  1. The 4-1-3-2 is a massive gamble of a formation. It requires you to create more than you will likely concede once the press is broken, and requires a huge amount of discipline in the press.

No doubt not having a settled defence is an issue, I honestly am not sure Millen prevents the equaliser but I'm sure a settled back 4 having played a number of games together make s better go of the corner.

Yet the biggest issue today for me was that we didnt create enough up front. Hamilton won a bunch of headers but Vaughan -in possibly his worst game in a Rovers shirt- did little to hold the 2nd ball or do much useful with it.

Likewise, on the left, Easton has been off form for about three weeks now and does look a bit leggy.

I'm not convinced this is due to IM playing favourites or - In @TxRover's shite use of language on the other thread being "IM's pets" but that they still show up in training well, and both can still create something out of nothing.

Didnt happen today. I would have had Gullan and Smith on far earlier and would have kept the same shape.

We've been chopping and changing shape and personnel so much that you could argue folk are playing while fairly leggy when in a more settled, or less injury ravaged squad, you could cycle guys out a bit more naturally. Murray was arguably slow to change and predictable when he did so. Yet, we did have plenty of the ball in that final spell but lacked the quality for once to do something with it.

Murray didn't get much right today but has got plenty right in other games so far.

A title challenge was probably never on To be honest, we've swashbuckled our way into a decent position but United will easily slog it out to the title. We need to get a couple of bodies back fit and playing, and Murray needs to maybe be a bit braver with his starting line ups.

Simon Murray's an interesting one.  Consistently scores goals in the Championship then struggles to make too much of an impact in the Premiership.  It could be that he hasn't had the right team but could just as likely be that he's actually not Premiership quality.

He's like the Scottish Patrick Bamford......

Or Declan McManus, just a level higher for the drop off.

Great signing. I've wanted to see Turner at Raith since his Stranraer days when he looked a real talent. As has been mentioned we really couldn't have got a better replacement for Stanton. Pretty ridiculous we've managed to get someone of his talent in January but that'll be the Derek Adams effect and I'm not complaining.

Another excellent piece of business by Murray, Potter et al.

Aye, always been impressed with him going back to then. Always hoped we'd be in for him but whether there was always a better offer or McGlynn inexpiicably didnt fancy him much, he always seemed to end up elsewhere.

  4. Obviously his stand out feature in his yime for us was his aggressuon attacking balls in the opposition box.  Clearly a competent defender but don't think he really improved our leaky defence (not that it's entirely or even primarily their fault)

Glad we didnt cave to an 18 month deal. With Matthews back fit there is less pressure for Brown to play in midfield, When Watson comes back you have him, Murray, Brown and Corr with Dick available to cover.

If we sign another CB then grand, if not then fine. The way we play, it's not where we are gonna fall apart.

Read that O’Reilly never trained with the squad yesterday.

More than Raith apparently looking to sign him which is understandable. Amazing that a short loan has made him go from being without a team with his previous in div 1 to multiple interested at a higher level.

Post Pars match you’d have thought he’d be a stick on for signing an extension so I wonder if it’s Murray who maybe thinks he car get better. Who know but every day that passes whilst we have issues at the back if feels less chance of it happening.

Aye, but Murray also needs to weigh up the chances of Watson coming back in, and then having a spare body on the bench using up funds if he wants or needs to spend that elsewhere.

I think a proven double cup winning SPL manager who’s still young would be a great appointment. With Paton they’ve got the firepower to be causing us issues on Saturday.

It was only their daft double sub at Hampden that meant we walked away with 3 points and not zero.

Or indeed, our daft red card that got us into trouble in the first place.

    Load of absolute pish tbh.

Since the playoffs were introduced (I couldn't be arse checking further) the league one champions have finished 5th or higher every season bar one. The exception being last year with Cove, however Queens Park kept that league 1 tradition going of finishing in the top five.

Being the second worst league one champions over the past decade and finishing 6th/7th or 8th wouldn't be a success. Especially when you consider a good few of those teams would've had a fraction of the resources available.

The way you're talking makes it sound like we were in League one for years and just scraped up, rather than dropping down for a season and pissing the league.

With how cylindrical football tends to be at this level I've never been convinced by this consolidation pish either tbh. With how long contracts are, and the money going around you'll get 1/2 years max of a player doing well at this level before they're plucked off by a premiership side/go down south. It's pretty difficult to build up a squad over a period years, you really need to hit while the irons hot so to say. And with us, and looking at our contracts our best chance with this squad will be next year, if our investors are serious about selling players then next summer (Providing we've had a good season but haven't been promoted) will be the optimal time to sell our assets, leaving us with another rebuild. With that in mind it'd be pretty helpful to finish 4th this year with all the financial benefits that brings

    Think I've spotted Dunfermline's issue.

