  1. To be fair it is four wins and twelve points. Not that astonishing really.
  2. He lived in Kinpurnie. Rd Ralston Paisley, near my grandparents back in the day. Ive seen him a few times around Paisley and he has been at hospitality at the Rock.
  3. Jumpers for goalposts, a lift over the turnstile and a clip round the ear and a mind how you go from the local bobby. Chips at a penny a bag and a bucket of herring down the quay for a tanner. The fitba' was, notwithstanding what you've said, not very good down Bogheid way.
  4. Have you watched the film? Admittedly it is only just over a minute but I can only repeat that based on that, the standard appears way below what you'd expect from a Scottish cup quarter final.
  5. Here's the Dumbarton V Raith link http://www.movietone.com/N_POPUP_Player.cfm?action=playVideo&assetno=103824 You need the Microsoft plugin 'Silverlight' to view it. The actual fitba looks truly dire tbh.
  6. The ball kicking style is similar too. That's because a leather football in those days had the mass and weight properties of a pumpkin.
  7. Yup, I've seen the Hibs footage on one of Colin Liddel's old VHS videos. It was in colour and from the 40s. More accessible is the footage from the Dumbarton v Raith Rovers tie in March 1957 which housed Bogheid's biggest crowd. You may have to download a piece of software to view but it's here http://www.movietone.com I can't post the direct link from my iPad for some reason but if you go to that site and search for Dumbarton Raith Rovers, with Scottish Cup in the qualifying box. If you have any bother it is story number 69941.
  8. Check out this film made in 1938, featuring Sir Iain Colquhoun of Luss as Mr Cholmondley Warner. At six minutes there is an equaly fascinating and hilarious clip of Queens Park Captain Jack Gardner followed by the Queens players training. There is also a short clip of a match at Muirton Saints v QP. http://movingimage.nls.uk/film/0231
  9. It's a bit like denying the history of the place. It's been a castle for about 1700 years. Dumbarton has had a football club since 1872 - Do we just identify it by the current stadium and team?
  10. Tell him too that the castle was there rather a long time before the 18th century. As for being the only former champions to have not graced the 'SPL' , I don't recall Third Lanark ever being close!
  11. It does read as if he's a recent convert. A kind of beginners' guide and as such, not too bad. Another one though, who is under the impression that the SPL still exists under that name. Not as bad as almost all the Radio Scotland presenters who don't realise that the SPFL is not just the top division.
  12. Not a style icon? I'll have you know that I am currently wearing a Simon shirt, Loon pants and a pair of beetle crushers. When you consider that this is dress down day at the Millburn that perhaps puts my credentials in proper perspective.
  13. Ok, yes that was a great season, however, just as in 2009 with Cowden's collapse, it required us to take points to overtake them. The response from Sons support when we missed promotion by one point in that Fairley season was pretty much that we had spawned third place ( a play off spot these days). Anyhoo, as I said, Livi have only three games and we have four. Even if we take nothing from our games, Livi need a win and two draws minimum. It could happen but it's highly unlikely.
  14. Do you maybe mean Cowden in 2009? Whatever, Livi have three to play and need five points from the three, assuming we get no points from our four games. It's not impossible and I'm not taking anything for granted. However it would be unlikely.
  15. We are five points behind St Mirren (whom we have beaten twice and have yet to play at home) and Queen of the South (whom we beat last night) with a game in hand over both ( v Hibs whom we have beaten twice and who are in meltdown). We have also to play Raith, who in addition to two draws have only beaten us once (1-0) this season and Alloa, whom we have beaten convincingly in our last two games against them. We are five points ahead of Livi who have to play QoS away and Rangers and Raith at home. Even if we don't win another point, Livi would have to win one and draw two of these games to move above us -on goal difference. If we get one more point from our remaining four games, Livi would then have to win two of their games at least. Why aren't we looking up instead of down?
  16. Nice guy. I've bumped into him at a couple of Cash and Carry outlets. My daughter said 'Dad is that Steve Aitken?'
  17. Apropos of not much and this isn't an April fool. However, I wonder if any of you know the guy who owns the smaller of the two general stores at the Bellsmyre shops? Apart from a height advantage of a couple of inches, he's a dead ringer for Steve Aitken.
  18. This wasn't a bad one mind you - hauled from the archives. I can't remember the opposition but I think it was East Fife. Not a bad goal for a centre half!
  19. Wullie Gibson's free kick v Hibs wasn't too shabby. I agree with the post above about Albert Craig's goal to equalise against Clyde and send us to the Premier was my most memorable one though perhaps not the best. The half time score was, I think 2-0 to Clyde. At 1-2 the Clyde fans were singing 'It's my party and I'll cry if I want to' just as Albert's shot hit the net at the Turnberry End. Even having been a veteran of the 71-72 second division championship win, Boghead v Arbroath and Forthbank in the 90s, QP at the Rock in 2002 and Annan then Airdrie, I don't think any of them matched the feeling of getting to the Premier.
  20. If I remember correctly, Sons did eventually realise a decent sum on the players. McCahill went to Celtic for a reported £100k and Moore went to Hearts for a reported £50k . Stuart McIver spent most of his career at Sons but I think we got a fee from Clyde of around £10k when he left.
  21. I was in London at the time and even the English papers carried the story.
