The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread
Buddist Monk replied to djchapsticks's topic in Scottish Premiership General Chatter
Really? I feel you do not frequent wikipedia then. You mean Chris Hughton who got Newcastle promoted, and Birmingham into the playoffs, or perhaps you mean Gary Monk who was a Swansea player, then coach, then caretaker manager then manager over a decade or so. Both of those were not randoms picked up from the lower leagues of Scotland. -

Yeah, this post is just condescending. You are wetting your pants about this and yet I am the one that's naive? -

Completely right. Completely wrong. Are you serious? The Championship is shedding jobs at the rate of 2 managers a month just now. -

Yeah, I understand why a Morton fan wouldn't really have followed his conversations, and those actions that came from them. Am I somehow ITK and have an inside track to Ross' mind? Of course not, but certainly from everything he's said and demonstrated for him to walk away from a team he has lead to the Championship title just doesn't seem "credible" as you put it. -

Please, for f**k sake, have some perspective. Carvalho is no spring chicken. Ross has had a couple of jobs, Carvalho so far has managed; Espinho, Freamunde, Vizela, Aves, Leixões, Vitória Setúbal, Belenenses, Braga, Beira-Mar, Vitória Setúbal, Asteras Tripoli, Marítimo, Sporting CP, Besiktas, Istanbul BB, Sheffield Wednesday before Swansea - and did so over 2 decades. You seem a decent poster but that analogy is just bat shit crazy. Which makes it all the more important not to shoot your bolt at the first girl who lifts her dress. Massive gamble compared to waiting 6 months and having a considerably better pick of teams (should he choose so). -

Of course he could keep Barnsley up, as I state before though it's a completely different situation than the one he found at St Mirren. I am also amazed that people, normal sensible people, who know the kudos the Scottish lower leagues have outside this country (ie: next to none) are suddenly hailing Ross as the messiah and on par with very experienced English Championship managers. Very odd. Have you actually listened to Ross over the last year? Other than saying he'd like to test himself at a higher level, absolutely everything else he has said is contrary to your premise. -

I'd be amazed if he did. If people actually took the time to look at the other candidates then they would agree with you. I certainly do. You have a relegation mired championship club and you have very experienced managers like Monk or McCarthy. Do you think Ross competes? All he's done is turn an underperforming lower league Scottish around. To us, that's fucking great, in the grand scheme of things? It's nothing. -

Exactly. Typical tabloid bullshit, with the odd push from a random bookies getting punts. We should be happy in many ways, not least that the piss stained rags that consider themselves "journalism" in this country have found a slither of column space to cover something that isn't religiously motivated. -

In the sense that Barnsley are one of the poorest bets to go to the English Premiership. My "thinking" would be based on solid logic, he's already on the up, he just needs to keep the ship steady for a month or so and he'll get the first silverware in his life (other than a 2nd div medal with Clyde decades back) and he'll be in a far better position come the summer. Not only that he won't be parachuting himself into a relegation dogfight that is considerably harder than the one he only just escaped from last season. -

Another explicit statement from someone "ITK". I just wish I had such an insight into another team's manager. -

So much mince, so little words, I really should applaud this effort. So your gambit is he goes to Barnsley to get sacked again to be hired again to get a club to the English Premiership? Good work... -

I just think we are over egging this pudding. Yes he's shown an ability to mould and direct a team to success, but other than this league what else has he done? (cue Monty Python sketch). If Ross gets into Premiership and starts taking points off the OF, only then will he be considered English Premiership level. -

As I've pointed out already, this league has been won, that's it, they are as well handing the silverware over to us now. You are also talking like this is a done deal, which it most certainly isn't. Yeah, have you looked at Barnsley's position? They aren't going anywhere other than downward. The mischievous amongst us might suggest he's got more chance of taking St Mirren the English Premier than Barnsley! -

And the non-sequitur of the week goes to... Anyway my 2 cents worth on this: I thought everyone knew that if one of the plum jobs popped up in Scotland (Dundee does not count as one of these) or an offer from abroad he'd be given the chance to speak to them. If I was in the position I'd speak to them, it's always good to get an idea of your worth. Now, in terms of going, I am far from certain that he'll either be in the final running for the job, nor that the move would be beneficial to him (and presumably Fowler too). Let's look at it, we're 14 points ahead, Ross has never won silverware as a manager, do you think he's going to walk away from that? When we are back up in the premier he'll have even more pull in terms of teams and then maybe I'd be worried. Then there is his recent acquisition of players and the chat used to get them. For him to turn around and move on would seem to go against his character. All this hasn't even touched on the Barnsley situation, which while commanding a larger budget and better stadia is a club that has gone through 5 managers in 5 seasons and are fighting a relegation battle with the likes of Birmingham, Sunderland and Hull. Far bigger teams with far greater resources. Not saying it can't be done, but it's a bit of a "hospital pass". This is before you spot the other linked managers like Monk or McCarthy who, you'd feel, would be far better suited to a lower league English relegation dogfight. So... in short? I don't think he'll go, and there are lots of reasons to think that, but even if he did, we're 14 points clear in a league where United are currently shitting the bed and the rest of the contenders are squabbling amongst themselves. Even Tommy Craig would get this lot over the line from here (heh, just!) -

Got to be honest, his passion is quite surprising. He's a professional who has played at a higher level and obviously has a strong connection to the club, and that club to him is in the wrong league, so there is no surprise that he genuinely wants us to make a real fist of not just promotion but beyond - but even then his determination seems really strong and it's not just a personal determination but a team one. -

Yeah, all this big league stuff is too much for me. I'll be back next season. Plus, it seems Dougie here has "whooshed" himself. -

You've got a history of brining in high profile players, maybe Caulker isn't in the same realms as Caniggia and the like, but for Scottish football he's a fairly "big name". You should expect me to also say, "you've got a history of financial problems too", that's meant as an observation rather than a dig. -

Like most I'm a little surprised at Caulker signing, sure he's not the player he was but one would suggest he's got more in him than the lower reaches of the Premiership. That said, I saw on the BBC that he struggles with depression, gambling and alcohol addiction so perhaps that's why he's available. -

I'm glad to see Stewart making an impact. I believe there is a decent player under his "youthful gangliness". Would he, or kirkpatrick be ready for the top division next season.... I'm not sure. To be fair to both, mind, it's not like they've had a long run in the team. -

Some might suggest a link and a summary rather than copying and pasting the whole article without any obvious source would have sufficed.
