He can still kick it but he would need to catch his kick to stop it being a knock on. since it wasn't a deliberate drop to kick.

Doesn’t need to be a deliberate drop.  Many times you see a player spill it and hack it forward before it hits the ground.

Where in the laws are you getting that from?

The definition of a kick in the laws is "An act made by intentionally hitting the ball with any part of the leg or foot, except the heel, from the toe to the knee, but not including the knee".

He did not intentionally kick that, he dropped it onto his calf.

Laws of the game

Knock-on: When a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand orarm and goes forward, and the ball touches the ground or another player before the original player can catch it.

He obviously didn't mean to drop it but he flicked his leg at it, which was intentional. IMO it's the same as dropping it in front of yourself and hacking on, which has always been allowed.

ETA actually, just saw it again and that's probably wrong.

Except you've always been allowed to kick on when the ball was lost from your hands.

Find the law that says that.

Nowhere in the rules does it say you are allowed to drop the ball forward to kick it.

Apart from the two try decsions, which haven't had that much of an effect on the game...

I've actually enjoyed the way he's reffed the breakdown. No fucking about, just pinging folk for not rolling way. It's a shame there has been serious controversy which allowed Johnson and Guscott the "he likes blowing his whistle" quips, because he's actually got that stuff right.
