The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread
flyingscot replied to djchapsticks's topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
2011/112 was pretty comfortable. We had 35 points pre-split and 2 teams didn't get above that! -

Join the club. I look at it tables and go, oh wait only 13 points off the bottom. Then I realise that Motherwell and Dundee United have taken 23 games to get 7 more points than that! -
Some of the images from Leith Walk are laughable. Having done consultations on stuff like this, it can seem impossible. Someone, somewhere is always unhappy about something and will moan and be the loudest voice out there. Councils etc just have to grow a pair and make the best decision for their area.

Goodwin's last team vs Goodwin's last but one team
flyingscot replied to btb's topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
It is worth mentioning the context and that this isn't the club having a jab at Aberdeen FC or their fans, but the BBC. When the national broadcaster feels it's fine to have presenters and analysts being dismissive of your club, players and referring to them as 'Aberdeen rejects', I think it's entirely fine for the club to address that. The way the club has done so via social media is quite clever. This has a bigger impact than writing a whiny 'club statement' on your website and also makes those pundits and comments look silly. -
VAR in Scottish Football
flyingscot replied to Les Cabbage's topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
Aberdeen appealing a VAR call. I'd be surprised if that was overturned given it was head contact, but never know these days! -
I mean half arsing it is probably better than letting someone ruin a squad, I'm thinking Stubbs and Craig here!
-
Motherwell's form wasn't great under Alexander but it seemed a strange time to sack him as you'd just let him assemble a squad over most of the summer. Hamill doesn't seem the type to rant at the players and get them performing .

Terrific stuff from this team right now - the team spirit seems really good. -
Huwipulotu though.

That from McCrorie is even a red card in rugby. Can't fend with a forearm to the face -
Goodwin's last team vs Goodwin's last but one team

Our away form is horrible, we haven't won in a decade at Pittodrie and Aberdeen have OK home form, manager sacking bounce and have jettisoned some of your poorer performing players... I might give the betting a miss, not sure the bookies need my cash. -

Yeah, disappointed we never really got to see Reid in action. Hope he kicks on and doesn't end up swallowed up by the u23s system in England. Erhahon is a decent player, who never really seemed to cement a starting place in our team recently, so not a bad amount to get for him. -
Goodwin's last team vs Goodwin's last but one team

Aberdeen players were disgraceful against Hibs and had chucked it. Now Goodwin is away, as others have said, they'll no doubt play like Barcelona now the management team is away. -

I'm not sure Watt is where I'd be choosing to strengthen the squad, but have to trust the manager here. -
St Mirren against Motherwell
flyingscot replied to Doonhame Buddie's topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
It was peak yard stealing on throw ins for both teams. Motherwell had one in the corner flag which was impressively taken at the 18 yard line! Beaton only stopped the one that Motherwell tried on a break, so was some effort for both teams getting away with it. I think our throw ins are shite. I guess it’s a bit of a 3-5-2 issue, as we often seem well marked and if we bring over players we’re then exposed if it breaks other opposition way. I guess chucking it long forces the opposition into the box and with VAR anything can happen (penalty Rangers). -
St Mirren against Motherwell

lt was a pretty dire game. Felt like a game both sides were scared of losing rather than winning. Noticed we took safe options where as earlier in the season we were trying more difficult forward balls etc. The referee team was howling. That lino by the west stand that saw Motherwell kick it out, give them the throw to launch one of their best attacks was particularly useless. -

The aspect about VAR is the refs are talking to VAR all the way though and for some reason we don't get to hear what is being said and why. I think, especially for the highlights packages, it would be good to know the reasoning. -

I agree his form has dipped (but the whole team is not playing as well) but I'd completely disagree on that amount and would like to think we could hold out on Baccus and get a bit more. He's young, played well internationally and under contract to next season. Getting add ons will be critical, but I don't see why we would take £400k- it seems very low for what other players go for. Ali McCann went from Saints to Preston for £1m, so is that really out the ballpark for Baccus? -
The Famous Aberdeen - Season 2022/23
flyingscot replied to a topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
I don't get that statement from Aberdeen. If you decide, actually we're going to give him a chance to turn it round, then perhaps not throwing him and the players under a bus with more pressure would have helped? Ultimately for Aberdeen it's less than a year since the same thing happened for Glass, then Aberdeen paid money for Goodwin and his backroom team and backed him heavily in the transfer market. To pay off Goodwin and start again after less than a year is expensive and suggests backroom failings. Plus the names to replace Goodwin are not exactly brilliant. -
Aberdeen's Next Permanent Manager
flyingscot replied to Ludo*1's topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
I don't think I've seen a more uninspiring list. Glass and Goodwin would both last less than a year in charge if he's sacked. Surely that suggests an issue, with both manager and player recruitment here. -

I mean if County get a bit of form start winning and Brophy replaces Charles Cook as their regular goalscorer whilst our strikers fail to hit a barn door and we end up struggling at the wrong end of the table I can see a downside. -
The Famous Aberdeen - Season 2022/23
flyingscot replied to a topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
I think if you look back at his record with St Mirren this is pretty much par for the course. The season he left us we had 3 wins in 20 games before the winter break and were on a run of 11 games without a win. We then hit a purple patch when Goodwin changed the formation in the break and we won 4 and drew 1 and then Aberdeen appointed him! To be fair, we were decent enough at cup football (except the season when he joined when we drew with East Kilbride and Albion Rovers). I don't blame Goodwin for moving to Aberdeen, but I was surprised that he was up for the position given his record and said he'd need luck. As it proved.... -

I mean Dundee were also pretty defensive. We struggle to break down teams when they do that as we're more used to Premiership teams being more open and feeding on the space. -
Bath were shit and relied on penalties. Glasgow were pretty poor as well and too many errors. Very cold tonight which didn't help either. That ref was comically shite.

I think we did fairly well via Hearts (especially given Aberdeen's result a few days later) but I'm annoyed we're not further away from the bottom as we've had a decent enough season. I think we should be fine, but it's not impossible to see us drawn into a battle with a few bad results, especially as we're a bit of a thin squad.
