Oceanlineayr
There are good videos on YouTube from the people who sneak into these abandoned buildings showing how utterly gubbed the interior was. The groups wanting to save it were deluding themselves given the costs (that 100% would have went over budget) and the fact that Ayr high street is a wasteland and more retail space (one of their planned uses) would have been pointless. The glow shows how widespread the fire got.

It could be repaired and made operational for a mere £9.5 million. The feedback from the council was kind of, why and what for? There isn't a need or a purpose for a building that size in the town any more. Aye that's the thing that got me, how on earth could anyone make that profitable. A hotel (what else could it really be used for) that size, in Ayr, isn't going to be viable. It closed in the first place because there was never any guests. In truth, there's now a chance to make a proper transport hub once they demolish everything. Big footprint there with the hotel gone, could easily make one big combined train / bus station that really benefits the town. Also, the fire is still going strong this morning, they can't get past the scaffolding. Maybe end up more of a land clearing than a demolition. Richey Edwards
Should have been torched years ago and replaced with a multistorey car park.
Scary Bear
It’s a shame that the fate of these older buildings, which are usually some of the best architectural features in towns, is to rot for a few decades then get torched. Doesn’t seem right.

Billy Jean King
Rumours locally 2 teenagers are being held by police which is no surprise given it was kids the last time albeit it was a very minor fire before. Will be one in the eye for the hundreds of local conspiracy theorists who seem sure the Council have torched it. Some utter loonball going as far to say Councillors themselves. Wild how screwed up some folks minds are these days.
diegomarahenry
The hotel has been empty for years, burst pipes all over the place, partial roof collapse etc. Every video from urban explorers talk about the floor being rotten and damp. The hotel looks like it’s gone up like a pile of kindling so it surely can’t be a case of someone dropping a lit fag.

I was watching a TV program just the other night which showed Judge Rinder in a kilt ( a vision to behold, although it wasn't clear if he was wearing anything underneath ). The program was based on an Ayrshire Hotel which charged £5000 a night for a room, with full bookings ! With these kind of room rates and bookings, the cost of any renovation would soon be covered. Just a thought

Just a thought There aren’t any hotel chains interested or they would have bought it years ago. The biggest hotel in the town is a bit of a dump. Locally there is the Marine, Lochgreen, the hotel at the racecourse, Turnberry and the chain hotels in Glasgow are less than an hour away.

While blaming councillors is obviously ridiculous, it's hardly an absolutely wild conspiratorial leap to raise an eyebrow at a listed building with a private owner which would cost a ridiculous amount to repair suddenly burning down and needing immediate demolition, when this curiously happens several times a year across Scotland with property developers waiting in the wings to throw up flats.

So was it a payment straight to the kids bank accounts or did someone arrange for a brown envelope out of petty cash

Oh it happens (we have a very "unlucky" prop developer locally whose buildings suffer terribly from fires and other such "accidents") but suggesting a LA paid some wee neds to torch a building is crazy stuff.
