Sad news today with Dunoon AFC folding! Enjoyed my trips over to play them. Surely someone needs to offer the boys wanting to play a lifeline?

ALMOST HALF a century of football in Dunoon is to be lost as Dunoon Amateurs’ future hangs in the balance.


This newspaper revealed a fortnight ago that the club were scrambling to put a team together ahead of the dawn of a new season amid a fresh appeal for new blood to carry on the club’s history.


But it has now been confirmed that the situation is far worse than originally feared as ‘the Ams’ confirmed today (Wednesday July 2) on social media that the club will now fold with immediate effect.


The move now means that there will be no grassroots pathway for mainstream sport in Dunoon, with the likes of Shinty and Cricket clubs amalgamating with those elsewhere across Cowal and Bute.


A source close to the club told this newspaper that there had been an overriding feeling that the Ams wouldn’t be able to fulfill a fixture list this year due to a lack of numbers.


The club haven’t been able to fulfill any of their pre-season friendlies and weren’t listed in the newly formed Caledonian Amateur Football League due to kick off this weekend (Saturday, August 5).


Despite numerous pleas on social media for new players, calls have gone unanswered – leaving the club’s committee with no choice but to withdraw from all playing duties this season, just days before the season was due to begin.


A radical change has seen the club have around 30 committed bodies to not even being able to field a starting eleven in a matter of weeks.


Club Secretary Brendan Mcilkenny told this newspaper that after the best part of ten years playing for ‘the Ams’, he can’t believe that it’s came down to telling the very few remaining committed bodies that any hopes of continuing their footballing journey lie elsewhere.


The social media post confirming the decision sparked mass reaction from Dunoon residents and has even spread over the water to Greenock ,where an offer has been made to try and help out any players left in the lurch

The reply read: “If any of the boys left over are looking for a team, I still speak to the manager at Inverclyde Ams based in Greenock, who has said he would have you over.”

I think it’ll end up being Saturday morning only soon with the more ambitious amateur sides trying to join WOSFL if they have or can get the facilities

The Scottish Premier AFA seems a bit unstable at the moment. Already lost 8 or 9 teams from the Central Scottish or Scottish AFL (either because they folded or joined other leagues). Every clash between former Central Scottish and Scottish AFL sides ended in the Central Scottish team hammering the opposition as well. 27-0 and 12-0 are crazy results. Interesting to see how the season goes.

You can take another one off that list as Castemilk Dynamo have folded. Of the 19 teams who finished last season in the Central Scottish, only 12 are left in the Scottish Premier (three have folded and four have moved to other leagues).

LEAFA down to 37 with Balerno folding.

Can see the sat pm football turning into the like one league that suits each region with the amount of teams dropping like a West of Scotland amateur league, east of Scotland etc

Seems that modern life is catching up in Scotland, maybe it's the lack of youngsters who aren't/ don't want to commit to playing. A shame that some big names are folding, always thought that both Wales and Scotland were immune, their kids always looked interested and leagues stayed strong.

Clubs at every level above, including the very bottom of the senior pyramid, have bigger matchday squads with the increasing numbers of subs available. That probably leads to there just not being anything like as many players to go around.

The east region already has three separate leagues covering what is the East of Scotland League area (Fife, Lothians, Borders), it's the west that needs to sort itself out so that there are a couple of regions (i.e. Ayrshire, Glasgow, Central/Stirling) rather than three leagues covering the same area.

With Castlemilk and not Lesmahagow folding, it means there will be no relegation from top flight in Scottish premier. Means a lot of meaningless games already as really it’s a 2 horse race now between St Pats and Bannockburn.

Bit early with that campsie seem to have improved and did obc not beat Bannockburn last season am sure they have improved aswell. What's more worrying it's doesn't bode well for the new setup or amateur football two very good teams gone

just like your league then with Dumbarton and Doune sharing in the last few years with the occasinally blip

I don't think it's a time for d*ck measuring and my league is better than yours carry on. The ammy game (particularly in the afternoon) is in terminal decline.

There will be nothing left of it in a handful of years at this rate.

We need solutions asap.
