Sons vs Sevco: Alex Lowry Memorial Edition

I'm just happy it didn't turn into the performance and result against Rangers B. We seemed to put an absolute shift in and as wasteful as Rangers were they were always going to get goals just through the number of chances. Overall it's a payday and we didn't make a complete arse of it. Hopefully Orsi is fine for league duty again as well

I couldn't really fault us at all tonight. Michael Ruth's shift was as good as I've seen any Sons striker put in against far greater opposition, and I think he'll have caught a few eyes. Finlay Gray too was very sharp and his reputation should continue to grow.

Kalvin and Carlo played well too and I was glad to see them turning in a performance like that on such a big stage.

I really feared an absolute doing with now Long/Hogarth, Newbury and Durnan. But in all honesty it didn't ever look on the cards; most of Rangers threat came from us giving them the ball as we panicked in our own half.

The two goals were probably evident of that. Both were very avoidable and you can't give a team like Rangers chances like that. It was frustrating to go in at 0-2 at half-time, especially given Broun had only had one save to make - and McCrorie had reacted superbly to keep out Michael Ruth at the other end. But that's what always happens to us in these games.

As others have said, Ryan Wallace has to start up at Elgin next week. He has a quality very few others in our team have. I'd imagine Gallagher Lennon will replace Matty Shiels at left-back too with Cian Newbury returning at centre-half. Ryan Blair didn't have the greatest of games, but the poor guy is a centre-mid playing left-back with James Tavernier in opposition.

I thought everything I've read about Rangers was accurate. They create chances, they are maybe a bit predictable, Borna Barisic is miles behind Ridvan Yilmaz and, my goodness, do they need a centre-forward.

Cyriel Dessers has obviously taken a battering. But I don't think I was prepared for just how bad he is in real life. He looked like a goalkeeper playing up front (and not Ali Adams) with the way he leans back when he shoots. He's just got nothing about him at all; he's not strong, quick, aggressive. His touch isn't great, he isn't agile. He can't finish. I'd love to know who scouted him and if they are still in a job. Because I could've given you about 10,000 better ways to spend 3.5m or whatever it was.

The atmosphere itself was actually quite decent in the ground. There was a smattering of clapping at the Rangers goals, but little more than that. I think most were with Sons supporting pals, so it was all fairly friendly around me.

Not the result I was dreaming of. But a performance that I think did the players proud. And a game I'm delighted to get out of the way.

His AI glitch of going for a stroll in the six yard box against East Fife was still one of the strangest things I can recall seeing.

Is Gallagher Lennon a left back then, Jan? Or at least capable of playing there? I was under the impression he was a centre half until this evening.

That was only my third in-person Sons game of the season, but I’d still take a day out at the rock over Stamford Bridge, which I’ve only missed three fixtures at, any day. The two really don’t compare.

As you well know LWL the goalkeeping position is a specialist one, and it also defines the relationship with, and confidence levels in, the defence.  Whilst Harry Broun can make decent saves, especially on one-on-ones, confidence and positioning at cross balls and corners are too often a lottery and that often sees him fall short on that criteria above.  I have to agree with you.

There was a moment in the first half where he was in no man's land and it was sheer luck that the ball ended up in front of him where he was able to get hold of it. He's still very young however and maybe a loan spell will do him good rather than sitting on the bench for us but I do fear that we're a level too high for him at the moment.

Given the way Brouns family have been going on social media I doubt Harry will ever play for us again. A real mess of a situation but everything I've seen of him suggests he's about 2 leagues above where he needs to be right now.

I watched the game via Sons TV as it was the only thing I had access to yesterday so I didn’t see the whole palava with the fannys behind the fence. Why did the polis just let them stand there setting off flares and fireworks the whole game? If that was a group of wee Dumbarton fans I can guarantee you they would’ve been chased long before kick off.

Absolutely. Remember the wee guys standing on bikes during covid got told to move? Pathetic.

I thought the police might have intervened when there were fireworks flying across the pitch. Eventually a couple of officers wandered over and stood near that corner of the ground and done nothing else as far as I could see.

I don't think there was any trouble at the game at all that I could see outside of smoke bombs which seemed to be immediately chucked and basically just blocked the view for about 30 seconds
