Losing Vaulks was massive, I can't even remember if we sold him or his contract was up. If it was the former, I wish the board had gambled and kept him till the end of his contract. The league is so poor this season, with Will we probably would of been right up there.

We sold him. Had we not done so he would have been free to sign a PCA with someone else five months afterwards.

While only the player will know the difference between his Rotherham salary and Falkirk one, you could perhaps guesstimate that over the course of a season, the difference would have been around a quarter of a million pounds.

If your employer denied you the chance to earn that kind of money, how much effort would you really give them? 50% of what you gave before maybe? 60%?

That's all speculation of course. Though given that we rejected bids for Alan Gow in the last year of his contract and he was invisible after signing a PCA with Rangers, you can understand why we let him go. I think Gow was actually the last player we kept at the club when he wanted to be elsewhere and at the time I thought it was obvious that he wasn't trying a leg for us.

I've watched a few U20s games, I think Sheps does well at that level BUT he's more often than not up against young boys not much bigger than he is.

As seen from his cameo appearances in the first team & when he's in/around the box he's more often than not eased off the ball or they simply go through him like he isn't there.

I can understand why Houstie plays him on the wing as a sub but his impact is minimal. I can think of an assist last year at Raith but nothing from this year, although could be wrong.

Two assists last year, depending on how you define assist. He had the one against Raith and also puts the cross in against Hibs which a defender headed to Leahy to score the thunderbolt that brought us back to 2-2. Before Sir Bob stepped up to consign them to another season of First Division football. :thumsup2

One assist this year, also against Raith. He played a cross back to the centre of the box for Lee to head into the net.

I'd like Shepherd to get a couple of starts to give him the opportunity to impress before we released him.

I believe Houston said at the AGM that Shepherd would be offered a new contract.

It may not be long before we hear about extensions, as this time last year we'd announced extensions for Blues, O Hara & Eadie. Offers had made to Leahy (and Alston) and Baird was announced as having signed his extension in the middle of January.

    ITK AF.

Not really. The "Vaulks will be signing for Barnsley" line was posted the day after the story broke. It was also put up midway through the second half of the match at Stirling, after everyone had already noticed he was missing.

The part about the pitch being "fooked" is nonsense. Wind up attempt methinks.

As soon as posted I thought, yeah, dare say there's bound to be one recently. Missed that game; obviously dribbling down the chair in the old folks home. But before that one then?

To be honest, I don't think that our third last goal from a corner really matters now.

What matters is that the last one came against the filthy, diving, cheating cloggers of Hibernian FC. :thumsup2

Cheers mate. That was as far as I had got so far, so emailed them asking about getting one in SS but no word so far

The South Stand is sponsored by Street Lighting Supplies and I think all the stairwells already have their branding attached.

Whether the club would open the South Stand up to individual fans remains to be seen. I imagine businesses pay far more than we would, but I think they only get a deal for a year whereas if a fan sponsors a step in the main stand they get it for life.

You may get an official answer on Friday. The lady in the Commercial Official who deals with steps is snowed under at the moment and is going to try and spend some time working on step sponsorship tomorrow. I imagine it's going to be quite popular in the runup to Christmas.

There maybe a chance Gallagher has been pulled out u19 to feature on Saturday, like he was last time for his first start

He was given his first start against a lower league side though. Houston seems to be very cautious about throwing young players in so I can't see him making his first league start in an away match at Tannadice.

  8. 3 hours ago, MrDust said:

I Thot he'd only had a 45 and 70 odd mins under his belt.

Sounds like he maybe in contention for Saturday depending on what goes on tonight, training and how Grant feels himself.

He got 45 against Hamilton and I think 70 against Killie, though I missed that game so I'm not certain. It was definitely 90 last week. Tonight was his fourth game back after injury.

  9. 3 hours ago, RC55 FFC said:

Although I notice Gallagher isn't in tonight's squad. Could he be getting a start on Sat in one of the full back slots?

I strongly suspect Gallacher will start at the weekend, maybe along with O' Hara. They'll be playing in Andorra though.

Both are away with Scotland Under 19s. Games tomorrow, Thursday and Sunday.

