Petty Things That Get On Your Nerves...

Whilst looking at prospective house purchases, I couldn't help noticing that a good few owners had gone down the artificial lawn route.

All I could think was it'll end up stinking of various animal's piss.

We bought a house with a lawn.

Aiden/Ayden is such a jakey name.

It's a little know fact that everyone who is called Aiden works in a call centre.
And not even a semi-respectable Tier 3 technical specialist call centre, they all work in an outbound sales call centres trying to punt shite like new kitchens.

I was at school with a guy called Aidan who became an award-winning journalist with the Scotsman and has written a number of football-related books, including one about the 2016 Cup Final. (Okay, that last one is for sale for six quid in The Works, but it's still a proper book.)

Roundabout use in Dumfries is the worst.

A far worse example of bad marking is at the Dalscone roundabout. Three lanes - turn left, straight on and turn right - turned into two, one for turn left and straight on another for turn right ... ok so far, apart from when they decided to mark the right turn lane with a straight ahead arrow

This is a pet hate of mine. There was a line added to the design codes which said something like "avoid right turn arrows on roundabout approaches where there is a high number of foreign drivers and potential for confusion". The inten

Cheers. Couldn't quite remember which was which as it was 25+ years since my apprenticeship in consultancy. Seem to recall a lot about "deflection" and "flair" lengths though?!

Deflection is a design requirement for safety. Basically can't have entry too straight as people can drive on too fast/not give way. Entry path radii cannot exceed 100m on standard and 70m on compact roundabouts. Flare length is basically an addition to the calculation about the length of additional lanes on approach.

Councils have the right to mark roundabouts as they see fit to be fair. I do a bit of design work, and I can often mark them like that.

Why contradict the highway code though? Especially when most cars will go over or right. By doing that there they're more likely to have two lots of traffic queuing for the right hand lane whereas had they had left well alone and not made a complete arse of it the traffic would have flowed better.

Don't know the location. Like I say whenever I design something it's a calculation based on what works best for traffic flows. Incidentally I don't think there is a rule that if there is 2 lanes, then the inside is for ahead and right lane for right. In the picture it's 2 lane exits, and just showing a diagram of typical movements. Certainly isn't in design terms.

i try and avoid using chip and pin or contactless. doesnt feel like your spending money

It bloody well feels like you're spending money when you check your bank statement.

The easy way to remember you are spending money, is that shops, pubs and restaurants don't usually give stuff away.

Morons who use chip and pin when their card is capable of contactless payments.

For some reason my Amex contactless is often declined in the Shell garage but goes through fine with Chip and Pin so rather than waste time doing both methods I just go for chip and pin in the petrol station.

What's the point of an Amex card?

To pay for things.

But a lot of places don't accept them because they charge the retailer more. What benefit do you get over Visa, Mastercard whatever?

The membership rewards scheme is pretty impressive which gets me cheap flights. Thats the main driver. It's also a charge card so one bill per month.

Tbh the only places that come to mind that don't accept it are B&Q and Tony Macaroni.
