  1. If you're talking about the two ends behind the goals specifically, they didn't really have names. There was the Tote Board end and the Brigton end The original Shawfield Park had open terracing all the way round until it was redeveloped in 1936 having been bought over by the GRA (spearheaded by then Clyde chairman McMahon...that's a whole other story !), so the Tote Board was part of the redevelopment to accommodate the greyhound racing. The shed was the area to the side of the pitch, most usually stood just to the left of the halfway line slightly towards the Tote Board. At least that's what I'd tell you if I was old enough to remember..............
  2. Agree with others that when players move on as they always do, then so do we. As for Grant specifically, not so sure it's to do with money. Both him & McStay were good players for us, but for whatever reason, always got the impression that while they enjoyed playing, really they had other career ambitions. If it's true RG is going to Stirling Uni, then it kind of makes sense. Goes to Alloa with his father as manager, gets a full time wage for money in the bank, but probably didn't enjoy last season as they'd be constantly looking to grind out results and playing in a way that didn't suit his style. Whereas Albion are local, he can play in a way he enjoys, get a bit of money and pursue what he wants to do without the pressure of possibly battling at the wrong end of the table. Just my take on it. Players are all different. Rory McAllister made it clear for years he didn't want to go full time because he had a good job he enjoyed, so football was really his favourite pass time. That could also easily have been Pat Nevin. He'd been released by Celtic as a kid, was pursuing a Uni course, playing football with us for fun, but the move to Chelsea was the turning point as it convinced him it could actually be a viable career. Anyway hopefully we get a few in who have the drive in them, whether a little experience still with the passion or younger fellas looking to possibly advance in football. Just need to wait & see. Is it time for a 2021 / 2022 thread yet ? This farcical season's thankfully over !
  3. Rumsby wasn't 4th choice CB, McNiff was. The partnership was usually a mix of Rumsby / Lang / Howie. Even in the promotion season, McNiff was filling in at left back. It's not his preferred position granted, but playing there, pace was a real problem & we saw that again in the most recent Falkirk game when he came on for Otoo. McNiff has been a great servant to the club but I agreed it was time for thanks & good luck for the future. Irrespective of individuals, that's the barebones of a squad now. There will need to be quite a few signings, hopefully not the majority being loanees though a couple of the right quality is fine. Basic premise that if you let players go it's because you're going to bring in better and that'll equate to money. So it'll be interesting to see if the budget is increased and who we're able to get in for what will be quite a few different positions
  4. He's not offside, the camera angles are deceptive. If you watch the coverage from the main stand, at the point the ball is crossed the defender closest to the keeper plays him on The penalty's extremely soft. Just before the ball gets crossed the East Fife lad makes a run & Rumsby reaches out and touches his arm / shoulder but doesn't pull him back. By the time the ball arrives, he's decided he's felt a touch, he's going down & Rumsby trips over him In any case, the better team on the night won
  5. He's not offside for the very reasons you're saying. Someone's forgotten about the 'cuts the ball back' bit.......
  6. Jesus, that's a dangerous mix alright. Tread carefully with that one !
  7. Just out of interest, why are they looking to relocate again ? Are they restricted in building more stands on that land or something ? Do you know who the new owners are, their background etc ? Have they a historic link with the club or the area ?
  8. Not so sure. Granted he'll have made mistakes, all players do. A CB partnership takes a little time to develop an understanding. First he was a 'foil' for Lang a couple seasons back, then was developing that with Howie. Problem being it's chopped and changed a lot, but I think over the piece he's done a decent job. No afraid to put his head where it hurts, and you need that. But like any position if we can get better options then fine, but I wouldn't be so quick to show SR the door.
  9. Not sure about an entire root & branch clear out but there's some areas need prioritized. First of all assume all loanees return to their clubs. In defence I still think the Rumsby / Howie partnership has done well, but we need another good option as further back up. The left back position needs addressing and has done for a long time. Midfield, need 2 or 3 good quality additions, but the lads who played there last night are still very useful over a season IMHO. Up front, Cunningham and Goody will score goals, but again need at least one further quality option to have. So it's maybe more a case of replacing the majority of the loanees with quality signings in the right positions, and perhaps a couple of loanees to complete it. I'd certainly take Jamieson and Otoo back, just depends on their parent clubs. So I agree it might be time to say thanks & good luck to a limited number, but a lot of our squad aren't signed on fully anyway, and a decent amount still have a fair bit to offer if they get the right kind of "additionals" around them.