Do try and keep up, old chap. :P

  10. 3 hours ago, MrDust said:

I'd guess its a slowly slowly approach to get Grant back in..... I'd expect he has to get 90 mins in with the development team afore he is considered for starting.

He already got 90 minutes in last Monday at Airdrie. If he does that again tonight then he would probably be in contention for a starting place at Tannadice.

Nope. It becomes an issue when there's players 5 minutes away who are pish and players further afield who could be better.

Apart from his first season when he brought in dross like Boulding, Tudur-Jones and Morgan, Houston doesn't make seem to make many pish signings.

Most of them are solid. If you look at this season's recruitment as an example, nobody could say that Rankin, Henderson, Kidd, Austin, Craigen, Gasparotto & Rogers are pish. All have shown signs of being useful acquisitions, even if they haven't yet done it consistently.

I don't think you could call the likes of Kerr, Miller, Baird or McHugh inspired, but by f**k have they all given us orgasmic moments of magic in the last two years.

Houston may go for "safe" signings who can do a job but surely that's better than pulling in exciting unknowns from further afield such as Rakish Bingham, Olu Durojaiye, Rhys Bennett, Mehdi Khalis or Andy Haworth.

The ginger god doesn't appear to be a gambler. Instead he's taking the safe and boring option, but in my opinion it's paying off for him. As multiple victories over "bigger" clubs over the last few years demonstrates.

    In Houston I trust.

Perhaps the wrong way of looking at it, but why are we not offering contracts to players who end up with the Championship leaders down south?

I must admit that I was surprised when I saw that Huddersfield has signed him. I saw every game he played for the Under 20s last season - maybe about 7 or 8 - plus a couple when he played for Forth Valley. He was alright and he certainly didn't look out of place as a 15-year old in the 20s. However, the three players who we did offer pro contracts to were all technically better than him. At least in my inexpert opinion, though I presume the coaching staff felt the same way. I would even go so far as to say that there was a fourth player who I would have given a contract to ahead of him, who was also released.

I guess trying to turn schoolboys into professional footballers who'll earn a living from the game is always a gamble. Even at a club like ours, where we have a track record of bringing kids through, the majority still won't make it.

I can't think of any youth players we've released in recent years who've gone on to play at a higher level than Falkirk. I think Leigh Griffiths may have been one. Whether Cameron Taylor will follow in his footsteps remains to be seen. Signing for Huddersfield Under-18s gives him a chance.

    Good luck to the lad.

Just seen we've sold a lad to Huddersfield, maybe that will free up some wonga to bring in another player. Probably not but.

He was a schoolboy at Forth Valley Academy and although he got a few games for the Under 20s he wasn't one of the ones who was offered a professional contract. So his departure from the Academy didn't free up any money.

I doubt very much you'd have the same opinion if say, Alan Stubbs told everyone at a fans meeting what a Falkirk player was making.

It wouldn't bother me personally. It's not my wages. (though I'm retired now anyway 8))

Once the genie is out the bottle, it's gone.

The onus is on players, their agents, and their "ITK" friends who post on messageboards to keep schtum. If they don't then they can have no complaints when the information ends up somewhere they don't want it to go.

Which is why I don't think the reveal is a valid reason to attack our manager.

Fill yer boots though. I'm sure you will anyway. :P

Lets say PH does know, do you think he should be blabbing at a fans meeting? Looks like he's making excuses already.

If Houston knows, then it's probably open knowledge in the football community. The money that the "other guy" gets is a hot topic in any occupation, never mind one like football, where there are massive variances across different clubs.

Why shouldn't he share that with supporters if it helps him make a point?

No trying to be a smartarse or anything here, but how do you know?

I only ask as I see occasionally some stuff posted on here and wonder if its people who are within the club and genuinely know this stuff?

There are people who post on here who have, shall we say, an association with certain players. Which is why if a trialist appears in a U20 game he often gets named either on here or social media.

The problem is that so much shite gets posted it can be difficulty to separate the accurate from the asinine.

Shepherd should've been released, he's never going to make it and is clearly not part of Houston's plans.

