oh, blast from the past but John Fleck. It was really weird (Scottish Wayne Rooney puff pieces coming out in the press in exchange for DELICIOUS LAMB) but any time I saw him for Rangers he looked nowhere near ready for first team football.

Hasn't had an Islam Feruz-tier debacle of a career since then at least, but I never got why he was so hyped up.

For a more controversial shout here as Fleck never really made it at Rangers, but Stylian Petrov would be my pick. Good player but the media made him out to be world class, and he never really looked like a stand out for Celtic on the odd occasion I saw them on the telly. Fondest memory is Beyemistic on here trolling over him years ago (pound for pound the best midfielder in the world etc.)

I genuinely cannot remember or name any Petrov goal, apart from a long range one which was when he went to Aston Villa I think and the keeper was off his line. Probably about to find out he banged in a 35-yarder against Thistle I don't know about but I will stand by the point.

Petrov used to look like Maradona against us.  A top class player imo.

From recent times, definitely Scott McKenna who I have never seen have a single good game.   Getting the fee Aberdeen did seems like it should be a criminal offence.

    Delicious.

Seeing this a lot tbh. "Never seen him play but *insert players name here* is obviously better"

Hes a 1 in 3 goalscorer in the Championship who's apparently rapid, its surely not hard to see why Clarke has called him up after, presumably, watching him a few times this year.

He's a 1 in 8 goalscorer in his championship career.  And he's not even 1 in 3 this season.

I'm making no claims on his ability, cause if I've ever seen him play I'd be surprised

Not to be cynical or anything but the Jacob Brown call-up confuses me. Admittedly I've never heard of him or seen him play before but he will have to be 'exceptionally good' to justify a call up to the Scotland squad. What harm could bringing a genuine u21 Scotland striker into the first team have done? Brown's goal-scoring record isn't exactly anything to be excited about. I'd have had Tony Watt called up instead.

The u21 forwards aren't good enough for the u21s

  4. 97/98  Our first trophy in 36 years, but the whole season, bar a disappointing league Cup defeat, was a joy.  Played fantastic football, Cameron, Fulton and McCann were dynamic and deadly from midfield and genuinely thought we were going to win the league after the draw at Celtic Park.

    85/86.

I know, I know.  But watching a team who had been a fixture in the first division in the early 80s go 30 games unbeaten and win at Ibrox, Parkhead, Pittodrie, Tannadice and Easter Road with Robbo and Colquhoun at their peak was incredible.  The end was obviously brutal, but the journey was amazing.

    05/06.

Much more mixed feelings on this season, it felt like a missed opportunity and there's a what might have been aspect but the first 3 months was unbelievable.  The cup run, bar the final, was also great with the semi-final being an all time classic.

    11/12

Entirely for the cup run.  Almost everything else was garbage, though there were good wins here and there.  The off field was a disaster as well but you'll never top the end.

    87/88

It tailed off and there was a very Hearts in the 80s disastrous finish in the Scottish Cup semi, but for most of this season we played some fantastic attacking football and were scoring for fun.  A run of dull draws ended what had been a good tilt at the title, but finishing above Souness's Rangers was a great achievement

I don't think it would be difficult to put together a side that could win the league, I'm of an age that has seen non-OF teams win it (and, hilariously, one failed Hearts near miss), the problem is not the players.

The problem is you are fighting a duopoly, and both of them benefit greatly from the media and the officials.

When Aberdeen and United won the league, they had players who were better than what Celtic and Rangers had.

Its also apples and large Hadron colliders comparison the two eras.   Budgets were much closer than they are now, if you had a good player he was basically a prisoner if you didn't want to sell him prior to Bosman and the OF were shopping in the same  market as everyone else, cause there were restrictions on movement between country.

And nearly every team in the league had at least a couple of players who could easily have played for Celtic or Rangers.

I'm also chuckling at the idea that the officials now are more of a problem than they were then

Boyce would not stroll in to the Aberdeen team ahead of Ramirez.

Souttar, Baningime and Gordon were the only players that looked like they'd threaten our line up on Saturday.

We played shite on Saturday by all accounts.  I imagine Dundee fans wouldn't have fancied too many Aberdeen players after your game.

I think you'd struggle to put a team together that you'd fancy to win the league from the ten.  There's players in other teams that would improve Hearts, but not by an amount that would transform our team dramatically.

Tavernier was on loan at Gateshead and Carlisle at his age, pretty much the same as playing for Pollok to be kind about Gateshead

Josh Doig is a completely different player and miles ahead off Tavernier for his age

And Tavernier was hitting those figures at his age either that has been only a part of his game he developed a lot later

You seem to think I'm the one who compared him to Tavernier.

Doig, imo, is an alright full back for 19.   I am baffled when there's talk of big transfer fees because I see nothing in his game to justify them, and some pretty glaring weaknesses which playing at a higher level would expose quickly.

No issue with him being in the 21s.  Would be ridiculous to see him in the full squad.

Games moved on its more about getting up a creating at left back but I'm sure his defending will improve over the years like Tavernier last year at Rangers and last few seasons over all

Tavernier still isn't a great defender but his upside is massive.

If Doig was getting double figures for goals and assists a season it would be a different conversation  but since he doesn't I'll look at the fact he constantly gets caught out with high balls to the back post and his positioning seems really poor.

  9. Hickey in the 21s is purely going to be to try and improve their results.  He'll learn absolutely nowt at that level from either the coaches or players he's with/up against.

And that's fine.  If Tierney isn't fit though, get him straight in the full squad unless there's still folk out there who think Josh Doig is a better player

Don’t think he had the best of games, subbed after 75 odd minutes

But to be fair Napoli are a very good team who are undefeated in the league so far

He played pretty well tbh. 100% pass success, was the most fouled player on the pitch and basically had Lozano nullified.

They lost 2 penalties and a pearler from 25 yards, none of which he could have done anything about
