peasy23
Compton goes for 45 and tea is taken 4 balls early, 167-3. England were looking comfortable at that point but with Taylor going first ball after tea then it all of a sudden doesn't look so rosy. 184-4 now, Root had scored quickly to start with but he has slowed down a bit now he knows he needs to stay around for a while.
jmothecat
Root and Stokes playing well. Sensible batting by Root, picking up runs on offer but not trying to force it. 216-4.
jmothecat
Root out on 50. Just as I felt England were getting back into a good position South Africa get a crucial wicket. Ebbed and flowed this match. Last year Root managed 13 fifties in test matches, more than any other batsman, but only managed to convert three of those into centuries. peasy23
Yep, England have been just on top all day for me but another wicket or two changes all that.

Yep, really put the bowlers and Amla under pressure. Good position to get to 450+ tomorrow.
Leicesterlichtie
England in a great position after day 1. What's gone wrong with SA?
die hard doonhamer
England in a great position after day 1. What's gone wrong with SA? No depth in their bowling ranks and a piss poor captain. And they can't bat either.
Leicesterlichtie
A bit like the west indies.
YHallSaint
22 yo is no age, no news of what happened yet http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/12078643/Sussex-announce-the-death-of-bowler-Matthew-Hobden.html
Bobby Skidmarks
England in a great position after day 1. What's gone wrong with SA? The number one bowler in the world is injured as their best support bowler. And any side losing Kallis and Smith would suffer.
jmothecat
Good start to the day by Stokes and Bairstow. Stokes gets his century, currently on 121, Bairstow has his 50. Stokes is scoring at a thunderous rate.
wulliemc
I'd be embarrassed to be SA right now. Awful stuff from them but Stokes still has to put it away and he is. Some nice classy shots from Bairstow too.

Every time they show thar bit if the crowd with the fake beards I can't help thinking of the stoning scene from Life of Brian.
jmothecat
Stokes gets 150. Bairstow on 78. Hope he can get his century, he's played well since coming back into the side and deserves it.
jmothecat
Stokes is having the time of his life out there. 181, he's hit five sixes this morning.
peasy23
The ball must look like a Mitre size 5 for Stokes just now, he's middling just about everything.
