I'd say the lower picture there, of the English cup final, is an unusually good action shot for 1905, it's easy to imagine being there. I mean compare it with the picture of the Third Lanark team, which isn't even an action shot but it looks like it could have been taken in 1880.

But what really shows that the past is a foreign country, is the fact that the Newcastle keeper is wearing the same strip as his team mates. Until right now I would never have guessed that that lasted into the 20th century, but googling reveals that it was only his cap which showed that he was the keeper. I am astounded!

Copied the English picture from Wikipedia page about that Final. Here is a film of a Preston North End v Aston Villa game in 1905 where you can  only tell the keeper by their cap. The PNE goalie is probably Peter McBride who was from Ayr and played played over 400 games for PNE between 1896 and 1912. He also played 6 times for Scotland.

  4. CUP FINAL RESULTS

All the scores are in and we have three winners and one Final heading for extra time and hopefully no penalty kicks. All finals were extremely close contests, especially the drawn one. Have to say the Rupe’s Cup result comes across like something that would have graced the pages of the NOTW.

  5. Third Lanark won the Scottish Cup for the second and last time on this day in 1905. They had won the League the season before. They defeated the original Rangers 3-1 in a replay (att: 30,000) after drawing 0-0 (att: 54,000) a week earlier. On the same day at the old Crystal Palace Aston Villa won the FA Cup for the fourth time defeating Newcastle United 2-0 (att: 101,117). Villa didn’t have any Scottish players but their manager/secretary was Glasgow born George Ramsay who played for them from 1876-1882 and managed them from 1886-1926. Under him Villa won the FA Cup 6 times and were losing finalists twice.. They also won the League six times and finished runners-up six times with a league and cup double in 1896/97. Newcastle United also had a Scottish manager, Edinburgh born Frank Watt plus six Scottish players in the Cup Final, Jimmy Lawrence (GK), Andy McCombie (RB), Alex Gardner (RH), Andy Aitken (CH), Peter McWilliam (LH) and James Howie (IR). Have just assumed the positions they played from the line-up in Wikipedia. Watt was manager/secretary from 1995-1930 winning the FA Cup twice and the League four times.

This might be a daft question ; if the cans get crushed, why don't you crush them yourself and save about 5 box spaces in your car?!

Beer cans and soft drink cans go to different end recyclers supposedly and it’s harder to identify what’s what if crushed.

Didn't go in the end. Bit gutted as missed a bit of a classic. Would have been nice to have been there and laugh at Rudan.

Only saw the last 15 minutes and what a way to get it right up Rudan. Good that only the Mariners or Phoenix can finish premiers. Always good to see Victory lose and an almost last minute makes it better.
