League positions since 'The Split' was introduced

Recommended Posts

@Dons_1988 pointed out in the mathematical milestones thread that 9th is Aberdeens natural position when not qualifying for Europe. This prompted me to look into whether we'd finished in every position from 2nd-11th since the 12 team league was introduced.

The answer was surprisingly no, we have never finished 5th.

2nd x 4

3rd x 3

4th x 7

5th x 0

6th x 1

7th x 1

8th x 2

9th x 3

10th x 1

11th x 1

So in the 23 seasons since the 12 team league was introduced the Dons have finished in 9 of the 12 available positions. I'm thinking Hearts might have the full bifter of 2-12 and I reckon there's a fair chance that Hibs, Killie and Dundee Utd might have 3-12.

How have fellow P and B'ers clubs fared in the top flight since the 12 team league was introduced.

I think Saints will have done 3-12.

Edit - aye.

2nd x 0

3rd x 1

4th x 3

5th x 1

6th x 3

7th x 1

8th x 3

9th x 1

10th x 1

11th x 1

12th x 1

Hearts have only finished bottom 6 four times. We love to be 3rd or 5th with an occasional frisson with 12th.

2nd x 1

3rd x 7

4th x 2

5th x 5

6th x 3

7th x 0

8th x 1

9th x 0

10th x 1

11th x 0

12th x 2

looks like 5th is hearts natural place in things. Makes sense.

We have apparently never finished 4th.

Almost an even split between top and bottom 6 too.
11 Top 6 finishes, 12 Bottom 6 (13 including this season of course).

2nd - x2
3rd - x3
4th - 0
5th - x3
6th - x3
7th - x3
8th - x4
9th - x1

We've never finished bottom of either half of the split in the current 12 team set-up, and our most common position has been second-bottom of both halves.

1st - 0
2nd - 0
3rd - 1
4th - 2
5th - 4
6th - 0
7th - 3
8th - 3
9th - 2
10th - 3
11th - 4
12th - 0

Gary Locke's Galacticos would have finished 11th in 2013-14 if not for the points deduction.

We woz robbed.

Apart from the gloriously mid-table nature of that list - it's striking how few times we've finished in the bottom 4 over that long period of time (it feels like it's happened way more than that). If we end up 9th this season, I'm restarting the Kettlewell Out campaign.

I'm convinced we finished 4th under Billy Davies when John Boyle was spending all the money - assume that was pre-split.

We did aye.

1999/00 under Davies - the season before the split was brought in. However, that's the only instance in our entire top flight run since 85/86.

Weirdly we're hardly ever in the same half as Aberdeen and Hibs for the split. Before last week we hadn't played Aberdeen post-split since 2016 when we finished 5th and they were 2nd. As far as I can see the last time we played Hibs in one was the 6-6 game which feels absolutely mental.

(We'd potentially have played both in 2020 if not for lockdown)

A byproduct of this is that we've been pretty lucky at timing our "good" seasons while at least one of them (or Hearts, or Rangers) are in meltdown. Basically we've never really been in a top six where the other 5 are all much bigger and better than us, meaning there's a pretty gettable European spot. At the same time, we quite often go into the bottom six as favourites for 7th.

Basically a long winded way of saying that we've ended up with a few more 2nds,3rds,5ths,7ths and 8ths and a few less 6ths,9ths, and 10ths than you'd probably expect.

We had a brilliant opportunity to try to get fifth this year but the Warnock experiment killed all hopes. Maybe next year.

Given our history you can see why Dee fans are delighted to make top 6 this year.

6th - 3
7th - 1
8th - 1
9th - 2

12th - 4

Looking likely you'll finish 6th again. Seems a very Dundee thing to do to make the top 6 on 4 occasions and never threaten Europe.

As likely to finish bottom as to finish fourth - it's a crazy ride being a Hearts' fan at times.

That would 100% be funnier if we hadn't been 3rd most often (which I have to admit surprised me)
