Perthshire league down from 9 & 10 to 8 & 9. Grim.

19 clubs at the end of last season but had gone back up to 10 & 10 in the summer. Vale of Earn, Stanley and Abernethy all gone already.

Costs are a major factor. From a player point of view, folk aren’t really up for ‘paying their dues’ every week when other teams are offering sums to play instead (and I include amateur teams in that too).
Relying on council facilities, as a lot of teams do, while running with small squads to cover the costs, is never going to end well.

Seen this in the Bristol area where leagues were decimated & some folded, sign of the times I guess. Seems like the travelling is an issue, lack of players & costs too ?  Good luck to those clubs that remain.

Worked at Temple Meads Railway Station for 2 years early 2000s, who did you play for in Bristol?

That's a big hit. Been a main stay in that top division the last ten years.

That's a real shocker, I fear there are more to come as all you see is teams looking for opposition on twitter as clubs pulling out left right and centre.

Horfield Old Boys (suburban lge) on sat and the Anchor Hotel (Regional) on sun. Both folded by the 2000's sadly.

It’s why we’re down to 1 team this season.

Boys at 18/19 not having to pay fees to pay under 20s and getting to play on Friday nights. Became unaffordable to try run with two very small squads.

Newtown AFC have withdrawn from this seasons Borders Amateur League but hope to return next season.

These clubs are pretty big misses. Crieff is a pretty big place not to have a club of any kind. Stanley have always been decent over the years. The lads at Abernethy tried hard to get people involved but think the interest in amateur football is gone. Really sad to see the state of the amateur game in Perthshire and indeed the rest of Scotland now.

Don't have too much knowledge on the Perthshire scene, but if it is plummeting down a dangerous road, would a merger with the Midlands not be somewhat beneficial? Or even Stirling? I know that causes all sorts of problems geographically, especially with midweek games, but surely it is a consideration?

Midlands have just 12 teams left (plus a reserve division) and Stirling 8 so something will have to happen eventually.

SPAFA, Caley and GGP need to merge.

LEAFA need to merge with Fife or Borders.

Perth needs to merge with Stirling, Fife or Midlands.

Stirling needs to merge with the Glasgow leagues, Edinburgh league, Perth or Fife.

These conversations need to happen this season if we are still going to have afternoon amateur football in 2030.

Sadly far from slowing the decline has continued at a consistent rate... excluding the Saturday morning and Churches leagues a decade ago 627 teams started the season; half a decade ago it was 451; now it looks like being 278... but don't know if Midlands at 20 (inc. Alliance) and Fife at 30 are accurate.

That's a fall of 176; followed by a fall of 173; if you have another of 170 there will only be 108 left in 2029.

However in Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Borders and Fife declines are less pronounced... it's Tayside, Stirlingshire, Edinburgh and Glasgow (still with 3 competing leagues!) plunging headlong.

Single league in Glasgow, a merger on Tayside, plus Stirling going their separate ways would seem logical.

That would leave you with 7 leagues of 25 to 75 clubs each, without ramping-up travel.
