Deciding when to declare etc wouldn't disappear with 5 guaranteed days, but they know how long they are playing for. Weather, and weather forecasts can change quickly, particularly over 5 days. Hardly a farce. Aus should have declared earlier yesterday. They knew the forecast for today. No one to Bose but themselves. With 5 tests being played over 7 weeks, there is no way they could start adding extra days here and there because of the weather. They might then have got a few England wickets down on Sunday, but in truth the weather was so poor on Monday that there wouldn't have been enough time on the field to get all 10 wickets. On the other hand, what if it hadn't rained at all today with England only chasing 250? It's a fine margin, you could argue that another 50 runs may have forced the follow on. It also takes more time out the game and then if the follow on is not achieved, the draw looks a stick on. Had the weather not come in yesterday the Aussies had a good chance despite not making England follow on as they had made a declaration. Also the last thing a captain wants is a front line bowler (or any bowler really) getting an injury to a finger whilst batting. There's so many fine lines in test cricket like this, and that's what I love about it. You'll get the experts on comms disagreeing about what they would do in situations. It's always nice to stick a batting side in late in the day also after a long day fielding in the sun, especially if the strike bowlers have had their feet up in a dressing room watching their batsman put over 500 on the scoreboard. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not too many sides actually manage it at the best of times, the pitch is worn to f**k,if anyone has actually had a look at the state of a last day wicket they will understand why runs are normally hard to come by. There are basically craters where the bowlers feet land and run off. There are cracks big enough to lose a fucking pet dog down and the surface becomes loose like a loose paving slab. The bounce of the ball is therefore " a little bit erratic".. 250-280 would have been plenty. The trouble with yesterday is that the overhead conditions were probably the best of the test match for bowling, but they also led to the game being ended early... cricket is a right b*****d sport for that sort of thing. Fuctifano Posted August 6, 2013 Share Posted August 6, 2013 (edited) Not so much in test matches, but in county games there will have been loads of games towards the end of the season where the captains agree on a run chase if both teams have something to play for and some pish bowlers are put on so the batting team can slog away to get the agreed amount of runs before the captain declares. Bear in mind the Cronje declaration wasn't looked at with too much suspicion at the time, it was the last game of a series where SA had already won and the alternative would have been a glorified net session.
