  1. I think it’s also very much a generational thing. My parents (also regular Kirk attendees) are gripping by all the coverage and watching most of it. I asked my youngest son (15) if it was discussed by his friends at school and he said ‘not really’ they were more interested in the fact that they are getting Monday off school and see royalty as an outdated irrelevance. I used to be somewhere in between the two, but am becoming increasingly republican in my own outlook. I also think the reason that many lined the route last week was more a sense of witnessing a bit of history. We have never seen a Monarch die in Scotland in almost 400 years and probably never will again.
  2. I joined the QE2 in July 1990. A few weeks after joining HRH walked through the area I worked in with the Captain on their way to a lunch celebrating the 150 anniversary of Cunard. It is the closest that I have been to her and was part of an amazing period in my life when in a few months had seen my club win the Scottish Cup, the team I followed while living in London reach the FA cup final and going to Italy to see Scotland in the World Cup. The life on the ship was also like a 24 hour party. Would I describe it as being the highlight? I think my wife might have words to say about that and being present at the birth of my son’s certain tops anything else. If meeting the Monarch has been the highlight of your life then I would seriously question if you actually have one.
  3. Yes it’s a pretty poor show from St Mirren having a strip that from a distance looks similar to Celtics 3rd Kit. surely a big fine incoming for the Saints!
  4. The only result Liz ever looked out for was Dunfermline back in the 70s.
  5. We got searched going into the North West today when we went in at 2.30 and it looked like they were frisking most of the fans. I thought Falkirk were by far the better side in the first half but felt that the draw was probably more or less a fair result. I had a feeling a minute’s silence would never work and don’t know why they didn’t do a minute’s applause instead. At least we didn’t have to sing GSTK like the English teams are doing.
  6. Would Utd fans have sung that song if they had been playing any other team today?
  7. Just out of interest how did any minute’s silence go at other grounds. I was at East End and quite a few in the North West near myself were booing during it.
  8. With all the people who want to queue up to see the box with a flag in London, would it not have been better to do what was done to William Wallace and they could then have had 4 or more separate boxes with flags around the UK to allow many smaller queues.
  9. I might just follow Denis Laws example from 1966 and spend most of Monday on the golf course.
  10. I wonder if Rob Brydon has been in to see the coffin. If I was him I would be very tempted to do my ‘man stuck in a box’ impression.
  11. On a serious note I totally agree with you. Any time of the year it’s nice to see who arrives on our feeders though any squirrels can be quickly chased off by our wee terrier.
  12. You have to remember that for some people feeding the birds can be very therapeutic for them. A wise sage once wrote; I feed the pigeons, I sometimes feed the sparrows too It gives me a sense of enormous well-being (Parklife) And then I'm happy for the rest of the day Safe in the knowledge there will always be A bit of my heart devoted to it (all together now for the chorus) All the people So many people And they all go hand-in-hand Hand-in-hand through their parklife!
  13. I sincerely hope they don’t. GSTQ/K as we well know is also used by the English FA national team as they struggle to differentiate between the UK and England. I will be holding up a blank placard in protest if it’s played at East End on Saturday. I have no problem with a minute’s silence, black arm bands and flags at half mast. But as an atheist republican I draw the line somewhere,
  14. Does that take into account the lady that went through 7 times!
  15. It must be pretty s**** though, you wait years to get the job you have been promised all your life only to find out they don’t give you any compassionate leave for a close family bereavement!
  16. It has shown Scotland off very well on a World stage and I think we can all feel very proud of how our nation has handled it. Now the body has been transferred south expect to see new levels of craziness in the next few days.
  17. If you think it’s been a bit crazy up to now then it is going to crank up a few levels once the body is down south. it’s going to make what was going on in Edinburgh seem very reserved!
  18. The right of responsible access to our countryside (have you tried walking in the countryside down south!) Smoking ban in pubs before it came in down in England removal of bridge tolls free prescriptions free bus travel for my younger sons. Holyrood isn’t perfect but it has affected my life in far more positive ways than Westminster has.
  19. I bet they are now wishing they had put the coffin in The Castle now. It would have all been downhill.
  20. Out of respect I would observe a minute’s silence before the game but there is no way GSTK will be getting sung!
  21. It would have to be Bayern Munich at Pittodrie in 83. My dad had been taking me to Dons games since the late 70s, but living in Fife it was mainly away games that we went to. I remember listening to the game on tranny with my Dad. We did go up for the 5-1 win in the semifinal but I don’t think the drama of those 2 goals in a minute will ever be repeated at Pittodrie. Scotland would have to be 67 or 77 at Wembley Seeing my hometown side win the cup in 61 or 68 or any of the big European nights at East End in the 60s would have been special but unfortunately was before I was born.
  22. I had driven down overnight to West Sussex to visit my in-laws with my wife and kids. I had gone for a nap and thought that I was having a very vivid dream until I realised that it was the TV news on downstairs. I then remember a total shock as the news unfolded. I had previously worked on the QE2 and the twin towers had been a major landmark when we sailed into New York and held many memories. A few days later I was up in London with my father in law at the football and watching planes flying towards the London airports seemed rather creepy after the images on the News a few days before.
  23. Thanks, it sums up how I feel. My views are probably republican but I have no I’ll feeling towards Her Majesty or anyone who is grieving at the moment. I just don’t feel any need personally to join in with the grieving and just want to be able to get on with my life.
  24. My Dad supported Aberdeen and dragged me along to games in the late 70s when I was a nipper. Little did I know what was about to happen. I then moved to the smoke in 87 and happened to live in Wimbledon. I went to see them for a while (Wembley 88) but they weren’t the team for me and I ended up following Palace(Wembley 90).
