Crammed in behind the goals, need to get to the railings or you wont see, they should have gave that full sideline to Talbot and could still have entered and exited at the cemetery end, theres no way Darvel will fill their section.

It's all part of the John Gall/Darvel get-it-right-up-the-Talbot mindset.

In which case one says GIRU them Talbot! Quick first goals puts us back in it.

    Mon the Talbot!

Abbey Vale are 4th this season with no chance of promotion. A completely competent team at their existing level - not one that has reached a 'bottleneck' from progressing at all.

They've haven't lost out on shipping 200 goals in a single Lowland League season, just because a handful of pyramid anoraks insist that All Champions Must Be Promoted.

Anoraks are nothing to do with it. It's basic, sporting common sense that dictates that any team finishing top of their league and that league is part of a pyramid should expect to gain promotion to the next rung of that pyramid. Not sure what isn't making sense in that.

Repeating myself; it's not about individual clubs, it's about the pyramid system.

If there were 2 leagues below there should be 2 promotion places. 3 I'll grant makes it awkward but 1 out of 3 is not a pyramid. If there were 4 leagues below then you can justifiably have only 2 spots available.

Surely we all want to see a fluid system, my original post was not about trying to get WOS by into the LL, but about the integrity of the pyramid with regard to promotion/relegation and licensing.

You keep saying that. It would be fair to say that won't be the case if you're one of the 42 clubs, especially Stranraer/Bonnyrigg/Clyde at the moment.

  4. 5 minutes ago, virginton said:

No it isn't, because literally none of the clubs taking part have been denied promotion on a regular basis.

What sort of bottleneck allows Bonnyrigg, Bo'ness, Tranent and Linlithgow all to sail through to a higher level without a problem? Have St Cuthbert's Wanderers been cruelly denied their right to err, stinking the place out and conceding 200 goals in one season at a higher level?

The system is a bottleneck, the reality has been different for the reasons you have listed. Any pyramid where licensed champions don't automatically get promotion is flawed. The play offs which exist to get into the LL and to get into Scottish League Two are an embarrassment. Add to that the fact that Club 42 don't go straight through the trapdoor and its a minter for the "Scottish Football Pyramid"

  5. 4 minutes ago, virginton said:

None of these points are relevant to your claim that there's a bottleneck in the current system preventing clubs from progressing on merit through the (LL path) pyramid.

There categorically isn't a bottleneck affecting EoS teams from progressing.

There categorically isn't one affecting the SoS either.

So rather than being a 'pyramid' problem, it is in fact a minor issue for one particular, recently-formed league. And one that wouldn't actually be solved by your clamouring for automatic promotion for all league champions anyway.

The fact that there are three clubs (potentially) taking part in a play off for one promotion spot is the very definition of bottleneck.

    Why are you mentioning Clydebank?

If Beith for example are working towards their licence but because of circumstances it's going to take a few years to sort the issues.  In that time they win the league because they are a good team.  They could potentially "block" access to the play-off for a number of years whilst navigating the licence process (which isn't open at the moment either).  Replace Beith with, for example, St.Cadocs or Gartcairn.

It's not a radical concept to then go to the next eligible club to take part, it happens elsewhere.

    In the name of fun.

I'm saying "random draw" there because that's how the 3-way Play-off is conducted to determine the home field advantage and order of the ties.

And you're the one complaining about a team getting a free hit at promotion, while advocating for team(s) getting a free hit at promotion.

    1 hour ago, Shanner said:

saying random repeatedly does not make it so. You're also predicating your argument on me being a fan of the current playoff and promotion set ups; I'm not, and those are a separate issue to this.

If my team won the league in the WOS I'd very much regard it as a cracking stroke of luck if they were allowed to bypass the minefield of a game against a decent quality EOS opponent (in any format). I say luck, but it would actually be tinged with a bit of professional embarrassment at having dodged a bullet that other teams before didn't.

He's right mate. You can't talk about professional embarrassment then advocate finishing 2nd in your league yet going up just because you have the right boxes ticked or more resources than the club who finishes ahead of you.

I, for one am against this notion of promoting the highest placed licensed club! Or as it should more commonly be known, the "Make sure Clydebank get up even though they're not good enough" rule

A diabolical liberty! Second penalty to make it 3-3 was particularly ludicrous.

