  1. I think China needs the relationship of supply of goods to the West more than their relationship with Russia.
That's my hope, China appear to be playing the whole shitshow fairly well at the moment. Hopefully it continues. Christ, who would have thought two weeks ago that we would be relying on China to avoid WW3
  2. Agree it needs de-escalated but which country/region do you see doing that? Russia and the West are far too entrenched now to ever back down.

Honestly think the only way this is resolved is by the Russians overthrowing Putin from within although by all accounts that's not going to happen any time soom

  3. Surely there is no need to offer this, as you would imagine the majority of sanctions will be rolled back almost as soon as the conflict ends?
Not sure about that. Unless there is a regime change and an about face by either Russia or the West then I think this is the reality for the foreseeable future. We've literally seen the return of the cold war, in the space of two weeks, which will take years/decades to unravel. Putin is now toxic and none of the major western government's will want to be seen to be making any kind of deals with him
  4. How the hell does Putin get out of this without resorting to desperate measures? I'll admit that a few days ago I was fairly confident that the conflict would be confined to Ukraine but there seems to be an escalation of sanctions and provision of weapons to Ukraine that I never saw coming.

  5. You're probably right
    But it's beyond ludicrous
It's like saying britain were involved in the Spanish civil war due to the international brigade
This whole war is ludicrous tbh bud. All it would take would be for one of these 'mercenaries' to be captured and paraded in front of the Russian media for Putin to then claim NATO/the West had boots on the ground
  6. You honestly need to simmer down a wee bit.
I get that you're anxious about it but this level of fatalism when it comes to all out nuclear Armageddon is honestly just a bit misplaced.
You'll still be here in 5 years time lamenting St. Johnstone being stuck in the championship, don't worry about that.
Pretty much this. Don't get me wrong, I am concerned but we've been threatened with nuclear annihilation for most of our lifetime. I was a kid growing up in the early 80's. As a child growing up I was convinced that every time an aircraft passed overhead it was a cruise missile. I blame my parents for letting me watch Threads!!!

Ukraine is shafted in regards to being a country but the rest of the world will keep spinning
  7. Don't know if this has already been mentioned, on the 2nd March Swedish air defence radar had been following 4 aircraft that took of from Kaliningrad, they took an unusual course to Gotland and the Swedish Airforce were scrambled.
i take it both Sweden and Finland are now being openly threatened by Putin if they choose to join NATO. Both countries can do what they want without permission from Putin and from what I gather Russia would regret messing with either of them.

I would think this happens on a fairly regular basis. It's a similar situation to the Russian bombers which occasionally skirt our own air space
  8. I was talking to somebody who knows quite a lot about military theory and they were saying that much of the Russian battleplan up until now seems to be too bad to ring true...they're making elementary mistakes that you'd learn not to do in your first week at somewhere like Sandhurst.
Thinking is that possibily either the military are deliberately making a baws of it in order to weaken Putin's position, or else Putin has personally conceived a grand invasion plan which they knew was amateurish and they're carrying it out to the letter knowing it would fail and weaken him.

The whole thing is bizarre tbh. I mean, where's the air force gone? Apparently there's over 300 aircraft at the borders but almost all of them have remained grounded. The tactics on the ground up to now appears to be a shambles, moral is shit, army units are communicating over crappy walkie talkies, and machinery and equipment is falling apart. Starting to think the Russian military might be a bit shit
  9. "Trent Telenko on Twitter: "This is a thread that will explain the implied poor Russian Army truck maintenance practices based on this photo of a Pantsir-S1 wheeled gun-missile system's right rear pair of tires below & the operational implications during the Ukrainian mud season.[emoji3468] 1/ https://t.co/LmxW43v6gy" / Twitter"

Might partly explain the reason why the convoy is breaking down and not straying off road
  10. China already backtracking on their support, condemning any invasion of a sovereign territory to the UN General Assembly.
I wonder if this might cool China's interest in Taiwan, for the time being at least. Admittedly I know next to f**k all about that dispute but the reaction to the Ukraine invasion couldn't have gone unnoticed by the Chinese
  11. I think that’s a bit unfair though. The West have limited options tbh, they can’t break conventions by sending in armies or they end up fulfilling Putin’s security war stories.
Arming the Ukraine and applying sanctions are the strongest measures, but they take a bit of time before Russia start to feel the bite of sanctions at least. It’s only been a couple of days. I think the sanctions threat, coupled by the Ukrainian resistance is getting to Putin, hence his threats about using nukes today.
At every step Putin is the one starting and escalating things, always acting in bad faith. The West are probably acting much as expected tbh, he knew there would be assistance and sanctions. He lies about his real reasons for the war and when he meets resistance, raises the threats. We aren’t really poking the bear, we are trying to subdue it.
I've actually been surprised at how unified the EU and NATO have been in response to the invasion. The EU in particular have been very quick in there response which isn't something they're known for. The EU and NATO have also been pretty bullish with there rhetoric which, again, comes as a bit of a surprise
  12. As I understand it they just don’t create the same heat as a gas boiler.  Therefore the water flowing through your radiators is nowhere near as warm.  In order to properly heat the home you have to have significantly larger radiators in your rooms.  Not a major problem if you have the space but a consideration nevertheless.
Yeah, you're right. The best heat source is actually under floor heating for heat pumps although that can be impractical/expensive if you're not already installing it in a new build
