I’m commenting from a Wigtownshire perspective. Journey time from Stranraer to Gretna, Lockerbie or Moffat is approximately the same as to Glasgow, so South Ayrshire much more accessible. North-south travel generally very much easier in the south west than east-west. With the benefit of hindsight it’s now obvious that the original proposal for local government restructuring in 1975 - with Carrick in the same district as Wigtownshire - would have been much better for Wigtownshire than inclusion with Dumfries. If that had happened there would have been no question around Wigtownshire being in the west rather than the south for a football restructuring based on local government boundaries.

One other reason why SoS will eventually have to be at a lower level is to deal with relegations. If Annan or Queen of the South have a few bad seasons and end up at the bottom of the LL I’m sure they would want to play in the WoS rather than fall into the SoS.

The SoS doesn’t just cover Galloway and Dumfries. However I do agree that the WoS should cover this area too, with those clubs who want to play only against clubs from Galloway and Dumfries (and maybe parts of South Ayrshire, since this is more accessible from Wigtownshire than is the Far East or north of Dumfriesshire) eventually being allowed to play at a lower level in a south west league.

Biggest embarrassment of the Scottish game is the quality of our referees.

Looking at today’s bench I cannot understand why we allowed Smith (x2) and Jones to leave.

The west issue needs to be sorted out quickly. We can’t continue with a destination league for east clubs being relegated from the LL, but not for clubs from the west. If the answer is the SoS league then fine, but then make it clear that it’s the league for the whole of the west and that the SoS land EoS between them cover the whole of the LL catchment area. It will then follow that the SoS is the route into the pyramid for any west team that wants to pursue this. If not the SoS then a WoSL needs to be urgently set up, the boundaries between it and the south and east leagues demarcated, and the west juniors told that the LL feeders are the only way to join the pyramid.

Expect the bookies will now pay out on Celtic.

Perhaps the South of Scotland League should publicly remind clubs that their remit doesn’t just cover Galloway and Dumfries and that is the EoS helpfully did that they are willing to restructure to accommodate however many new members they get.