  10. Interesting reading the Sons fans' comments. From the outside looking in, the style under Duffy is a hard watch, not one I associate with Dumbarton over the years. It gives the impression that your board's main aim, maybe based on resources, was staying in L1 at all costs. Be well organized, hard to beat and grind out survival by any means necessary. Does that sound about right ? Up until now it's worked and may still do in the playoffs, wouldn't be surprised if it did. But what's the thinking for the future ? Reading something about a new investor who's taken a look at your club & thought that from what he's seen, you could go full time. Presumably the sense of "potential" takes on board having a stadium with one stand and a fan base of several hundred. Will this individual be looking to invest from the outset and increase the budget for players immediately ? On the face of it none of this seems to really add up, but am I missing something here? Good luck in the playoffs anyway. Nothing against the other teams but you'll at least bring something resembling an away support.
  11. Not sure who I'd say was the best players, but would say overall I think the standard of L1 has been pretty poor this year. Not only L1, from what I've seen of the Championship broadcast on a Friday night, that's probably the worst I've ever seen for that level. Maybe the lack of fans has played a part, but it ain't been great. Obviously writing in some leeway for our division more recently with the ridiculous amount of games the teams have had to play in a small period of time, & I hope all the chairmen have enjoyed the little extra PPV shekels they've earned from these additional 4 games that caused that schedule. As for tonight, Howie missing is a bit of a concern. Would like to see Cunningham played in closer to Goodwillie because he's shown he can take a chance & is kind of wasted played too far wide, maybe have Jamieson's energy ready to come off the bench later. Otherwise it's straightforward, we must win, that makes it relatively simple. All the players have put in one helluva shift over the last month or so, one last big effort and I'm sure they can get us over the line, they've certainly got the ability.
  12. Good win for us obviously, but wouldn't take anything for granted just yet. That Peterhead score today's a warning. Dumbarton are at home on Tuesday and will be going all out for the win, they'll not be playing for a draw. Can see them getting something. Unless Dumbarton lose, we'll likely need to approach the East Fife game like a must win as I can't see us playing for a draw & it working somehow. But that's a top effort from our lads given two bad defeats, players missing & general fatigue. Hopefully a few extra days' rest will ultimately help us get over the line.
  13. Seem to remember something about that. But that statement is dated before the league resumed. Once the clubs knew the cards they were dealt, there's absolutely no way they should have continued with the idea of the extra 4 games, and so just playing out the 18 would have factored in a little extra time. Instead, people who'd be out of breath tying their shoelaces put their own players through the ringer for the sake of a little extra PPV. It's impossible for them to argue the extra 4 games had anything to do with sporting integrity. In fact quite the opposite, in Clyde & a few others' cases who had more games to catch up on it got to the stage the players were out on their legs at the first whistle, not the final one. That's got nothing to do with ability and by that time had just become a complete farce......which the suits wanted you to pay at least a tenner to watch As for last night's carry on.....JRG, come out come out wherever you are......
  14. Couldn't agree more. Start off with 27 games, so right there they can't argue that would represent "fairness", depends who you get h&a twice Then, whether in lieu of season book or "virtual walk up", we've basically been asked to pay clubs to watch what amount to Youtube videos...I don't think they understand a lower league audience. How many people honestly missed the football over January & February ? Subsequently reduced to 18 games. OK, seems fair. But nah, our wonderful clubs have decided to squeeze every last penny out their supporters & get them to watch 4 more Youtube videos after that. To compound that, the league intervenes demanding they be finished by certain dates, with little explanation why, meaning all the players, most part time, are put into the ridiculous position of playing a game every 2 or 3 days which will continue over the extra 4 games. Meanwhile the silence from the Players' Union is deafening in relation to any consideration for players' welfare. So then we come to last night. The club's statement was minimal & technically correct, but in the context of the situation pretty dreadful. The best understanding of PR is gained through vocational training, if learned at a college course, this is what happens. But we'll cut the kid some slack & put it down to lack of experience. The first thing that needs to happen here is the JRG issue a full explanation why that game was deemed playable by them, and which members of the JRG made that decision for full transparency. It's understandable why there's a lot of speculation and assumptions because there's been absolutely no clarification. It was always a possibility for part time teams something like this could happen, and my own guess is that Clyde probably haven't breached protocol. However, neither team should suffer for this. Common sense would suggest a week on Thursday would be the target to play the game, subject to the Clyde players still testing negative....and you wonder what the Forfar players are making of this due to play us tomorrow. Could easily be both clubs could come to an agreement to play, but of course that's subject to the pen pushers at the League not turning round and saying "computer says no". This season has just highlighted, as if we needed reminding, that the people who run our game are fucking idiots
  15. It absolutely depends on funds, that's the point. So we free up wages by releasing players but the objective presumably is to attract better players than already there & have a size of squad that covers a season. How's that to be achieved, where's all the money coming from when apparently we're in debt & the club have little or no idea how to generate much outwith drawing water from the same well year on year ?