Why would we release someone who's under contract? You'ld almost certainly have to pay him his full salary to get him to leave unless he waived his right to it. I wouldn't.

Better to keep him as part of the squad where he may be needed. He was needed last year, when we recalled him from his loan at Brechin, and he set up two goals. One of them gave us three points instead of one at Raith Rovers and without it we wouldn't have finished second. The other goal set us on our way to beat Hibs in that glorious "GIRFUY Stubbs" night in May. 8)

He may yet have a contribution to make. As for that matter may our much-maligned captain.

If we have to pay them, keep them at the club and let's see what they can do for us.

That is a lot of assists over one season between the full team, I make that 59 before you get to the 2 assist players and down?

I'm a sad so-and-so and have an interest in Falkirk stats. Every time we score a goal I review it on FTV to see which Falkirk players was the last one to touch it before it was knocked into the net, assuming the touch was intentional. For example, if Alston wins a penalty from which Baird scored, I class that as an assist for Alston. We scored 84 goals last year and I calculated 83 of them as assists. These figures are purely for my own amusement and have nothing to do with official stats, if such a thing exists for this. And yes, Smith did have 6 assists. For example:-

25/7/15 East Fife Smith cut the ball back from the byeline for Baird to lash it high into the net.

18/8/15 Peterhead Smith put in a cross from which Cooper headed past the keeper.

22/8/15 Livingston Smith cut the ball back from the byeline for Vaulks to score.

28/8/15 Dumbarton Smith put in the cross which the defender miskicked to Alston, who scored.

12/9/15 St Mirren Smith crossed to the back post for Leahy to loop a header over the keeper

12/9/15 St Mirren Smith cut the ball back from the byeline for Baird to sidefoot into the net.

Can't find the stats for assists, but last season Alston scored 10 in the league and Vaulks got 6. I'm not convinced Craigen and Rankine will make the same contribution, so it's up to other players to step up or we're in for a tough season.

By my reckoning, Vaulks had 12 assists and Alston had 10. They were the two most prolific chance-creators in our team, along with Sibbs who also had 10. Muirhead & Baird had 8 and then on 6 were Smith, Miller & Leahy. Nobody else created more than 2, with the exception of McHugh on 3.

This is bonus money and should be reinvested in full on a couple of players to excite the fans not ones at the tail end of their career or raw youngsters. Problem is a lot of the options are now signed up but that's the problem with selling players once the season has started.

Unfortunately the club don't have any control over when bids come in and the one that took Vaulks away wasn't on the table before the season began.

As for raw youngsters, Vaulks was 19 when he arrived. The same age that Liam Henderson is now. We have no way of knowing whether he'll turn out just as good as his former teammate. And despite what has been posted previously on this thread, Henderson was signed for the first team and not the U20s. Is it possible we already have the replacement for Vaulks on our books, with Rankin a short-term stopgap until the younger player gets up to speed?

I don't know. I do know that during the 36 years I've been watching Falkirk, our best players have either been ones at the "tail end of their career or raw youngsters". (Stainrod, Latapy, McAllister, Kerr etc). That's the market we traditionally operate in. It hasn't stopped us being reasonably successful.

And on a slightly different note, I wouldn't rule out some of the U20 midfielders coming through in the near future. I watch them every week and I was very impressed by what I saw of (Scotland Youth International) Reis Peggie last season. Cameron Blues may not be far away either.

  21. 3 minutes ago, Shadwell Dog said:

Look m8 unlike our board I'd like to see us get out of this league in the near future. We'll never do that if we keep selling our best players and not reinvesting the cash in some quality players.  You may be happy at losing players like vaulks and replacing them with the usual journeymen and that's your prerogative but I'm not and that's mine. Yes players move on but we need to reinvest the cash in the team now that we no longer have money issues.

Money is being reinvested though. Many of our current squad have signed new contracts in the last couple of years and it's a reasonable assumption that their wages will increase each time we do that.  I'm pretty sure it was announced that we paid transfer fees for a couple of the recent acquisitions too. When was the last time we did that? Alan Gow?
