Football, politics and religion shouldn't have anything to do with each other.

I can't understand those who try to mix them, or introduce one into a discussion about the other.

This isn't really a sensible position to hold, but there is a politics forum on the general nonsense thread, so I don't want to get too into it.

Football and religion are largely about social identity and community, with the belief developed secondarily (in religion, not fitba). They're also very similar in terms of symbolism and purpose of ritual, so it's no coincidence that they should be bedfellows. Celtic, for example,  were founded by clergy as a charity concern to support the poor Irish (who were all catholic) and are an expression of Glasgow's Irish catholic community. It is also an expression of faith in action, which is where religion meets politics.

Religion and politics should absolutely mix. Jesus was, amongst other things, a political activist. Martin Luther King was another man whose religion informed his politics.

    Did that today

Did you regard it as a meg or just playing it through his legs?

I personally only regard it as a meg when I collect the ball at the other side. Unless you did a wee fancy through the keeper's legs, then it's absolutely a meg.

  3. National identity is an individual thing, and you don't necessarily have to pick one. Ask anyone who has parents from different places and was born in a country native to neither parents, it's a complex question.

If young Dembele doesn't feel Scottish, and doesn't wholly identify as Scottish, then it's not for us to say whether he is or not.

Ethnic nationalism might motivate someone to deny a young black man's right to self identity, just so you know.

  4. The rage against Tierney is a wee bit off for me. He has been quite vocal about his pride in playing for his country. Using his love of Celtic as a stick to beat him with is strange. I personally hope that he leaves Celtic and tests himself in Serie A, but that would be what I would do if I were him. He may want to be a one club man. That's his choice.

I don't think his performances have been bad for Scotland. He was bold in attack against Slovakia (and should have won a penalty) and has been excellent in other games.

As has been stated above, the opprobrium has been aimed at the club, but a lot of it has been spiteful shite aimed at Tierney, with inferences that he somehow is snubbing Scotland.

So your answer to "when have they ever done this" was "they're about to".

Talking of outliers, have a look at a team whose main clubs don't play in their own national league. Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham have played for virtually their entire histories in English football. Bale is a product of Southampton's youth system (not knocking that, necessarily) and clubs like Cardiff and Swansea got the money to develop the likes of Ramsey from the TV money given to English league clubs.

They now have the money to put into a national development centre because of the money they get from qualifying. The welsh FA haven't invested a lot in their game and haven't needed to. Their big brothers next door have done the spadework for them.

All of that is entirely what any new manager would say, surely?

Not exactly. Previous managers have been very non-committal regarding the fate of retired players, or even of players who have called off. In fact, other previous managers have avoided the subject or obfuscated it with what amounts to a "we'll see". Clarke has stated an intention. This has actually been rare of late.

Regarding the games in June. Other managers have sought to dampen expectation. Clarke seems to be taking charge. He has a vision. He wants to take Scotland to a major finals. He presents as a man confident in his own ability. Burley presented as weak and a bit terrified. Levein was insecure bluster. Strachan, if I remember correctly, was confident and did his usual bobbing and weaving with the media. I still think Strachan is unfairly maligned given some of the performances (Ireland at home, the Poland games and the Germany games) were excellent.

Clarke saying that "we have to start picking up points and the June games are crucial" tells me that he thinks he can send a team out to get something. Other managers would have said "the game against Cyprus is crucial" and would have skipped over the Belgium game, talking about their quality etc. I could be projecting a bit and we'll see what he says nearer the time, but we haven't had a world class coach in charge for, arguably, decades.

  7. Sir Steve on the BBC saying he won't chase down retired players, but will leave the door open for them to "un-retire" themselves. He will also have a chat with players who may have pulled out of squads "a little too easily" and will tell them of his vision for Scotland and the direction he wants to take.

He only wants players who are "100% committed to Scotland".

He reckons we have "slipped up" and that we need to start putting points on the board. "The two games in June are crucial".

It doesn't sound like he's treating Belgium as a free hit either.

I like the sound of this man already.

Got a perfect 6km Cycle path at the side of a road I drive along every day and, without fail, I’m still always held up by some p***k who has chosen to ignore the purpose build path. Fills me with obscene amount of rage but apart from that I shouldn’t have any reasons to dislike cyclists, especially considering I occasionally enjoy going on a cycle.

I do have sympathies with this. Some cycle lanes are utter shite and seem to be made for riders with robust tyres. If you're on a racing bike some of them are a bit bumpy or, in the case of the A77 route, strewn with debris.  I've been known to just use the road because of this.  Some of the cycle paths are also pretty circuitous, or are just pedestrian paths "repurposed" to also include cyclists. These rip my knitting.

Obviously if none of these apply to the above example then said rider needs telt.

  9. Sigh.

Just popped into the thread, but I imagine it's full of yer da types moaning that cyclists don't pay for roads (roads are paid for through general taxation, so my IT, VAT and other wee taxes do the job), are somehow a danger on the roads (despite being responsible for half a road death per year) and otherwise moaning that they have to share "their" roads with the non-polluting healthy b*****ds.

And regarding the jumping red lights. I happily get going before the greenie mainly to get in advance of the cars. It's a safety thing. It actually does everyone a favour as I'm not delaying anyone while straining to accelerate into a headwind with four panniers of shopping.

Motoring is dying out. Get it up youse.

    Thank you.

  10. Cracking thread this. I look forward to reading "Rewilding Scotland" so thanks for the tips.

Also, I'm less pissed off with gamekeepers than I am with the landowners who employ them. It's like being annoyed at polis for particular laws. They're just the servants of the rich.

I'm glad someone mentioned bees and wasps. I like the idea of Lynx, Wolves and Bears, but the bees are far more important.

    Sevco transfer speculation.

Rangers are on the trail of £13million-rated Croatia star striker Mirko Maric.

The Ibrox club have scouted the on-form NK Osijek striker regularly in recent months.

Maric – who still has three years left on his current deal – has 16 goals and is the domestic top scorer in his homeland

Does this mean that Morelos is away? It seems like a risky amount of money to lay out otherwise.
