The amount of spots open in the champions' path is a bit rubbish and certainly makes it harder to qualify for the group stage. Out of the countries mentioned Greece have a decent chance to have 2 teams in the group stage, with PAOK drawing 1-1 away to Benfica last night (and AEK playing Videoton tonight). Having looked at the coefficient table, I don't see any reason why Scotland can't finish 20th this season. It might not make much of an immediate difference, but it's a step in the right direction.

Most likely the latter scenario as there would probably be more wins involved overall. The points for winning/drawing in the CL and EL are the same as far as I'm aware. It all depends on how many wins/draws it would take to finish 2nd though.

I don't see us finishing higher than 22nd this season, which wouldn't be bad. Our cup winner would be guaranteed entry into the 2nd round of EL qualifying. Also, if Celtic manage a draw in the group stage then we've mitigated the points we'll lose from the 13/14 season.

If a sitter meant a missed chance then the word 'missed' would be entirely unnecessary in the phrase "missed a sitter". Wiktionary defines it as "a very easy scoring chance". I agree that it's pretty uncommon to hear/use unless someone misses an easy chance though.
