  1. I would say qualifying for the WC or Euros with a collection of the nations greatest players, over a handful of games, might be a bit easier than challenging Celtic and Rangers multi million pound squad over 40 games.

Spectacular missing of the point there.

OK: third placed finishes. Paulo Sergio versus Eduard Malofeev. Go.

ETA: Had to laugh at the "with the nation's greatest players" bit. Who are we competing against again?

  2. Levein was a shit national coach. Who cares? Scotlands players have also been shit for Levein and every manager for the past 20 years. Hearts and The Championship are not the same setup by a long shot. Levein has something to prove as well. I am optimistic.

Except Brown, Smith, McLeish and Strachan (most of them).

Although that's largely irrelevant to us. More important is his record in the Scottish leagues, which is excellent. I don't recall many people complaining when he was awarded the Scotland job on this basis.

  3. I said I'd take a play-off place - I didn't say which one.

I'd obviously be happier with 1st place, but we can't always get what we want, can we?

You're usually a lot calmer than this - take it easy, man. 8)

"I'd bite anyone's hand off for a play-off place" means you'd bite their hand off for 4th place surely? I'm not sure what you mean with the last comment.

  4. A play-off place would give us a fighting chance of promotion - I'd take that the now.

edit: I'll say it again - resources/budget doesn't always equate with success.

This isn't about saying we've got the xth biggest budget so we'll finish in xth position in the table. Of course having a bigger budget doesn't equate with success, but it does give you a better chance of success and, therefore, sets higher expectations. When HIbs and Aberdeen were finishing in the lower half of the SPL, their fans were, quite rightly, pissed off - they should be doing better. If Queen of the South had done the same it would have been seen as a success because they'd be outperforming teams with bigger resources. It's about how we should do, not how we will do.

We should be doing better than 4th, so I certainly wouldn't be snapping anyone's hand off for it.

  5. The young guys improved a lot over the last season, but they're still far from being the finished articled - we can't assume that they'll firing on all cylinders all the time.

Like I said, a lot will depend on the signings we bring in.

At the moment, our starting XI is along the lines of:

    Hamilton

    Paterson - McGhee - Wilson - McHattie

    King - Robinson - Holt - Nicholson

    Walker

    Carrick

    with McKay, Smith, Beith, etc.

Most of these lads have the potential to be cracking players, but they've still got a long way to go, and they'll be up against decent players, many of whom will have experience, nous, and street smarts.

If you think this is going to be easy, I'd have to disagree.

I never said it would be easy. That doesn't change the fact that 4th would be a disappointing effort. We're not making predictions here - we're talking about biting hands off for 4th placed finishes in the second tier.

Posting a "this is our line up at the moment" on the first day of June doesn't really tell us anything considering we've just released a load of players who haven't been replaced yet. What would Hibs' line up be just now? They've just culled half their squad. A fair chunk of the division will only have a handful of first teamers contracted for next season.

As for your second reply: again, it has nothing whatsoever to do with thinking it's going to be "easy". That doesn't mean 4th would be a good result. It would be pretty shite considering the resources available and we should be doing better.

  6. I agree with him, we have no idea how much money Budge is prepared to spend on the team, as has quite rightly been said the priority is stability and supporting the kids coming through and not promotion, that's a big hint that we might not spend much on the team this season.

Hibs have the money to spend and are probably in a better position than us and the rest have settled teams with mostly good experience.

We shouldn't be thinking this will somehow be easy or straightforward, it won't be.

Even if we don't spend much relative to our income, we'll still have a comfortably larger budget than 7/9 other teams. It will be roughly the same as Hibs'. Add that to the possibility of a 25 point deduction for Rangers and 4th is miles away from being a "bite your hand off" type prospect.

Third would be disappointing but understandable, fourth would be pretty shite but just about acceptable and fifth or below would be a dreadful effort. This isn't a prediction of where we'll finish - I've no idea. It's just how our performance will be assessed. I wouldn't completely rule out finishing 5th but that doesn't change the fact it would be a disaster.

Given that we'll probably add at least half a dozen players (and most of the names mentioned are experienced Premierhsip players) it seems pretty strange to me to want to snap anyone's hand off for 4th just now

  7. Incredible day. Not even drunk, but I will make sure that I am totally wasted by the end of Sunday. Hasn't quite sunk in yet that I've just witnessed my team winning the Scottish Cup. Funnily enough, I thought we played nicer football against Aberdeen in the semi-final, but every player gave it their all today. Well done, guys.

