Rodhull
Heading to Hamburg for 3 nights in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on things To do? Couldn’t find a thread about it which I was a little surprised by. Already got tickets for a game and planning to wander around the old town area to see the town hall, churches etc and then wander down to the docks area and the Elbephilharmonic. I’m sure I’ll head down to the Rieperbahn at some point as well but was wondering if there was anything else people would recommend. Don’t really mind if it’s touristy or not. Not really fussed about seeing the miniature wonderland thing that seems to be highly rated in all the travel blogs but besides that am open to whatever.
itzdrk
I'm in Hamburg a lot but only in St Pauli district. So I can only recommend anything in that area. For me it's a holiday for the football so I don't bother with sightseeing. I'm just getting hammered for 3/4 days. I'd recommend not actually drinking on the reeperbahn when there, there's good bars just off it. But on it it's just all tourist traps. There's Beatles-Platz on it if you walk up it towards Altona. There's always a wee walk down Herbertstraße as well for a laugh . First time I had a hotel over that way I got lost finding it, had never heard of the street and was walking up and got a surprise . My favourite bars are: "Old Sailor", Gaststätte https://g.co/kgs/4tVdrwD Tippel II https://g.co/kgs/TzXCyWA Others that are similar if you like the look are St Pauli Eck & Kitty I wouldn't necessarily recommend it without a warning but I like it. Elbschlosskeller is open 24/7 and is totally nuts. You will be buying a homeless guy a bottle of Astra if you go in, just roll with it . You'll get good scran at Kleine Pause https://maps.app.goo.gl/1ykrMcQN6PTKu7CLA Lucullus (street food stall) https://maps.app.goo.gl/ztfJDZX5TSwPWtqS6 Top tip I can give you is if you are getting a train from the airport to download the HVV app. You'll get downstairs and there will be a million folk not understanding how to work the 3 ticket machines. If you buy it via the app you can avoid all that nonsense. What game are you going to? Edited March 3 by itzdrk

Wrong thread, I know.
Rodhull
Cheers man yeah I only planned to go down the Reeperbahn after the game on the Sunday. Trying to avoid the stag-dos etc. was going to check out some Beatles stuff and then maybe some of the bars closer down to the water but those links look decent. Got tickets for Hamburg v Wehen Wiesbaden. Ideally I would have preferred to go to St Pauli but my pals a Rangers fan who’s talked about going to see Hamburg for years to just went along with that. Plus with them both doing well this season and promotion being tight I’m guessing that game would probably be easier to get tickets for. Aye I read up about the subway etc and saw that they didn’t have a tap and go type system like London or the buses here in Edinburgh so already downloaded the app. I’ve been to Munich and Berlin before and public transport over there always seems decent so I imagine Hamburg will be the same.

Sportpub https://maps.app.goo.gl/3nQxhZWztpfsDwVq5 If it's into the evening I would suggest not going to that area. I've never had any bother myself and I usually get a hostel in that part of the district but know people who have, afternoon kinda time is usually grand for all. You'll get to walk past the absolutely terrible 'London Pub' on the way which was painted as a union flag last time I saw it. St Pauli is very difficult to get tickets for at any time, always easier to go see the dinosaur. Sounds like you have it in hand anyway! Only other thing I'd say is that Hamburg airport security is a bit shit and slow as a heads up for coming home.
Stellaboz
A wander around the old harbour area is decent, can actually get fish and chips near there.

Wrong thread, I know. I had a trip in October and was there for like 5 days so a lot is a sloppy blur. Coretex Records is a very cool music shop in Kreuzberg, if you buy a gig ticket from them it's very visually pleasing. Best bars I went to that were sorta in that area was Oberbaumeck, Franken Bar, Clash, Feuermelder, Astra Stube. Went to see Tasmania Berlin which was alright but they ran out of beer which was killer. Edited March 3 by itzdrk

I’m going on my mates stag do that weekend and we’ve got tickets for the game too. I’ve no idea what to expect of Hamburg at all @itzdrk your recommendations seem a lot enjoyable than the suggestions of Hooters from some of the lads in the stag do group chat…will I see if I can peel them away
Craig fae the Vale
It's been a while since I've been but it's a great city. Would recommend a river cruise, I really enjoyed that. And if you're looking for food, there's a few of them called Schweinske, which unsurprisingly specialise in pork, and I've never had anything less than a massive, tasty meal there.

Only other thing I'd say is that Hamburg airport security is a bit shit and slow as a heads up for coming home. Hamburg Airport security was a riot on Sunday night. The majority of our group had their boarding passes and headed straight through, 3 of us had to wait for ours from the chief organiser (the stags dad). We got shown to the left, through security in 10-15 minutes ish. All the other lads that had went through 20 minutes before us got shown to the right and didn’t get through til well after us Anyways, the Volksparkstadion is pretty cool and was a good atmosphere for a run of the mill league game. It’s everything I’d love Hampden to be. We were debating afterwards where we thought Hamburg would sit in the Scottish Premiership. I reckoned maybe in between the gap from Hearts to the OF. Quite an interesting place Hamburg, we got a tour and the guide said the girls in the window on the Herbertstraße have water guns filled with piss to fire at women. We thought he was taking the mick, then seen the water guns leaning against the windows We were drinking in the Academy just off the Reeperbahn on Saturday night, lively pub with good music. Few of us befriended some Germans and they took us to another pub which I’ll be fucked if I can remember the name of but we didn’t leave there til 5 in the morning. Also for anyone going in future, please visit the U-boat museum and tell me if I missed out. I walked past it on Saturday morning and didn’t have time to go in for a look
Rodhull
Yeah had a good weekend too. Did a lot of walking over the weekend and my legs have only just recovered. Didn't have any issues with the airport but that may have just been because we came back on Monday afternoon which is presumably a bit quieter. Enjoyed the game too was impressed by the stadium but probably a bit less though with the standard of the game. Expected a bit more. Hamburg looked really nervy until they got the goal and settled down but I suppose thats probably a result of their recent defeats and automatic promotion possibly slipping away again. Went to the old sailor bar for a couple after the game. Nice wee pub. Found plenty of decent places to eat and drink so would definitely recommend the city. Couple of pals already talking about trying to go to Cologne next.

That’ll do me!

All kinds of other German beers like Veltins, Krombacher, Warsteiner, Paulaner, Hofbrau etc had advertising outside pubs but never saw them once.
Caro-Kann
This place https://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/exchange/about/image-film-wunderland/ I thought was amazing when we visited about 10 years ago and it's got a lot bigger since then.

Weird that they don't have a Hamburg beer, at St Pauli you'll be getting an Astra and you can buy that anywhere.

Aye I was surprised at that too. I think they traditionally had a relationship with Holsten Pils but I don't think that's brewed in Hamburg itself anymore either.
