Chaps: I'm looking for a replacement pannier set for my (cheap) hybrid bike. Used for the basic essentials, and occasionally some paper work ie not heavy use. My present one has served well, but the board backing has aged and the bags flop towards the wheel. Also the fixing straps annoyingly touch the wheel. Any suggestions? Ta.

You log your activities on Garmin Connect, not sure if you can share this with others though...?

My Daughter was also using it to monitor her running, but she now uses a Garmin Forerunner wrist strap thingy (110...?) which is obviously more convenient. TBH, you could use a device like this when on the bike to monitor your speed and log your route just as well though....

You can share the data with Strava and the rest very easily. Forerunners work with cycling too, indeed you culd take your 500 with you if you went for a jog.

It is a (very) glorified speedo but the range of data you can record is amazing and useful if you want to become a full blown lycra warrior!

Budget wise I'd be prepared to spend £500 but if I didn't need to I'd be delighted to find something decent for less. I live in Musselburgh mate.

In that case I'd thoroughly recommend this

I bought one before I got into road bikes and still love gong out in it now and again

Built to last and greatt spec for the money.

You may be able to pick one up a wee bit cheaper if anyone has a 2012 model left as theres not much difference

I didn't go to Laggan Wolftrax as it was closed and snowy but I went out with my brother around a few trails in Rothiemurcus. Great fun, when I get my bonus for the year I'm going to buy a mountain bike and try to get out regularly.

Any recommendations of a good mountian bike, price circa £300-400?

A colleague of mine bought a Carrera MTB from Halfords last year. I think it was around your budget. Very good spec and reviews, IIRC. Halfords are poor for after-sales, but you can shop around for servicing etc. if needs be.

ETA: pretty sure this is the one:

It was too fresh for me today woke up with all intentions of going for it this morning but the sight of snow sent me back to bed

Ya wimp! When I get up early to cycle to work, and the weather says "no," I go to the gym instead. I hope that makes you feel bad!

I've done that a few times. You get far more peace. Been stopped by the police twice though at this time of the meaning.

I know someone who did similar. Stopped in the middle of the Erskine Bridge to look at the view and was apprehended by the police who escorted him off. Think they were worried he was going to jump!

I got a tyre inflater for my car at Christmas, which plugs into the 12v socket and works like the ones at garages - set the PSI and it cuts out automatically.

I used it on my bike tyres last night and even though they felt hard beforehand, they were well under their recommended pressure. This morning, I couldn't believe how much easier the ride was. It's amazing to think how much resistance there is in under-unflated tyres.

I also had to cycle via the bike shop because they'd made a mess of my gears when it was in for repairs <_<