  16. Been interesting reading the comments over the past while. Let's say we manage to stay in L1. It appears to be the opinion of quite a few that we need a huge clear out. There's going to be a fair clear out anyway when all the loanees return to their parent clubs and Tom Lang joins Raith. So you're left with X number of players. Presumably the suggestion then is we need to replace many of them with better players. OK, so who is going to source all these players & more to the point, how are we going to fund that because all we ever hear about is the dire financial state we're in, can't earn money from the stadium or this, that & the next thing, & there generally appears to be no overall game plan other than getting out the begging bowls to supporters every summer. In fact some people suggest that the only solution is to leave Broadwood, buy land & build a stadium when we can't even afford a left back. So explain it to us all, how are you going to square that circle ? Is the idea that we are just to convert to in effect becoming a development platform for everyone else's youth players, and if that's the case, do you think you even have a club ?
  17. From the sounds of it we got off lightly with 2-0, but also going by reports the young lads put out there today worked their socks off, so maybe earned that little bit of luck with the scoreline. Good luck to Saints in the next round, hope you give whichever version of that vermin you get a good tanking. There's a lot wrong with our club so doubt we'll be darkening your door again anytime soon.
  18. Tired looking performance from us today & no wonder, had to expect it'd catch up eventually. Despite that still nearly nicked a point in the end, but can't really complain about the result. Other results went our way and we've now the near luxury of 3 whole days before having to play again.
  19. Looking at our fixture list, at a guess I reckon if we manage to beat Forfar tonight we'll go to Falkirk then Firhill with a formation looking to grind out draws, keeping some players back for the remaining two matches against Dumbarton and Forfar.
  20. Can't see that either, was a theory suggested by someone else. PPV on the other hand, different story. Whatever it is, they couldn't feasibly argue it's in the interests of sport, an attempt to make the league "fairer". If anything, it's the other way round. Survival of the fittest, literally.
  21. It might change with Aberdeen's move away out to Kingswells and how successful they are or not ! Not entirely sure they've thought that through and taking folk who decide to go to a game relatively last minute into account. As for tonight, I suppose with the situation we're in we have to view the home games as "must wins" and just look to grind out whatever we can in the away games and hope by the end of it all we're in a decent position. Just don't know how long the players can sustain the energy levels, even with rotation, of another two weeks playing a game every two days or so. Absolutely unbelievable that this schedule was agreed by the clubs to accommodate another 4 games which have no obvious reason other than to either avoid season ticket refunds or more likely, squeeze some more Pay Per View income.
  22. If there's a cup shock today & Cove go out, this becomes a huge game for both sides, the winner earning effectively a bye into the semis given the shower o shite that would be waiting for them next Can see us cruising this, a couple of Rab Reilly free kicks curling high past 3 foot George Tulloch.
  23. Aye the Wee Mill. Long gone, the new road to the motorway runs right through it now. It was the clubs themselves who decided all this, afaik the 'powers that be' only insisted all clubs could fulfill the first 18 to be allowed to play these extra 4 games.
  24. Whatever the reason for the 4 extra games they certainly can't argue it's got anything to do with sporting integrity or 'fairness'. Could be as you're saying to do with season ticket refunds or even just a case of squeezing as much pay per view pounds out as they think they can get away with Wouldn't be surprised if a memo was sent downstairs reminding Danny that yet again we're financially Donald Ducked, so if he could see his way clear & put out as strong a side as possible as we really need that 20k now. But would have to think it'll be a weakened side, few full time clubs could sustain that schedule let alone part time
  25. I'm sure the Ayr lads have a fair idea of our situation, but to put in context. Instead of all our clubs deciding under the circumstances that completing 18 games would be enough, each team playing each other home and away once, they decided to put what are in the vast majority of cases part time players through the most ridiculous fixture schedule ever specifically so they could then play another 4 games each, the purpose for which absolutely nobody knows. To the point that if something truly bizarre happened today and we beat Ayr, most of our support would likely be, and it seems incredible to say this, 'disappointed' because it adds yet another game into the mix. When you've got to that stage you know the game's fucked.
