Man for man we have better players than Hungary, it's not really a debate.

I do think it's a debate at least, whether folk agree with it or not. I matched up both sides starting XIs from Sunday and in each position I only see a couple of instances where we had a player that's better/plays for a better club (if Tierney started that would've been 3). McGregor (Celtic) and Styles (Barnsley) at LCM and Robertson (Liverpool) and Kerkez (Bournemouth) at LWB. Even at that Kerkez is a good young player who will probably move again in an upward trajectory.

Does any Scodland victory guarantee progression or is there the usual 2 and a half million permutations?

There's still a chance that there'll be a 3rd placed team on 4 points in every group at which point it would come down to GD. That would require a remarkable set of results in the final games though so 4 should be enough.

It's probably been discussed already but a draw could actually end up being enough too depending on results elsewhere but I'd rather just get that scenario out my head and focus on winning.

This really does look like potentially being a problem position again. There is not a huge number of targets in any given year and the couple of better ones (Shiels, Waters) have gone elsewhere.

From Nareys toepoker summer transfer blog these are the left backs in Scotland recently released and still without a club.

    Kieran Ngenywa
    Flynn Duffy
    Miller Fenton
    Tommy Robson
    Euan Deveney
    Cammy Williamson

A couple of them would be decent signings but probably unrealistic targets. Williamson released by Stranraer so forget him. Wouldn't rule out waiting on the loan market and using Lyon there until then.

  4. Another encouraging sign along with signing players that actually have some pedigree is our squad is already looking quite flexible if we want to use 2 or 3 different formations when it suits. A left sided player in the mould of Houston (that can play both LB in a 4 and LWB in a 3/5) should be the next priority.

What's with the fascination with 5 at the back???

Let's get two proper wingers on- not wing backs- Tierney and Robertson decent but not worth turning the world upside to squeeze them in.

    My team: 4 1 4 1

                                                                                GK (don't care who)

Right back (don't care who)            Big lump CH              Big lump CH                Tierney (Robertson bench)

                                                                                        Gilmour

Christie (or Armstrong)                           McTominey                     McGinn                        Forest

The new wee nippy guy with a scottish grandad

A first post on the forum with a line up without Robertson or McGregor in it and calling for 2 proper wingers but only naming 1. At least it can only get better from here.

So in a good week for me in reading Stevie Clarke's mind weeks in advance, lets add this.

Hanley took over as captain when Robbo went off despite McGinn, McGregor, Tierney being on the pitch. McTominay wasnt but I doubt that's relevant. I guess that was partly a gesture towards his 50th cap but I'm not sure its solely that.

I'd say in starting Hanley this week twice Clarke's confirming he wants him starting in the Euros. Looks like he'll get the nod ahead of Porteous next week. Hanley's clearly still one of the first names on the sheet. Which is good news for QoS at least. 🙂

Aye good shout. In comparison I've been way off with a few things  Including the squad numbers with Shankland indeed moving to 9.

I like Hanley (Blackburns my English team and he was a good servant for them too) and have no problem with him starting at the tournament but I just can't fathom what Porteous has done to be dropped. Strong competition for places a good problem to have though.

I'm not certain what, if any, number waa being used by Souttar but Gordon had 24. If he is confirmed as dropped then someone will move to that. The final squad will be numbered 1-26.

Aye just realised Gordon was given 24 (and Taylor 17 which has almost always been Armstrongs number for Scotland from memory) so a couple of reshuffles for the final number allocation, presumably Armstrong to his usual number and Taylor to 24.

Would I be right in saying that Shankland will be assigned number 9 in Dykes’s absence, or will Adams take it and someone else take the number 10?

Imagine the numbers will stay as they are/were with Conway taking 9 and Morgan taking whatever number Doak was (18 I think)

  9. At least the season tickets still represent decent value even if the walk up prices are a bit of a joke. £26 per month where most months will have 2 home games is more attractive than paying £19 a whip each time and may just encourage folk to get ST's that wouldn't normally especially with the monthly instalments option.

