  1. What do we know about these 4?

From the chairman of Foundation of Hearts

    Dear Foundation member

    Election of new director, 2015

We are now ready to conduct the ballot to elect a new director of the Foundation.

Four candidates are standing. In alphabetical order, they are:

    • Andrew Burton
    • Scott Culbertson
    • Keith Sorbie
    • Louise Strutt

Andrew Burton lost his shit on Kickback because the FoH didn't correct the spelling mistakes in his candidate statement. He also looks like a shitey wee elf guy so he's out.

  2. That FF guy from JKB says Djoum was good last night.

The bigger question is why did Buaben start ahead of Pallardo.

To be fair I'd imagine the logic behind that was that Pallardo and Gomis both tend to sit back more while Buaben tries to carry the ball forward. Pallardo possibly isn't quite fully fit yet either.

Hopefully Djoum will be able to fill the Buaben role more competently.

  3. Nae sure - If you want to beat us then the easiest way is to target Logan with a big striker and hoof the ball into his area (Farmers at Ibrox in the second half the other year being the prime example). It just didn't work for you, mainly because we now have the flexibility with Shinnie for him to go left back and give us 3 in the centre. This allowed Taylor to cover Logan when the ball was hoofed forward so you got nothing from it.

I expect Neilson wanted to put the big strikers on our fullbacks, win the knock downs for Sow to skin our big centre halfs. Second problem for you there is our big centre halfs are quicker than they seem, and pretty decent on the ground, so he got bugger all out of them there too.

Neilson tried something that has worked against us in the past ,we've just now got a way to deal with it.

There was obviously some sort of tactical logic behind it but sometimes it's just better to trust our players to cause teams problems on their own merits in their actual positions. We did that in the second half and looked more threatening, although it was already too late. Juanma doesn't really contribute anything out wide aside from winning headers so if the tactic doesn't work he's basically useless.

  4. Looks like a physical midfielder who gets forward, which is something we could do with. Decent pedigree too.

I'm reasonably happy with our squad from midfield to front now. I don't think we really need another winger but if we sign Thomas and he's anywhere near the player that got a regular start for West Brom then we might be able to field two attacks that are pretty much as good as each other:

    Djoum Pallardo

    Nicholson Walker Thomas

    Juanma

    -

    Sow

    Swanson El Hassnaoui King

    Gomis Buaben

I don't even think we were particularly poor going forward on Sunday once we put players in their natural positions, but we were let down by some hopeless defending and a bizarre team selection. There were some mitigating circumstances with Pallardo and Augustyn having barely kicked a ball between them this season but we've got obvious problems at the back. I think the best thing we can do just now is to persist with what we've got, give the new players time to settle in, find our best combination at the back and try to find some consistency there. If we're still struggling by the end of the season then I'd look to bring in one or two solid defenders with experience of playing in Scotland or England.

Our squad is a work in progress and we came up against what is pretty much the finished article on Sunday. It's taken McInnes a couple of years in the Premiership to get Aberdeen to where they are, it would have been a brilliant achievement for us to get promoted and immediately be at the same level as Aberdeen. Even our shitey team took 7/9 points against them in his first season there.

  5.

    Eckersley is a decent player.

But anytime McHattie got fit he was strait back into the side. McHattie.

    Let that sink in.....

This thing about McHattie being ahead of him seems to be repeated all the time, but I'm not really sure where it comes from. Neilson rotated the full-backs after Eckersley joined but Eckersley still played more often than McHattie (he did the same with Paterson and McGhee). McHattie played his first game back from injury in a midweek game against Raith Rovers but then Eckersley came back in for the next couple of games. It was only after we'd won the league and Eckersley's departure had been announced that McHattie got a run of games at the end of the season.

  6. Why haven't Hibs tried to sign Swanson instead of signing a 10 midfielders and loads of gash strikers? A blind man could see they're lacking a difference maker.

Hopefully if we add Swanson we're still going after another box-to-box midfielder which IMO is far more important than the number 10 everyone wants us to sign for some reason.

  7. I actually feel a bit sorry for Killie fans now. Imagine wasting money on proven dross like Scott Robinson, Kevin McHattie, Stevie Smith etc.

The baffling thing is that Locke's only mitigation in our mostly woeful relegation season was - he argued - that the squad he had simply wasn't good enough even to compete. Now he's got 5 of the same players from that squad and they aren't even the decent ones (aside from McDonald and possibly Carrick who now seems to be a crock). Utterly mind-boggling.

  8. Disappointing that Neilson says we're done in terms of bringing players in. For all the "big physical team" stuff, a midfield of Walker, Pallardo, Gomis/Buaben and Nicholson/King can be a bit of a soft touch. St Johnstone predictably pressed us high up the pitch in the first half on Sunday and Gomis and Buaben were pretty much anonymous which led to a lot of mostly ineffective hoofing and we were pretty fortunate to go in ahead having created next to nothing. The second half showed we've got plenty of attacking potential when we've got more of a grip in midfield.

Pallardo coming back will help to an extent but I really don't fancy either Gomis or Buaben next to him if we want to finish in the top 3. This could be the first time I've disagreed with Neilson and Levein on a signing decision.

Then again I think he might have said the same last year before we signed Pallardo so we'll have to wait and see.

  9. A bit out of the blue possibly but Walker's performance today had me thinking... remember when we released David Smith last year?

I mentioned in another thread I rate Smith higher than Walker so more gutted at this. Has everything that Walker does IMO but with a greater physicality about himself rather than chucking himself to the floor, suppose if El Hass is about ready to start playing he'll be competing with Walker for that spot. Still seems harsh on Smith.

I trust the management team on this one although I agree with the above about Smith being of a similar standard to Walker. There's something about Walker that I just don't like though. His attitude is questionable.

I dunno if I haven't seen enough of him but I don't get the hype around Walker? Smith's impressed when I've seen him play though.

    Although...

I know I'll probably get the "flashes of brilliance" type responses but that's more than we've seen from David Smith. He has flaws in his game; he can be too greedy, he often makes the wrong decision and he doesn't contribute defensively, but these are all things that can be worked on and, in terms of raw talent, he's way ahead of Smith IMO. I'd also point out that his biggest run of games came when we were on that terrible run of form last season, and he was consistently the only player who looked like he could turn the game for us. I'd be interested to see how he does in a winning team under a proper coach.

  10. Yeah, I'm not sure when McKay's supposed to have shown he can be a consistent performer at this level because it definitely wasn't when he did play consistently at this level for us. His popularity among Hearts fans seems to largely stem from the fact he hates Hibs n that.

That said he did play well enough when I saw him last season and he still has youth on his side.

  11. We must have used close to 30 players this pre-season, almost all of whom have played at least 45 minutes when they've featured, often out of position. Given that and the fact we've rarely had more than about 3 starters on the pitch at the same time I wouldn't be in the slightest bit concerned about individual performances.

Nice flick by Sow for our goal tonight, though.
