Petty Things That Get On Your Nerves...

There are only 3 acceptable ways to eat a pancake:

Thick pancakes should be smeared with butter/sunflower spread and then lots of jam.

French style crepes should be doused with lemon juice and sprinkled with sugar.

American pancakes should be served warm, stacked and accompanied by either yogurt, fruit and honey or maple syrup and crispy streaky bacon.

I had American style pancakes with bacon and maple syrup in Elgin a while back. The pancakes, bacon and maple syrup were as they should be but the meal was a dry stodgy mess. Why you say? No knobs of butter allowed to melt over the stack. Essential ingredient.

Schoolboy error.

Drizzle a little syrup on each pancake as you stack them and it'll soak in.

Still not the same without butter. I would have asked for some but being in Elgin assumed I'd get Stork margarine.

Margarine is worse than Hitler.

I totally agree.

Growing up my mum used to buy margarine all the time. In my ignorance I only mildly disliked margarine up until the day I finally had a slice of toast and butter.

Not sure I've ever forgiven my mum to be quite honest.

A fried pancake is fucking glorious. Obviously this would normally be an accompaniment to a cooked breakfast but even just with some scrambled eggs - pretty damn good.

Adding ingredients is cheating. Like me saying I like baked flour......

.... But only if you add eggs, butter and sugar
