Utterly baffled as to why England delayed taking the new ball. That should be debated more than the early declaration imo. As it turned out with the weather the only reason the match didn't end in an almost certain draw was down to the declaration.

Root might not be the greatest bowler ever, but he has the knack of getting big game changing wickets.

And that's what makes it all the more bizarre. They've said there will be a minimum of 67 overs available, God knows how they work that out when the whole morning and a bit of the afternoon was lost.

The one thing I always find astounding is the hard and fast finish on the preset time rules. Day 3 was obviously a near washout and they played an extra half hour last night to make up some of the shortfall. I can never quite get my head around losing overs in the height of summer when they can comfortably play on past 6.30. Think 6 overs were lost on day 1, and a few on day 2 as well.

Yep, to me it smacked of "look at us, look how maverick we are". I could have sort of understood it if they were down to 2 tail enders, and it might have been worth the gamble if they had got a wicket or two before the close. Root was still there though and looking in great nick, could easily have added another 50 almost single handed.

Aussies set 281 to win. Moeen's ability to bowl and how effective he can be with a sore finger could play a big part in the outcome.
