paid off and a deserved last minute winning goal for the home team.

This was first division v premier... if you didn't know which was which, you'd easily have picked Leith as the premier side. Took them a wee while to get going, but they were excellent in the 2nd half and worth their place in the next round.

(Fri) Leith Athletic 2-1 Kinnoull

Bo'ness Athletic 4-1 Edinburgh College
Edinburgh Community 0-1 Arniston Rangers
Edinburgh South 2-3 Rosyth
Fauldhouse United 0-1 Crossgates Primrose     (aet)
Heriot-Watt University 7-1 Edinburgh United
Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 2-3 Peebles Rovers
Linton Hotspur 0-2 Ormiston Primrose
Livingston United 3-1 Lochgelly Albert
Lochore Welfare 1-2 Whitburn
Thornton Hibs 1-3 Glenrothes
Tweedmouth Rangers 4-7 Harthill Royal     (aet, FT 3-3)

Peebles undoubtedly claim the 'shock of the day' crown with their impressive win at Dalgety Bay... hailing from the Premier as they do, hosts Inverkeithing would eye this cup as an opportunity for silverware and a route into the Scottish Cup, but their Second Division opponents came away with the victory. Incredible scoreline at Shielfield - whilst Fauldhouse gave Crossgates a scare, and Leith eliminated Premier visitors Kinnoull last night.

Last 16... with Bo'ness Athletic v Crossgates looking "tie-of-the-round":

Friday 1st September
Leith Athletic v Arniston Rangers

Saturday 2nd September
Bo'ness Athletic v Crossgates Primrose
Harthill Royal v Oakley United
Heriot-Watt University v Kennoway Star Hearts
Kirkcaldy & Dysart v Ormiston Primrose

Newburgh v Glenrothes
Whitburn v Peebles Rovers

Kirkcaldy & Dysart 2-0 Ormiston Primrose

Newburgh 3-2 Glenrothes
Whitburn 3-2 Peebles Rovers     (aet, FT 2-2)

Bo'ness Athletic once more "do what they do" while Harthill's magnificent cup form continues.

Newburgh stun Glenrothes and Peebles almost overturned Whitburn.

Premier now all eliminated.

QF entrants; ties on Saturday 23rd September:

Arniston Rangers, Heriot-Watt University, Kirkcaldy & Dysart, Rosyth, Whitburn
Bo'ness Athletic, Newburgh
Harthill Royal

Winning a trophy is incentive enough but if extra motivation was needed Luncarty's example... having now marched past 2 ties into Scottish Cup R1... will be enough to electrify these teams.

Whitburn/Arniston Rangers v Bo'ness Athletic/Newburgh

Interesting draw with Bo'ness Athletic, Heriot-Watt Uni and Whitburn likely considered favourites for their QFs and a Fife derby hard to call.

Whitburn and Bo'ness Athletic could then meet in SFs.

(Fri) Bo'ness Athletic (seven) 7-2 Newburgh
Heriot-Watt University 5-0 Harthill Royal
Rosyth 2-1 Kirkcaldy & Dysart
Whitburn 0-2 Arniston Rangers

Arniston pull off what many will see as a shock at Central Park... Whitburn must have been eyeing-up this competition for route into Scottish Cup.

Luncarty winning their 3rd tie on the trot and marching into R2 certainly shows the rewards which can be reaped.

SFs:

Arniston Rangers v Bo'ness Athletic
Heriot-Watt University v Rosyth

Since going into the EoSFL,Whitburn have underperformed in most of the cup competitions,Centenary Cup aside.

The whole club is and has been these last 2 seasons, geared for eventually playing in the EoSFL Premier Division.

Though disappointed as this was a good cup as it gives you Scottish Cup entry if you win it,especially as Whitburn have yet to play in the Scottish Cup.

Ps, Floodlights are being planned for Central Park.

Looking forward to this one on Sunday. Not sure if Heriot-Watt will have much of a support, so hopefully plenty other neutrals and groundhoppers in attendance to make it a decent cup final worthy crowd.  Imagine Bo'ness will be big favourites, but here's hoping for a right good, tight, cup match.

^^^ getting dragged along by the wife for her second pie of the weekend!

There was a half decent crowd for this last year so we'll see. Might be a good game.

The weather is looking pretty decent, so hopefully that encourages a few along.

Bo'ness Athletic won the cup with an 89th minute goal giving them a 2-1 win.  One bonus of the late goal was that it avoided another 30 minutes extra time in a match that was pretty poor TBH.

Athletic probably edged the first half in terms of chances and led 1-0, although the University should have had a penalty in the first couple of minutes that the ref inexplicably waved away.

In the second half HWU had the better of the chances and deservedly levelled from the penalty spot, only to suffer the late goal.

The game was spoiled to a large extent by an officious referee showing multiple yellow cards to both sides for minor offences, then taking an unnecessary long time to record everything in his notebook (there wasn't a single foul I would have described as reckless or dangerous). There were also numerous stoppages for injuries that didn't need the attention of the physios.

Sunday 18th February 2024
Final:
Heriot-Watt University 1-2 Bo'ness Athletic

Bo'ness edged an evenly-balanced if relatively action-free showpiece on a bright yet blustery day in West Lothian. It was more 'war of nerves' than 'gung ho'. Decent crowd of about 300 given neither carries much of a support.

Students were more composed on the ball but Athletic were more dangerous in attack.

HW had an early penalty shout denied and will rue conceding to free headers at the back post late in each half. BA gave away a penalty on hour which levelled it.

Heriot-Watt leave with plenty credit as many neutrals seemed to expect them to go down by a few especially after falling behind.

Bo'ness Athletic - who won the Third Division and EOS League Cup last season - now meet Drumchapel United and either Lochar Thistle or Nithsdale Wanderers in the Cup-Winners' Shield this spring for a place in next season's Scottish Cup.
