I know I'll probably get the "flashes of brilliance" type responses but that's more than we've seen from David Smith. He has flaws in his game; he can be too greedy, he often makes the wrong decision and he doesn't contribute defensively, but these are all things that can be worked on and, in terms of raw talent, he's way ahead of Smith IMO. I'd also point out that his biggest run of games came when we were on that terrible run of form last season, and he was consistently the only player who looked like he could turn the game for us. I'd be interested to see how he does in a winning team under a proper coach.

  2. We made a total of 8 substitutions. We essentially played our second side at times as well.

Fair enough though, hope it goes well for you in the coming season. Anything or anyone stopping The Rangers winning the Championship would be hilarious.

The number of substitutions doesn't necessarily tell me anything. We changed the entire team at half time in our first couple of friendlies but none of the line-ups could be claimed to be second string because they all featured a mix of first and second choice players. In fact, this was the first friendly where we didn't really make wholesale changes and mostly stuck with the second choices throughout.

Pre-season friendly results never have any bearing on the coming season. The other day we ran Man City close and tonight we got pumped by Dundee. What conclusion should we draw from that?

  3. Realistically speaking, much of the team that played for us tonight weren't even second string. Craig Wighton is only 16 and expected to go out on loan, Cammy Kerr is our third choice RB, Nicky Riley and Kyle Benedictus have been told they are free to find new clubs. We made 8 substitutions and it was a mix of everyone. Even if that's Heart's second string I'd be concerned because one thing you need in the Championship is depth and if that's Heart's depth then it doesn't look good in regards to challenging for the title in my opinion.

There's a huge difference between one or two second choice players coming into the team and being expected to do a job and playing almost an entirely second choice line-up and expecting results.

Even then, we've played an almost entirely second string line-up at some point in every game so far and they've mostly been fine.

  4. Worth a read of the Dundee match report: Link.

For those that weren't at the game, I can testify that that's how the game played out for those who think there might be a touch of bias. Rumple (His username on here) is very fair with his post match reports and it doesn't make pleasant reading for Hearts, even if it was your second string.

The fact it was a second string line-up makes all the difference because neither that line-up nor one similar to it will ever play for us in a competitive match. Barring a catastrophic injury crisis.

  5. We were playing well before the goal, which was very well worked. Since then City have just passed the ball about the midfield and defence and we've seen a lot less of the ball.

We've played some really nice stuff and nearly took the lead when Carrick was clean through. Gomis was a stand-out - very good in tight situations and barely misplaced a pass. He looks to have a good understanding with Buaben. Everyone has looked comfortable on the ball, including the defence and Alexander.

Encouraging performance so far, even if it is a pre-season friendly.

  6. Success at international level IS assessed on qualification for major tournaments. MAJOR success is quantified by winning those tournaments. All four managers are equal in this regards. I don't give a toss how many more games they drew and how much they "nearly" qualified for the WC.

But go ahead and accept mediocrity. You probably think climbing from 85 to 72 in the FIFA rankings is a big "success" too

Sorry, but that is just complete shite. Success is relative to resources. For Germany, success might be winning a tournament, while for Andorra it might be picking up a point in the qualifying rounds. Scotland are somewhere in between. For us to be in the top 13/16 performing nations in Europe would be a brilliant achievement given the pool of players we've had to choose from since '98. The fact that no one has managed it since then is testament to that, although you've bizarrely concluded that it's because all managers automatically become shite when they walk into the Scotland job. That isn't accepting mediocrity, that's accepting reality. Oh and we're 27th in the latest rankings actually - much higher than we were when Levein was punted.

Anyway, more to the point, when did I mention "success" in the first place? I think that was you. The fact is that these managers all did a better job than Craig Levein as Scotland manager, whether you think they "succeeded" or not.

To make an equally shite statement about club football:

"Success at club level IS assessed on winning league titles. MAJOR success is quantified by winning the Champions League. Almost all Hearts managers are equal in that regards. I don't give a toss how many times we've finished "best of the rest".

But go ahead and accept mediocrity. You probably think climbing from 7th to 3rd in the Scottish Premiership is a big "success" too  "
