Viktoria Plzeň lose again, they won't be caught at the top though. Frustrating day for Zbrojovka at home to Karviná yesterday, hit the bar twice and were all over them - 0-0. Playing Slavia Prague next week so no chance of points there I'd say. After that away at Slovácko for the South Moravian derby.

    Pretty tight down there...

Slavia conceding a last min goal to Zlin wouldn't have helped.  The next game I make it to will be the last game of the season with Plzen. I had one eye on that being a potential title head to head but I think tonights result killed any hope of that.

My mates stag weekend is in Prague later this year, anyone got any stag recommendations, particularly for guys who are a bit too old for all this nonsense, ie me?

There is a sports bar a bit out the city centre that is not stag do friendly, Id recommend that if you are there without a bunch of arseholes all wearing banter tshirts and a groom in a Borat mankini

  3. Slavia are currently in a distant second to Pilzen after going on an unbeaten run lasting a year, they had a fairly consistent first half of the season, only losing twice. However,  Pilzen winning 14 games in a row from the start of the season meant that the league looked almost won before the winter shutdown.

Slavia invested in a lot of experienced players for European football that turned out to be duds, They lost Jiri Pavlenka to Werder Bremen and replaced him with the calamitous  former Fulham keeper Jan Lastuvka. Most of these players have now gone and the core of last seasons team are now pulling Slavia back in to the title race.

Since the re-start, Slavia have three wins and a defeat with Pilzen only achieving two draws reducing the lead to seven points although Pilzen have a game in hand.

Sparta have struggled further this year and are currently outside of the European places.

  4. Prague 2 and Prague 8 are within walking distance of the centrum and have a lot of decent bars, there are probably half a dozen Irish bars also that will show football and the staff will all speak English but the beer will cost more. The Dubliner and Rockys are the two main ones and will be busy but there is also O'Ches

Most places tend to show major football and hockey games though, restaurants and cafes will rig up tellys , especially during the Ice Hockey world cup.

Dukla are a reformed club as well, and their stadium only comprises one stand, albeit an absolutely huge one. As much as there's a romance for the side because of Half Man Half Biscuit, they're pretty much an under-supported irrelevance.

Not making the trip to Prague tomorrow, but Slavia vs Zbrojovka is a stick-on home win as Brno have been outrageously poor this season, with the exception of an outstanding home performance to beat Sparta 2-0 three or four matchdays ago.

Glad I saw this thread as I forgot all about it! I really should update it, particularly as I have my season ticket this year, but life/PhDing has got in the way.

Slavia have been on a Celtic type unbeaten run but it is draws that are killing them this year, Skoda has been injured quite a bit and the players brought in for the European games have been mostly poor or injured. Losing Pavlenka to Werder Bremen and having a calamitous replacement in Lastuvka hasn't helped either. I'd say either a draw or a narrow 1-0 home win.

hmmm - disappointing - just settling down for kick off on a splendid stream for the Prague derby - Dukla v Sparta - and was hoping for the archetypal wholly mental east european fare of rioting fans, flares, armed police, helicopters, marauding elephants and suchlike; seems, however, to be a tawdry affair in a half-full, shitty stadium which started off with an extended floral presentation ceremony - I presume Slavia v Sparta is more likely to provide amusing scenes...

Sparta v Dukla would probably be the equivalent of  Rangers v  Partick in Czech football, there is a bit more dig in the Bohemians v Slavia matches but the real rivalry in Czech football is Slavia v Sparta

Apart from being able to pronounce Czech hockey players names correctly, my Czech isn't great, whats the story behind this? Protesting the board?

Yes, they were relegated last season and are pretty much a yo-yo club between the top and second flight.

How easy is it to get Slavia tickets?

Unless it is a European game it won't sell out if thats what you mean? you can get tickets right up to kick-off from the ticket windows under the east stand (the end furthest from the tram stop) Some of the folk at the windows will speak English but you might want to go early in case you need to perform a game of charades to get tickets and don't want to do it in front of a crowd of impatient punters.

  9. Probably the easiest way to explain is, If you get a 22 tram from IP Pavlova, it will take you past Bohemians ground and get off at Koh-I-Noor, takes about 20 min, all depends on where you are and where you are staying, there are other trams go that way But that one is fairly central, you should be able to get a ticket at the gate/ticket office for it.

I was a season ticket holder at Slavia for a few years, The atmosphere at the games can be pretty good.

There is another thread in the travel forum called Krakow v Prague that has a few decent suggestions

This weird building is not too far from Charles Bridge. I might be getting it confused with another building nearby, but they had a great Communism museum (temporary) and there were nice views from the cafe at the top.

  11. If Harkins wasn't on such a massive wage I wouldn't have been bothered if he had stayed, Being player of the year for a mid-table premier team to being an unused sub in the league below tells you why I'm not bothered he has gone either.

If you get the Harkins that was at Partick and Dundee, you have some player, however, if you have the player who was at St Mirren, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Oldham, Grimsby, Blackpool, Bury or Huddersfield then you would be as well punting him at Xmas, you get a few decent touches, some flashy turns, a lot of hands on hips and puffing cheeks out looking bored/pissed off.

Capture.thumb.PNG.ca046f0c339c6ea98c2be3fb158eb679.PNGSlavia Praha ended 8 years without a league win by clinching the title on the last day by finishing 2 points clear over Viktoria Pilzen, with Sparta finishing a distant third, they had to play their last home game of the season at the Stadion Evzena Rosickeho, an Athletics stadium, due to Depeche Mode and Rammstein concerts this week.