Oh, and they played my song after Saints lifted the cup. And quite a few people were actually singing along. They knew the words. A total dream.

My mum (yep, I watched the game with my mum) I asked "is that Dougie MacLean?" when the song came on. No higher praise IMO.

  8. Obviously talking Feruz up as a future star before he's even played a competitive game is premature, but dismissing him just now is equally as ridiculous. As for his athleticism, he's quite clearly physically well developed for his age, much more so than any other Scottish player in that age group I can think of. I'm also struggling to think of many Scottish players with more natural pace. He also has plenty of natural talent going by some of the goals he's scored for the Chelsea youth/reserve teams.

Here's the most recent article I could find on Feruz: http://thechels.net/2014/03/feruz-pressing-for-improvements/ . The follow-up comment is particularly interesting. It suggests that Feruz has struggled to adapt his game after gaining muscle mass.

  9. Ryan Gauld is the best prospect I've seen in my time watching football in Scotland by some distance, and that's not just a reaction to his goals today. We've had plenty of young players who can ping a goal into the top corner or beat a man, but I've not seen any young players with the same level of intelligence and close-control as him. That's without mentioning that he's regularly scoring great goals and playing killer passes in the SPL at 17 years old.

You can never be sure a young player will fulfill their potential, but I'm very confident with Gauld.

  10. Perhaps. I think that 'where he lives' relates to his family. Jesse surely wouldn't kill Walt's children or wife, but I could easily see him telling Walt Jr everything. That would be the last thing Walt would want to happen.

This makes sense. That could be what the photo of Walt dressed as Santa symbolised.

  11. always wondered if Walts recent obsession with getting so much money was going back to his anger at the Gray Matter company he founded. His friends continued on and became millionaires while he had to wallow in teaching and a 2nd job to meet ends meet.

Could this be that he wanted his own "empire" to show that he still had the intelligence and drive to do it?

He pretty much said that was why he did it. Can't remember which episode it was in.

  12. Nade got a great write-up from Sheffield United fans when he signed for Hearts and started well in his first few months. He's actually got very good ball control and dribbling ability. He scored a decent amount at first as well. Unfortunately his horrendous lack of fitness/weight issues in the rest of his time at Hearts meant he showed these qualities a lot less often. That exposed his complete lack of positional discipline as he no longer had the mobility to make up for it. It wasn't as if he missed sitters all the time; he just never got himself into scoring positions. There were also reports that he'd regularly smash the ball into the top corner at training but that never translated onto the pitch for whatever reason.

f**k knows what his fitness is like just now but I can't imagine it's going to be better than it was when he left Hearts. Even so, I'd imagine it won't be exposed as badly as it was in the SPL and in terms of ability he'll still be a class above most of the league.

The 2nd division's going to be interesting next year anyway. arry.png

  13. Hearts YES (all noises point to yes)

"The opinion of Heart of Midlothian FC in regards to the current situation of Scottish football is clear and robust.

"The football mafia represented by former owners of Rangers FC and Rupert Murdoch's media are to blame for some of the worst problems to hit Scottish football and must not be allowed back in under any circumstances."

    You think?

  14. In all seriousness, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I was actually a wee bit disappointed with Hibs yesterday. The occasion demanded that they at least gave a decent account of themselves.

Don't get me wrong, it was by far the best game I've ever been to and one of the best days of my life. Winning the biggest derby ever 5-1 is brilliant, but it would have been even better if that Hibs team wasn't such a shower of utter shitebags, losers and no-marks. It's hard to even genuinely dislike most of their players tbh. They had 20,000 fans cheering them on in their biggest game ever and they completely bent over and took it up the arse. Gretna genuinely put in 10x the performance against a much better Hearts team. I almost felt a wee bit sorry for the fans. Almost. I don't feel sorry for them, but I almost did. And when I say "feel sorry for them", of course I mean the tiniest flicker of sympathy. ph34r.gif

As utterly delightful as that was yesterday, the urge to gloat isn't anything like I thought it would be. The result speaks for itself. Heart of Midlothian own Hibernian. I'm sure it'll come, though. The first derby at Easter Road next season ought to be interesting. biggrin.gif
