Great coachstrip! Is it any coincidence that the withdrawal of this artform coincided with the demise of Scottish football? Just think of all the wee boys all over Scotland reading this excitedly before hurrying off to find a brick wall to practice these skills against, then trying them out in a wee game of three a sides (including a lassie who couldnie play but made up the numbers and was good at recovering the ball from the adjacent pitch).
If only we still had target men who could lay the ball off for their mates breaking from midfield, who could control a ball with the inside of the foot and who could effectively head the ball downwards with the front of the forehead! Take a bow messrs. Gilfeather and Thomson and of course, dirty baldy Drew, this is coaching golddust!
The Henry McLeish report pinpointed many reasons for the decline in quality of our national game but crucially failed to mention the withdrawal of coachstrips. The solution to our current problems is therefore blindingly obvious - scrap the performance schools and bring back coachstrips!
