  1. Oh come on. There is a wall and some trees. That rules out a lot of places.
  2. I suggest you read Spillover by David Quammen. It suggests that most virologists work on the principle that 10% of the population are immune to whatever. For example 10% of the population can be exposed to HIV and never get it. You will never know if you are in that10% but nonetheless none of these things will ever kill everyone. .. and on that happy note
  3. Ben Fogle wrote a book called "The Teatime Islands" which was a travelogue of the remnants of the British Empire. Places like the Falklands, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena, Ascension and Gibraltar. Not as good as the similar book "The Last Pink Bits" by Raith Rovers fan Harry Ritchie. Simon Winchester also wrote a similar book called "Outposts". Don't know what team he supports.
  4. It does not keep me awake either. However look at America. For all the criticism they get they do make a thing about the government being their government. The White House is open to the general public, as is the Congress building, the Pentagon and the FBI. Yes there are restrictions but at the same time it indicates who they serve. By contrast the British state was historically for the benefit of the monarchy first and foremost and the general public had no claim to anything. Maybe less so now but not a great starting point.
  5. Also we are not citizens. We are British subjects. The government is not our government - it is Her Majesty's government. The navy, the air force, the mail service. Nothing to do with us. Royal this, royal that and so on. Give you some idea where we all fit in.
  6. Similarly Led Zeppelin spelt their name to the way it is to make it obviously to Americans how to pronounce it. Also that it is pun on lead balloon as opposed to a zeppelin that is out in front.
  7. Made into a film starring Jude Law and Ed Harris but I presume you already know that.
  8. In an office environment there are often people working an 8 hour day who don't have 8 hours work to do. Attention is paid to people who arrive 5 minutes late or leave 5 minutes early. The easy solution is to pad out the work to ensure you always look busy.
  9. The obvious difference is that if Labour were to offer a financial rescue package similar to this government then they would be attacked for it. "Same old Labour. Spending other people's money. Who's going to pay for it." They would also be attacked for the lack of PPE for NHS staff. Also for not acting quickly enough to halt the spread of this disease. Not that I am suggesting any bias in the media.
  10. I find electric easier. For example barre chords as well as hammer ons and pull offs. It can be discouraging not being able to do these things. Also. What sort of music does he wanted to play as opposed to what do you want to hear. I know plenty of people who got an accoustic to play some mellow serenade but actually their son wanted to play AC/DC. "Here comes the sun" by George Harrison can be played on an electric and sounds just fine without the need for loudness or distortion that people associate with electric.
  11. Norton AntiVirus 2003 will be out of date so she need an update if she expects it to work. (Curious sense of deja vu here).
  12. At the start of one of their films it says "Based on the story Dancing Men by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle". If so it is real blink and you'll miss it. Enjoyable all the same. I assume you know about "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" which includes Loch Ness.
  13. Don't be silly. You are getting your Sci fi films all mixed up. Nuclear pollution doesn't cause aliens. That's nonsense. Giant insects the size of houses maybe but not aliens. Ridiculous.
  14. You seem to have a real gripe about people who are not employed by someone else. I have been self-employed for years. It's wonderful not having some unpleasant idiot telling me what to do. Other people feel the same and run their own business. In some cases they employ others to work alongside them. Often it is a case of chasing the work to keep things going for the next three months then three months after that and so on. Maybe six months. Maybe a year. There is no big money pot. No massive reserve. I am doing okay but other businesses have seen their work dry up completely. In some cases the summer months earn the big money to keep them going for the rest of the year. Not all small businesses are ruthless tyrants.
  15. Sorry to hear about all this. I wonder if solving the first issue will solve the rest. After all there are plenty of women who also want a kid and their clock is ticking too. I don't know what work you do. Does it undermine your self confidence? Do the people you work with undermine your confidence? Do you only ever apply for jobs that are guaranteed to disappoint? I know someone in that situation. Worked in a call centre and hated every minute of it. Then he got a break. Went to a job with a one year contract working with good people and he got paid more too. He felt like an imposter and expected he would be found out but then he realised he was perfectly capable of doing the job. Shortly after that he was married and started a family. Not sure any of this relevant but happy to help.
  16. Danger of complacency there. Their death rate could easily double.
  17. If that is how you feel then don't expect me to give any car advice!
  18. ITV believe in them because they are cheap to record and repeats are even cheaper. In America it is even worse. They show repeats that are more than 30 years. "On tonight show, the winner can take home a brand new 1984 Ford Mustang".
  19. He is simply pointing out that this virus doesn't seem to understand the concept of "deference". How outrageous. What a cheek. Why can't it go and infect unimportant people instead? .. or something like that.
  20. Actually it is in Turkmenistan and used to be called Krasnovodsk. HTH
  21. What if he is singing "At the Edge" by Stiff Little Fingers?
  22. Especially when there is not a TV camera anywhere near by. Otherwise all bets are off.