Aye it was a bad one. The midges had a better game than the spaghetti-armed Thorniewood keeper as well.

Are you in the video Sarge? I looked for someone with a can of diet coke to no avail.

  9. 7 hours ago, Burnieman said:

I have to agree that the rules should change to highest placed licenced club within the top 3 positions.

So for example Beith win the league, it goes to second, and then third to find a licenced club for the play-off.  If there are none, then no play-off participant.

Should have been that from day one really to remove "blockers" from the equation. It can't be any more unfair than a club finding themselves in the fortunate position of auto promotion to the LL due to no licenced Champion in the other two leagues and therefore no play-off at all.  A fortune of circumstance/timing.

You'd hope that eventually the rule would become redundant anyway as more clubs become licenced.

in what way does this actually undermine anything? whst are you saying is devalued?

Nobody's saying they should face a random team - it's the highest-placed team satisfying all the criteria for promotion. Giving the East teams a free hit at promotion against an SOS side as we currently do is a bit farcical in itself as they're benefiting from the WOS winners lack of a bit of paper as you put it.

There's nothing fortunate or free hit like about winning your league and getting promoted. You almost sound like you're happy with a play off.

I wouldn’t ever just check one car rental company.

Try in no particular order Rentalcars, Holiday Autos, Carjet, Kayak, Expedia and Skyscanner. Carjet has been the cheapest for UK rentals recently.

Keep an eye on limited mileage with rentals and costs for additions such as additional drivers if relevant.

Would also recommend spending a few quid on insurance to cover the excess which can be significant with most hire companies - never buy the additional insurance from the hire co - and do go over the car with a fine tooth comb when picking it up and get every blemish logged however small - with many hire co’s running quite old cars that have been hard used don’t assume they are blemish free.

the only thing I'd say is you need to be careful with third party booking sites, especially in peak season. Companies will give priority to people booking directly through their website to the point where if they have no cars you will have to wait until there are.

Also, worth checking Arnold Clark rental (I know). Their prices fluctuate but can sometimes be good in comparison even to agents. Only thing is that they have a surcharge if it's out of hours.

Scottish Cup no longer has replays as of like two or three seasons ago. Only national cup that sill has replays in the Amateur Cup which ironically is the least equipped to get replays done midweek.

Even the big Scottish? That's what I was referring to. I thought they were still replayed but if I'm mistaken, sorry.

There's zero chance of an SJFA league sitting at Tier 5 ... zero. The only issue at point here is the Junior Cup. It obviously still gets a number of people excited and in current context - 1200 and 1400 ish crowds are decent ( although in truth I expected the Beechwood crowd to be a lot higher and the photos look busy but ... ) . I don't think it's my business to tell other people what can float their boat. I do have a right to be concerned about what the Junior Cup does to the league.

If the SJFA were serious about a Junior legacy then they could get on their bikes and go round trying to persuade all the "non-league" leagues and teams that a national cup was in their interest and attractive. If it was an all-in and replaced the North and South Cups then maybe we'd avoid a situation where a Junior Cup -  is given precedence over league, where teams - less than a month from drop dead end date of league still have games to be scheduled. I see some games have started to be moved around and others pencilled in - but part of the problem is the disruption caused by the Junior Cup. Talbot could easily have played Darvel on the Tues / Weds last week but because of the free week nonsense it's still to be scheduled. It's not that of course but we have a situation where we're sitting in middle of a 4 week idle period with 2 games left and we have others with 7 or 8 games to go. It's not a good way to be finishing what has been a great league campaign and one that is effectively ruling Talbot out the race. Which is a shame as it would be nice to have someone in the play off

Yep. The SJC is a great old tournament but you're right, it shouldn't get in the way of the business end of the league season like it has. It's unfair on everyone in the league, regardless of whether they opt in to the SJC or not. It really is an anomaly which needs sorted.

I would say yes, I'll be honest I dont know if league games are postponed to accomodate rescheduled Big Scottish games.

    But they shouldn't.

Replays are normally midweek affairs where possible IIRC. Having cup weekends in the schedule makes sense so not sure where you're getting the idea that league should always take priority..