I don't think McPake changed anything. He played his usual 3-4-1-2 and it was Murray who changed formation and it was the 5 man midfield, which we had only played in the last 10-15 minutes of chasing games.

Clearly 4-4-2 isn't working that well as we wouldn't be having to chase games nor conceding 25 goals in the process.

The one game we played a 5 man in midfield we won 3-0, bossed the game, won by more than 1 goal and a clean sheet.

I know that wouldn't be the case in every game but we would definitely be a lot tighter and probably concede a lot less goals.

McPake changed his shape about 20 mins into the game, trying to match us through the middle and effectively negating the advantage he had up the wings. We may have won anyway, but suspect the tactical shift helped us.

We don't have anyone who can effectively play as wing backs without leaving big spaces if we play the likes of Mullin or Connolly there, or not supporting the attack well if we play pur actual full backs in there, neither of whom have the pace or the instinct to get to the byeline.

The balance in midfield is critical and ive commented myself on how the 4-1-3-2 leaves huge spaces for teams to attack. It's kinda worked because the combination of Byrne with Stanton playing an almost double role as a 6/10.

We went back to a 4-2-3-1 against Dunfermline and we looked generally more solid (despite losing yet another goal where Brown apparently switched off and went awol, Byrne and Murray thre a couple of lazy challenges in and Dabrowski couldnt dive tp his right!) But we also werent nearly as fluid in attack as not sure Vaughan has the pace to play as a 10 and needs to be played as a striker.

I suspect the answer is in being a bit more proactive in terms of game management to change shape and personnel, rather than playing massively open the whole game.

I'm sure I did say about a 5 man midfield as well.

I still don't understand how people don't see this? Every game we've won when chasing or pushing has been 3-5-2. Dunfermline 3-0 game 5 in midfield an totally bossed it and kept a clean sheet. Only game really that we've won by a clear margin and kept a cleansheet.

Aye, but within the context of those games, we've played 3 at the back when we've been chasing games and other sides have been content to sit in and ride it out.

For the cup game, McPake changed formation, negating the joy Dunfermline were getting down the sides. He fucked it.

Not saying it wouldnt work but suspect it's a different prospect starting that formation at 0-0 for 90 minutes than doing it in a harem scarem fashion for 10 minutes chasing a game.

Defence Defence Defence. f**k the silky winger. The weakness is that fucking defence. Jesus fucking Christ

Nah, it's the midfield. The 4-1-3-2 leaves big channels for teams to build on once they beat the press. We lose goals from guys being able to run at the back 4, or have ebough time go make big switches to isolate our full backs.

To date Murray has been happy to gamble on scoring eough goals to cover the issues caused by having one guy covering the back 4, and to some extent having Stanton who can cover those gaps without the ball, and Brown available to step out with the ball has made it work.

At 2-0 up today, hell, even at 2-1 we could have moved to a 4-2-3-1 killed the tempo and restricted the space Arbroath had in front of our back 4.

We will probably be laughed at for letting a goalkeeper score, but that really just masks our problem - terrible game management. In successive matches points have been dropped when we've had the lead in favourable circumstances (10 men, opponents with no subs and a goalie outfield) and we haven't taken the win. It's inexcusable, really.

The 4-1-3-2 needs to go, I think.

Aye, it's fine in establishing a high tempo and getting us on the front foot, but it leavrs big spaces for teams to build on. At 2-0, even going 4-2-3-1 would have restricted the space in front of the defence and still leave us decent attacking intent.

    Really frustrating.

    Slightly nervous about this game.
That said if we’re genuinely going to challenge for the title then you win this.

We’re now as far as I’m concerned the only team that can stop United skooshing the league at a canter.

Aye, fairly nervous as well, keep expecting us to turn into a pumpkin at midnight...

  13. From a Rovers point of view that felt like a game where all our worst habits aligned into one performance. The formation that falls apart when the press is beaten, the defenders who back off, and off. The keeper with the mistake in him.

It's a miracle we didnt lose last night, and probably should have, despite three very well worked goals.

Plenty for Murray to mull over.

  14. That was grim. We got away with one, massively. Notwistanding Dabrowski's error, the major issue is that the 4-1-3-2 doesnt work without Stanton and the whole of the 2nd half, Ayr were able to nullify our extra man with about 2 passes.

We didnt use the extra man at all. Went through the middle to a player that wasnt there, didnt use the width at all and let Ayr run at us constantly.

If we had gone 4-2-3-1 from the 2nd half, we might have built on that. As it was we were lucky to get out of that by the skin of our teeth.
