Thought May also helped improved us also when he came on too and the balance looked much better. Smith and McPake supporting just isn't the answer in a 5-2-3.

Essel looked okay if an absolute stick on for a suspension at some point this season. A proper LWB will help too; a total waste of Careys abilities having him tracking back so much.

Had a right good elbow on one of the Brechin players at one of our throw-ins in the first half. Not sure if there would’ve been enough in it or not regardless, but it gave me a slight bit of the fear that he’ll take a bit of time adjusting to VAR.

Can easily see East Fife winning this tomorrow between a Morton team needing to gel where we're unsure of the best XI and Campbell's record v Imrie.

I had 1-0 or 2-1 in my head with this, not the absolute pumping that was dished out and which East Fife's performance entirely merited. Comfortably the better team in every area of the park, and I thought our days of being haunted by Alan Trouten were done - we released him 20 years ago!

Two seasons ago in this competition we lost 2-0 to a Clyde team who would go on to only win 5 games all season in League One, before getting 57 points in what was a very good season so we can't declare that the season is definitely going to be a disaster on the strength of this result, but alarm bells are ringing nonetheless after that performance.

The defence appeared to have more depth on paper precisely because the increased numbers could keep Broadfoot away from the team. If we're going to pick him anyway when we have alternatives available, then that on paper improvement doesn't apply. An absurd performance from a player who is simply miles out of his depth and needs to retire for his own good as much as ours.

The first goal was poor from both Delaney and Boyes failing to clear their lines, but frustrating as it was it happens. It's unfortunate but it's not some totally unforgivable howler. Broadfoot conceding the penalty however was just abysmal. The ball in itself was dealt with, but before the corner had even been taken he'd given up on tracking his man's run and just rugby tackled him. The ref was looking right at it and immediately knew it was a penalty, as soon as he saw there was no advantage he pointed to the spot. Genuinely laughable stuff which would see a teenage centre back banished from first team football to never return: this is a 39 year old.

The third is a peach of a strike from Trouten, but he's been given far too much room to do it. Not sure who it was who stood off him when he should have been closed down as soon as he's shaped to shoot.

We knew the attacking signings would need time to gel so not writing anyone off yet, but Davies, Reynolds and Lyall all looked out of their depth with the East Fife defence strolling through the game with the cigars out. Davies especially was lost and comfortably outmuscled any time the ball went near him. A weird choice to have Davies on the right and Reynolds through the middle. Moffat looked handy when he actually got on the ball, but he's got a lot to learn about movement and positional sense off it.

A much improved Morton performance, with a few goals scored, needed to have any chance of progression from the group. Not sure I hold out too much hope for that.

Looks like we are starting with our strongest available team.

Strongest team surely has Wilson in it, but more or less.

Say no to Kirk Broadfoot.

You are correct of course.

Looking forward to seeing Alloa back in action tonight. Think we're probably two or three players away still and most likely loans. Given our success with loans last season and previously in the Goodwin era I'd hope we'd be well placed to get some decent prospects in. In the meantime we can hopefully build a bit of momentum through these games ahead of the league starting. Should be looking to do much better at least than the shambolic group stage effort under Brian Rice last season.

Two points dropped!!!

And Alloa very fortunate to win the bonus point when their only shots on target in the entire game were in the penalty shootout. Our keeper never had a save to make the entire game, but totally our fault for not putting our chances away!!!

Anyway still top of the group and still the two supposedly “easiest” teams to play!!!

Good argument for winter football as that was dire 😁. Even allowing for us missing a few and squad not being finished it was poor fare and resembled a friendly, never got the ball down and no control in midfield, no threat from the three behind the striker either whenever we did get possession. It was worrying also to lose two players injured and finishing up with 10 men because of that. I suppose we can say the defence did fine. Stevie coming back at the weekend will improve the midfield massively but an awful lot of work to do in the weeks ahead, but we do have time on our side.

If anyone deserved a bonus point it was East Fife. Not that they were particularly good but clearly further down the road than us in their preparations.

Was impressed with East Fife tonight, for me, comfortably the better side for all but 10-15 minute spell we had at the start of the second half.

May not have created a massive amount of chances but took a really good save from Morrison in 1st half and then the Nathan Austin header at the back post in the 2nd was the really big opportunity to win it.

Brutal from us this evening. Didn’t really feel like Brechin were scoring at any point, but you could never be too certain with Broadfoot on there.

Early days, but I’m not seeing much of anything from our new attackers.

Actually..... Broadfoot had an ok game and looked the calmest player on the park after Boyes went off.He at least attempted to keep the ball on the deck.