Would like to see the minute splits over the two games be about:

GK: Gunn (180), Gordon, Clark, Kelly (All 0)

    RWB: Ralston (120), McCrorie (60)

    RCB: Porteous (120), Souttar (60)

    CCB: Hanley (60), Hendry (60), McKenna (30)

    LCB: Cooper (90), Tierney (60), McKenna (30)

    LWB: Taylor (90), Robertson (60), Tierney (30)

    RCM: Gilmour (120), McLean (60)

    LCM: Jack (120), McGregor (60)

    CAM: Armstrong (30)

    RW: Forrest (120), Christie (60)

    CF: Shankland (60), Adams (60), McTominay (60)

    LW: Armstrong (60), Doak (60), McGinn (60)

Ive got CCB only adding to 150 as id play 4-2-3-1 for the second half against Finland

Fancied checking in on this after tonights game. So far we have (without injury time included)

    Clark 90
    McCrorie 90
    Porteous 90
    Christie 90
    McGinn 90
    Shankland 90
    Gilmour 73
    McLean 73
    Robertson 66
    Forrest 66
    Hanley 45
    Cooper 32
    Tierney 24
    Adams 24
    Jack 17
    McGregor 17
    McKenna 13

Of the ones who got the full game tonight, I expect, IMO, our strongest available line up on Friday so Porteous and McGinn starting again on but come off at some point. Probably Christie starting again too if McTominay doesn't make it.

    Gunn
    Porteous Hendry Tierney
    Ralston Gilmour McGregor Robertson
    McTominay/Christie McGinn
    Adams

It was famously successful by Messi doing it for years; but also used successfully by Spain (attackers like Silva); France (Griezman); Man City (Gundogan / Ferran Torres); Firmino (Liverpool) etc.  To work well, you need an attacker who can play as a striker (they act as a #9 out of possession), but also a very technical capable midfielder who is highly mobile (operating often like a #10 in possession).  Most importantly, it needs wingers or attacking midfielders to play off it and use the space created.

Also worth pointing out that the common denominator there is a 433/4231 formation. Has any side successfully utilised a F9 in a formation with no wingers? Seems a pointless thing to even discuss when we would need to change formation to even try and implement it.

This is what I had in mind so not far off others thinking bar 2 or 3. On reflection it'll probably be Gordon instead of Gunn and it'll probably be 0 or 1 of Tierney and Robertson and not both but I will just stick with the above XI and see how close it is. Ralston, Hanley, McKenna, Taylor, Doak and another to come off bench.

Hopefully the Clyde game is away in  midweek so we don't need to bother with them.

Hopefully the good games with Motherwell and Partick Thistle are at home.

Sorry to disappoint but you'll be at home to us (and Partick Thistle) if the fixture format follows previous years.

I’m sure I read every summer he’s available that Blair Malcolm is a Clyde fan. We’re short on the left hand side just now, so wouldn’t be that surprised.

He played in a Clyde fans v fans game a good few years back

Don't think that's set in stone, last year Dunfermline (3rd pot) kicked off away to Raith (2nd pot).

I posted that as an indication of which pot plays which home and away. I know the actual fixture dates differ as we were in pot 4 the last 2 seasons, opening away to Hibs in 2022 but finishing away to Livi in 2023 (both pot 1).

Is it pot 3 and 5 away for pot 1 teams?

    If so:

    Dundee
    Queen’s Park
    Kelty Hearts
    East Fife
    Brechin

    Thank you.

Looking at our groups fixtures last year thats correct aye.

    Pot 4 v Pot 2
    Pot 5 v Pot 1

    Pot 2 v Pot 5
    Pot 3 v Pot 4

    Pot 5 v Pot 3
    Pot 1 v Pot 2

    Pot 4 v Pot 5
    Pot 3 v Pot 1

    Pot 1 v Pot 4
    Pot 2 v Pot 3

As a pot 5 club this time round the chance of a home game on TV would boost the coffers slightly so on that basis the most likely opposition that Premier would show are Aberdeen, Hibs and Motherwell (who we've been on against before when it was BT).

As Dunning says Annan the most appealing away day in pot 4 albeit I do like Stirling but they're in our division so would edge towards Annan. Never been to ICT but doubt I'd bother in this cup and certainly not if it's midweek so probably Ayr or Partick Thistle from that pot.

At least Killie are in Europe this year as we must be due them again.

Hanley's every bit as influential as Cooper. Suspect he may captain if on the pitch and Robertson isn't. I think he has before. Honestly think if he was considering dropping a CB it would be Souttar. However, I think he'll take them all.

Agree with your point on how influental Hanley is but McGregor then McTominay/Tierney would be next in line for captaincy behind Robertson I reckon
